to think I might be pregnant despite not having sex since my last period?

I am going mad aren't I?

I have not had sex since before me last (heavy, 4 day long) period. That period was totally normal. It arrived bang on time and was exactly the same as all my periods. I seriously doubt it was implantation bleeding given how heavy it was and how long it lasted.

Before that period I had only had unprotected sex once, early in my cycle (so eight weeks ago) when my Persona said it was safe.

For the last few weeks I have had a very specific kind of nausea. The kind I have only experienced when pregnant. I have thrown up after drinking alcohol (this has only previously happened when pregnant). My boobs hurt. I am tired. I have constant mild period pains (another symptom of early pregnancy for me). I have not even thought of testing because that would be madness wouldn't it????

How could I possibly be pregnant when I have not missed a period, have not had sex this cycle (so would have to be eight weeks pregnant already) and the sex I had was eight weeks ago at a non-fertile part of my cycle?

Should I test or would that be a sign of paranoia?

Ha, ha Kitty! Maybe you are right, except I have not been drinking much due to the aforementioned nausea. Also hangovers don't tend to give me sore boobs and period pains.

You could've ovulated early before your last period, conceived twins & sadly lost one v early (hence bleeding)?? Unlikely but not impossible

Xenoophilius · 20/12/2011 12:39

Hate to break this to you but I had a completely normal (heavy) period after conceiving in both my pregnancies. My first pregnancy I had two periods but the second was much lighter. So it IS possible, although if you are confident of when you ovulated you should be fine. And I don't think loosing a twin that early would produce that much blood, if any. Please don't beat yourself up about it x

DoesNotGiveAFig · 20/12/2011 12:41

Stupid question. How is speculating on the internet going to help?!

DeWe · 20/12/2011 12:43

I find since having dc I tend to get nausea in the couple of days before my period is due. I get ms in pregnancy before I can test (about 10 dpo) so I've had one or two nervous waits before I've got used to it.

OldGreyWassailTest · 20/12/2011 12:44

My sister had periods normally. She was 4 months pregnant before she realised! Just do the test and put yourself our of your misery!

Statistically, not likely your preg as in a cycle when you are trying the odds are still low. However, I think most people know someone who fell pg and didn't realise, I know someone who was 5 months gone and on the pill who went to the GP about wind or something who found out then! Test and tell us the result..

ladderinmyxmasstocking · 20/12/2011 12:55

Do a test.

My gynaecologist told me she'd heard of someone conceiving 5 months after last having sex. Presumably in very, very rare cases, sperm can survive longer than a few days or the woman was lying to cover up an affair.

In any case, do a test and find out for sure. Simple.

MrsOzz · 20/12/2011 13:02

5 months!??? Surely that can't be right. Was she called (the Virgin) Mary?

Or maybe she was actually slipped rohypnol (sp?) around the predicted time of conception...

OP, you will drive your mind potty with worry. Try and relax, plan to take a test when you get home, and just look forward to Christmas :-)

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 20/12/2011 13:18

Currently pg with DC3 after having an unprotected bonk 4 days before my period was meant to be due (have very regular 29 day cycles). So I am in the camp of anything is possible!!

TroublesomeEx · 20/12/2011 13:33

Are you any closer to deciding whether or not you're pregnant yet? Xmas Hmm

GlueSticksEverywhere · 20/12/2011 13:33

ladderinmyxmasstocking That can not be right!

HeidiKat · 20/12/2011 13:43

5 months Hmm. I think she will be appearing on Jeremy Kyle soon for DNA tests.

RainyAfternoon · 20/12/2011 13:51

I had an odd virus a couple of months ago that basically felt exactly like I was pregnant. Morning sickness type nausea, sore boobs etc. Had me so convinced I did two tests even though it would have been a bit impossible... Eventually morphed into more normal virus achey type feelings. Took ages to go as well.

Moominsarescary · 20/12/2011 13:54

I was just thinking the same, with my last two pregnancies I had what I thought were periods the first month, so could just be paranoid. I've thrown up my evening coffee two days running which has only happened when I've been pregnant

aquashiv · 20/12/2011 13:59

As a mother of twins I know many that have bleeding after conception so I would say it could be twins or triplets.
Do the test.

coraltoes · 20/12/2011 14:18

I have looked into your uterus and know the answer. I won't tell you though...as your DH isn't there. If anyone else wants to know pls let me know. I can whisper it.

ladderinmyxmasstocking · 20/12/2011 14:45

I know, I don't believe it either.

But it was my gynaecologist who told me. Not a tabloid newspaper, not an urban myth Confused.

DeckTheHugeWithBoughsOfManatee · 20/12/2011 14:53

Did you POAS yet?

VeryLittleGravyOnMeXmasDinner · 20/12/2011 15:55

ladder

It was 5 weeks not 5 months...

pdf abstract here

MrsOzz · 20/12/2011 16:06

I'd probably the suggest the gynaecologist went back to med school for a re-cap!

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 20/12/2011 16:08

Well you've got two choices. You can not test and sit there fretting about the possibility. Or you can test and fret about the certainty or be relieved. I don't see what good not testing would be to you. Not like you're not going to think about it till then, is it?

BerthaTheBogBurglar · 20/12/2011 16:40

If you are pregnant then you didn't have unprotected sex 3 weeks before your period. You don't know when your period would have been as you never had it - you got pg and then had non-period-bleed 3 weeks later.

Pregnancy bleeding can feel just like a period - cramps, the lot. I've had 2 pregnancies where I bled heavily, just like a period (results are 9yo and 4yo now).

OTOH, there are other things that can make you feel pregnant, when you're not. Nausea, period pains, tiredness etc can all be caused by other things. Like a wierd random hormonal imbalance, or a virus.

Go test, you're going to obsess whatever happens ...

GlueSticksEverywhere · 20/12/2011 17:14

ladderinmyxmasstocking I know, I don't believe it either. But it was my gynaecologist who told me. Not a tabloid newspaper, not an urban myth.

The most likely explanation is that
a) the patient lied to her gynaecologist "no I haven't had sex honest!"
b) she wasn't really a gynaecologist but an escaped patient from the adjoining mental health hospital

It is not possible.
