To think this is a crap substitution

RottieAroundTheXmasTree · 19/12/2011 15:56

Have just had an ASDA delivery of all my christmas food, minus the fresh bits that I will pick up closer to the day.

As part of the order I ordered 2 trays of frozen 'pigs in blankets'

They have sent me:

2 packs of frozen sausages and 2 packs of bacon.

Now I can see the idea behind this, make your own, even though they are the wrong type of saugages BUT

The bacon has a use by date of the 21st!!

It is surely clear to whoever is packing the shopping that the 'pigs in blankets' are likely to be part of a christmas day meal and so the substitutions are crap.

They also missed off the sage and onion stuffing mix and the mint sauce, no substitutions in the whole store apparantly.

AIBU to think this is really crappy.

Did they not tell you those were the substitutions when they dropped the stuff off? Sainsburys always go through what random item they've tried to pass off as the thing you ordered with you, so you can say "you're having a laugh, mate" and send the stuff away.

These threads always remind me of the MNer who ordered woodland eggs and was sent a wooden owl :o.

Kladdkaka · 19/12/2011 16:03

They substituted my mum's frozen pigs in blankets with vegetarian spring rolls. They'll go nice with the turkey and tatties. Xmas Grin

Groovee · 19/12/2011 16:04

My friends substitution for 24 bottles of beer were a 24 pack of crisps. She couldn't stop laughing but her dh was not amused. A quick phonecall and it was sorted and a free box of beer was delivered the next day.

MabelLucyAttwell · 19/12/2011 16:06

Is cutting up the sausages and wrapping bacon round them beyond your capability? And bacon use by 21 December is perfectly all right for another 2 weeks after that as long as you keep it in the refrigerator. If you don't use it all, freeze it.

Your sausages and bacon are probably priced higher than the pigs in blankets so you have a bargain.

RottieAroundTheXmasTree · 19/12/2011 16:08

They told me there were substitutions yes and I saw they were for sausages and bacon but thought never mind I'll make my own pigs in blankets.

The use by date and the type of sausages wasn't on the delivery note, I didn't find that out until the driver had left.

If they had sent cocktail sausages and bacon that will last until christmas day I wouldn't have minded as i'd have simply made my own.

OP posts:
Shutupanddrive · 19/12/2011 16:09

Why can't you just wrap the bacon around the sausages and then freeze them until needed? Xmas Confused

Sirzy · 19/12/2011 16:09

Making your own pigs in blankets surely isn't that tough? Stick the bacon in the freezer until Christmas eve and it will be fine.

Otherwise you could always go to the shop yourself ;)

AFuckingFestiveKnackeredWoman · 19/12/2011 16:10

Pigs in blankets are meant to be bite size not proper sausage size. Ring them, and say about them and the date and see if they will take them off your bill.

Shutupanddrive · 19/12/2011 16:10

What type of sausages are they? Just seen part where you said they were 'wrong type'

Sirzy · 19/12/2011 16:10

Cocktail sausages for pigs in blankets? Wtf?

RottieAroundTheXmasTree · 19/12/2011 16:11

mabel It's a USE BY date not a sell by date and being pregnant I am pretty strict on these so wouldn't use it past the date, especially not 4 days past.

I would feel awful if I poisoned guests also!

Plus they have sent me the cheapest, fattiest, gristle full sausgaes they could find, wouldn't dream of serving them up to guests on xmas day.

I didn't know you could freeze bacon however, does it taste ok once defrosted?

OP posts:
SantaAteAllTheBiscuits · 19/12/2011 16:12

bacon freezes just fine and you can just run the packet under water and they defrost very quickly. I buy the cheap ass family bags and keep them in my freezer to us when cooking.

how on earth can there be a 'wrong sort of sauage for pigs in blankets? Confused

SydneyLa · 19/12/2011 16:12

Didn't someone on here was get sent a twix instead of tampons? That one had me giggling for days

Callisto · 19/12/2011 16:13

Bacon lasts for ages, ignore the sell by date. As long as it isn't green and slimy with a slight tang of corruption (much like a banker - ha ha) it is fine to eat.

You could take the sausage out of the skin and wrap the bacon around little balls of sausagemeat - or are the sausages Cumberland?

RottieAroundTheXmasTree · 19/12/2011 16:13

sirzy That's what I had always assumed they were?

They are not full sausage size anyway and I have always bought them ready made so may be wrong here.

Not fussed enough to phone them but having a moan all the same, and can't go out and get some as stuck in the house due to SPD so having to rely on deliveries :(

OP posts:
Sirzy · 19/12/2011 16:14

Chipolata sausages are normally used which are just smaller versions of normal sausage. Any sausage can be used though

ouryve · 19/12/2011 16:16

I just buy normal length chipolatas and twist them in half to make my own pigs in blankets (I also buy them and do it early in December, because I've been caught out by streaky bacon shortages in the past!)

I can understand the annoyance if the sausages were thick ones, though and most frozen sausages tend to be pretty blech, anyhow.

RottieAroundTheXmasTree · 19/12/2011 16:17

I've been charged the price for the pigs in blankets on the reciept, that can't be right surely??

I bought 2 packs of ready made extra special pigs in blankets and got 2 packs of frozen smartprice sausages and Asda's own bacon.

OP posts:
LadyClariceCannockMonty · 19/12/2011 16:17

All you Nigella types counselling 'Just whip up your own'. Maybe the OP would really rather have readymade ones? (I would). I wouldn't accept crappy sausages either, or bacon that was so close to its use-by date. That's quite insulting. OP, just ring them up and see what they can offer, and if they're not very helpful or apologetic just point out how many other supermarkets you could shop with.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 19/12/2011 16:17

Asda always seemed to pick stuff that had a really short date on, even eggs and they should have a good few weeks on. I rang and complained (nicely!) and they said to put a note in the delivery instructions for long dates, so I did and I've not had a problem since.
I also agree you need cocktail sausages btw!

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 19/12/2011 16:18

x-post with OP. That IS outrageous that they've charged you for the original item. I'm sure they're a different price. Complain complain complain!

RottieAroundTheXmasTree · 19/12/2011 16:19

Totals up to £3.60 for the items they have sent.

They charged me £6 for the items actually ordered Hmm

OP posts:
whenPaschagotstuckupthechimney · 19/12/2011 16:20

You could always make a pig nativity with them instead.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 19/12/2011 16:20

IIRC correctly, Asda will only charge you the original price if it's cheaper than your subs. If the subs are cheaper they'll charge you the real price, so you shouldn't lose out.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 19/12/2011 16:20

Cross postOP, definitely complain!
