AIBU to be offended that everyone who sees me after a recent (large) weight loss asks me about loose skin

Over the past 7 months I have lost 7 1/2 stone. Huge weight loss, so people who haven't seen me for a long time are, understandably, very shocked. However, the majority of them (men and women) very quickly ask me whether I have loose skin.

I haven't seen my father since early August so when he saw me he was really shocked, pleased, but also shocked. One of his first questions he asked was about loose skin.

AIBU to find this attitude by others offensive? I am much healthier and look years and years younger, and if I do say so myself, prettier. Yes I have loose skin on my tummy, but in the grand scheme of things, this is small fry.

What is it that makes people want to know about the downsides of such a huge positive improvement in my health?!

That's comforting to know, Talking.

I think it's genes and stuff too, WRT to the skin. My belly is stretchmarked to hell, and wibbly. I lost the weight reasonably slowly, too - started dieting last January and lost my weight in about 9 months. It's only my belly though, no baggy saggy arms or legs. It's actually quite odd looking IMO as I have a bony arse, you can see my ribs and hip bones, but then there's this big old saggy bit in the middle!

I've stopped losing now, and don't want to limit calories any more (I go between 1200 - 1500 depending on how many Quality Street are in my house.) Hoping that with time the skin will stretch down, but after being obese and having 3 largish babies, I'm not holding out much hope!

People can be jealous of someone else's success and want to take the shine off it with a negative comment so I'm afraid that's one reason for these intrusive comments Xmas Angry. Not everybody obviously and sometimes even those with such unworthy feelings don't even recognise it themselves.

we should have a bariatric support thread - and no meanies allowed :D

QOD
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/big_slim_whatever_weight_loss_club
find a nice quiet forum and go for it as only those who have had it can truly advise
I have no idea if my friend from the pool has and I'd never ask
its just so nice to watch a very pretty lady emerge from her cocoon

trixymalixy · 23/12/2011 16:30

Wow well done!!

It is rude of people to ask, but I think they are just intrigued as would I be. I would never be so rude as to ask though!!

I have also wondered about the question trois asked so thank you for answering.

FreyaoftheNorth · 23/12/2011 16:33

How very rude of them to ask. Amazed that people would, unless perhaps they had had the loose skin problem themselves.

QOD · 23/12/2011 17:30

thank you talkin but have been there before and its not been bariatric friendly if you know wot I mean!
people judge and don't believe in surgery and do the whole daily mail "the money should be used to pay for cancer treatment". but thank you x

Talk - I'm slightly intrigued about the appearance of "pretty" after weight loss. IME people are either pretty or attractive or not (or somewhere on the spectrum). I do believe slimmer is better but don't believe its any prettier. In fact as you get older often plumper is prettier as you don't tend to wrinkle so much, of course its much less healthy and healthy wins over pretty everytime in my book.

boglach · 23/12/2011 17:45

Jealousy pingu i am sure of it

well done enjoy christmas, and i hope you feel great!

TalkinPeace2 · 23/12/2011 17:47

Kew
she is a very pretty lady who was pretty despite being morbidly obese - no neck, huge bulge wrinkles behind her arms, rolls on her ankles
but now that the excess weight is coming off and we can see her bone structure and true shape - she is actually very petite - she is turning heads as she walks through the bar

we have skinny women at the gym and the ribs above the fake boobs look is just horrible
but I do not believe that most obese people would not look better if they could see at least an outline of a collar bone as they turn their heads

QOD - you'll be fine. Be proud of your acheivement.
