I have an appointment on weds for my coloposcopy. (sp?)

I'm scared of what they'll find.
I'm scared of it hurting.
I'm scared of the after effects.
I'm scared I won't be around for my family
I'm scared I'm going to spoil Christmas.

I can't tell anyone my fears and frankly I'm shitting it.

I had a colposcopy.. after them finding 'pre cancerous cells'.. they insert a video camera which you can see on a screen.. they apply some liquid which will turn the abnormal cells white - they will then use a little cutter to remove a tiny amount..

I didn't find that bit painful.. just the position & stirrups etc.

The bit I found really really painful was the subsequent burning of the cells.. despite the anaesthetic I found it really really painful... they then applied some 'silver' stuff to stem the bleeding (which didn't work).

Sorry.. that probably didn't help did it?

I understand how worrying it is, your mind thinks the worst, but caught early, its a minor thing to have done. Mine was 15 years ago.. I had 2 years of treatments before being given the all clear - smears every year for a further 5 years, and now just back to normal.. although I always worry when its time to go for one..

Try not to worry.. its being dealt with.. good luck!! x

Hopefully if you have this on Wednesday there'll be some reassurance before Christmas. Better to get it out of the way ?

soniaweir · 19/12/2011 22:19

I had one today and it was fine! I've been going for nearly 20 yrs. today I had a biopsy and it did not hurt at all. There was a screen which I watched. It showed what she was doing. It was v distracting but to be honest it was not sore at all.

I have the hpv virus which my body can't get rid of. They are v positive though and in my experience once you are in the system they keep a very close eye on you.

Good luck and please don't be scared. Just think of it like a smear which is essentially what it is except they use a microscope.

Please don't let it ruin your Christmas. Easier said than done but don't worry about things until you have too.

Take care

When I said "bottle it" I meant I am sure you will "bottle it up" meaning surpress your worries come the day and be a brave girl, not "bottle it" and run screaming!

I wanted to apologise for not coming back to you. Having written the post I had a mini meltdown, I think writing it down made it seem more real IYKWIM.

Poor DH thought I was taking it all in my stride until he had the full sobbing, snotty episode.

It's a colposcopy rather than the colon one - sorry for my spelling. V confusing.

Your posts are very reassuring. Going to have a good read of them now. Has anyone had it done at uch?

My mum had one years ago, all good, no problems found.

ShengdanRoad · 20/12/2011 23:07

I had my follow-up colposcopy yesterday after an abnormal smear and a colposcopy a year ago. It was absolutely fine and not painful, both times. The colposcope doesn't actually touch anything inside you. They put a speculum in which doesn't hurt, then point a bright light inside you just to look at your cervix. It's not as intrusive as it sounds, and if your nurse/doctor is anything like mine, they will be gentle and supportive.

Thinking of you!

ShengdanRoad · 20/12/2011 23:08

P.S. I meant to say that they didn't find anything wrong when I had mine done. You won't necessarily have to have any further treatment.

perplexedpirate · 20/12/2011 23:45

A friend of mine had this done. She said it was a bit uncomfortable but thats cos she has a tilted cervix and they had to wriggle around a bit.
Everything was fine, no treatment required.
To our joy she told us all about it in the pub that night.

Try not to worry, this time tomorrow it will be all done.

MrsBradleyCooper · 21/12/2011 21:16

How did you get on op? X

Mercapto · 21/12/2011 22:10

I too had a Colposcopy earlier this year and I was scared. Probably because of their leaflet i got with the letter then I preceded to Google about it.....never a good idea.

So i had pre-cancerous cells, went for Colposcopy, they then decided to burn away cells and take a biopsy which came back fine. I have had a smear test since and it came back fine. It's just all a bit unfortunate you have to wait weeks and months to get the good news!

You might not need any procedure (not that the procedure i had was a horrific experience or anything) just the Colposcopy perhaps.

It's fear of the unknown. You will be fine OP. It's fantastic we get this preventative treatment. It really is!

LoveInASnowyClimate · 21/12/2011 22:13

Hope it went ok, OP?
