I have an appointment on weds for my coloposcopy. (sp?)

I'm scared of what they'll find.
I'm scared of it hurting.
I'm scared of the after effects.
I'm scared I won't be around for my family
I'm scared I'm going to spoil Christmas.

I can't tell anyone my fears and frankly I'm shitting it.

I can understand why, I think I would be too. Virtual hand holding coming your way.

banana87 · 19/12/2011 21:51

Try not to worry. Why are you having it? I've had a few and they do not hurt at all, so don't worry about that bit.

MangoMonster · 19/12/2011 21:51

Try not to think about it toouxh, might be ok. Good luck with it. Don't feel bad about being scared. Wish I could say something that would help...

SaggyHairyArse · 19/12/2011 21:52

Have you told anyone about your symptoms or your concerns at all?

I am so sorry you are going through this, it is extremely stressful (I had a breast cancer scare and I was terrified).

I'll be keeping everything crossed for you on Wednesday x

Kayano · 19/12/2011 21:52

I have a phobia of needles and medical procedures and honestly the best thing you can do is talk about it, to a GP - who can refer to things like psychologist or hypnotherapist to try and relax and cal
You, chat to those around you and let them know exactly what scares you, and if that fails talk to us.

I often get anxiety and panic attacks and sometimes you just honestly need a good sob and a cuddle

They honestly do not hurt. It's impossible! The lining of the colon doesn't have the correct 'nerve wiring' to feel any sort of cut/scrape pain I promise you .

wannabestressfree · 19/12/2011 21:55

if you mean colonoscopy don't be...............
i have crohns and have several a year..........
its 'shit' :} but it will be ok...........
it doesn't hurt, its more uncomfortable and you are sedated. They look for abnormalities, polopys, etc and may take some samples.
I doubt the results will be with you before early new year.

You can chat to me, I spend quarter of the year in hospital with arse/ bowel/ stomach related trauma's

hug

lisad123 · 19/12/2011 21:55

Hope it goes ok. There is a massive bowel thread on general health, your welcome to join us x

LynetteScavo · 19/12/2011 21:57

Just as LunaticFringe says.

Really, it will be fine. It doesn't hurt (they give you a local anasthetic). I don't remember any after effects at all.

probablyveryunreasonable · 19/12/2011 21:57

If its a colposcopy after abnormal smear then i've had 2 and it's fine. I had abnormal cells burnt off 15 years ago, then a couple of years ago had another but all was fine. It really is very routine

gentle hugs and pats

Sounds very worrying for you. I am sure you will bottle it and cope but it really is OK to have a wibble, you are only human.

lisad123 · 19/12/2011 22:00

Well if it's a cervix one, you will be fine, it's never as bad as you think it will.

theoldheaveho · 19/12/2011 22:00

Is it a colonoscopy or a colposcopy? Because although they're right next to each other, they are verrry different x

LoveInASnowyClimate · 19/12/2011 22:01

Assuming you mean colposcopy, then don't be scared, I have had loads and they are fine. Doesn't hurt a bit. I was scared the first time but it really is totally ok. And on the off chance that you go where I go, the ceiling is painted like a forest which is very pleasingly distracting Smile. I don't know if this is the case everywhere, but at my hospital, you have a nurse up by your head who chats to you and distracts you while the doctor does the actual fiddling. I was once so relaxed that I laughed at something the nurse said and shot the speculum out at the doctor Blush. It really is fine - less unpleasant than a smear.

Waiting for the results is a bit nerve racking but the chances are that it all will be completely fine, and much, much better to know if anything does need to be kept an eye on or needs treatment.

PM me if you like.

Un MN hugs for you.

theoldheaveho · 19/12/2011 22:03

And I've had a colposcopy and biopsy which was a tiny bit uncomfortable but mainly because I was sooo tense. I had to have cells removed but had it done under general anaesthetic as I am a big wimp.
Make sure you tell them you're nervous - I did and they couldn't have been nicer.

BlatherskitesInFairyLights · 19/12/2011 22:03

If you mean Colposcopy, I had one 7 years ago after an abnormal smear and it was fine. It didn't hurt at the time and was no worse than period pains afterwards.

My smears have been annual but normal ever since.

Good luck with it whatever it is

dearprudence · 19/12/2011 22:04

I had a colposcopy and biopsy earlier this year, after a borderline smear that 'couldn't rule out risk of high grade abnormality'. They found nothing and it was very simple and quick.

I was nervous beforehand, so understand how you feel. We'll support you, but I hope you also tell your GP or the nurses at the hospital that you're so scared, as they will be able to help you.

verytellytubby · 19/12/2011 22:05

Good luck.

LoveInASnowyClimate · 19/12/2011 22:08

Oh, and there aren't really any after effects, so don't worry about that. I think I had a few cramps and a few drops of blood once or twice but much better than AF.

LoveInASnowyClimate · 19/12/2011 22:11

Oh, and if you hate stirrups, you don't have to use them - I sometimes used to just flop my knees apart with my feet together and it didn't seem to present a problem.

theoldheaveho · 19/12/2011 22:13

Can I just add that with a colposcopy, if they do need to do any treatment they may ask you if you'd like them to do it there and then, while they're up there IYSWIM Grin. But you can say no if you want. My first colposcopy was the day before my 30th birthday and I had loads of plans for the day, so I refused treatment at the time and waited for the result of the biopsy. It did drag it out a bit, but if you're concerned about Christmas etc just wanted to let you know. Any abnormalities normally take years to turn into anything sinister so waiting for a month or so isnt going to be detrimental Smile

Hope youre ok - feel free to ask any other questions.

Shenanagins · 19/12/2011 22:13

I've had both done (on the basis we don't know which procedure it is at the mo) and neither procedure is anything to worry about. For the one after an abnormal smear, they took a biopsy sample and burned some abnormal cells. For the next day or so I felt as though I was having bad period cramps but it didn't stop me doing anything. For the other, they knocked me out (don't know why as didn't ask to be) so felt nothing!

DressingGownSnowQueen · 19/12/2011 22:14

Its easy to say try not to worry but I have been there and know it is scary.

With me they had a wee look and said there wasn't much going on, went back in 6 months and everything was normal. Now I just need to get a smear every 6 months to make sure.

Mine was slightly painful but only because I have a botched episiotomy scar which makes it a bit hard for them to get the speculum in. It was no worse than a smear test though. If you are worried ask for a small speculum. For me they had to use a long thin one Xmas Blush I obviously have a very long vag!
