and want to scream even more everytime someone refers to my daughters as princesses, as though that's a normal epithet for 'girl' or 'daughter'?

Argh.

i quite often call dd 'princess', amongst other nicknames, but i'm from essex so it's probably to be expected. though neither of us wear pink velour tracksuits.

IneedAChristmasNickname · 19/12/2011 20:13

My Dad has always called me his little princess, or baby girl. I call my sons little man, I like it, don't care if others don't!
My friends DD is actually called Princess though, which I don't like! But it's her DD, her choice.

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 19/12/2011 20:20

It makes me fairly nauseous. Much like poppet makes me feel violent.

RomanChristingle · 19/12/2011 20:26

DD gets poppet too.
Try 'wee hairy beastie' or 'little dumpling' which were the 2 I got. I'd take 'princess' over them any day.

Teaandchristmascakeplease · 19/12/2011 20:40

I've never really heard "princess" being used. Perhaps I live in a bubble Wink

My mum called me poppet and my dad called me blondypops, when I was growing up.

My own DD was called "my little munchkin" for a long long time. She's now 4.5 and I seem to now be reverting to sweetheart, lovey etc.

Perhaps I need to name change after that confession though Grin

INeedAChristmasNickname - why do you call him "little man"? It makes you sound dim, and makes your son sound like an adult midget.

HenriettaFarthingay · 20/12/2011 08:24

Agree about 'little man' sounding like an adult midget. Boys aren't little men, they're boys! 'Little man' for wee boys is a revolting term, imo.

Don't like Princess as a nn, but can just about bear it compared to 'doll'. Detest that with a passion. Also, as someone said, hate to hear babies and children referred to as 'sexy'.

Sudaname · 20/12/2011 08:43

My Glaswegian uncle used to call me 'Doll' or 'Hen' but l think its a regional thing and they seem to use both very regularly there. l dont like either but somehow it didnt sound so bad when it was just part of their language. Its like in Ireland - in many parts of the south at least - they call a group of children/young people 'lads' whether its boys or girls or a mixture. As in 'Right lads - who wants to watch a dvd' or whatever. Again it would probably be quite offputting here and make people go Confused but there it just seemed normal because you heard it all the time.

HintofBream · 20/12/2011 08:56

Princess = chav speak.

upsylazy · 20/12/2011 09:09

I really don't understand the aversion to "little man". I used to call my DS's this quite often until I discovered via MN that it's virtually a crime.

My DD is the biggest tomboy going and, when she got invited to a "princess party" (she never usually gets invited to girls' parties) all the other guests were a sea of pink frills and tiaras and DD was sat in the middle wearing a Bolton Wanderers football strip and a pair of grotty trainers.

DS2 is referred to as "The King" in our house as nobody dares to disobey him.

LadyMaryCrawley · 21/12/2011 12:02

YANBU

Princess = spoiled little girl

Katiepoes · 21/12/2011 12:14

I call mine Princess Cheekyface, and when we've had a particularly imprerssive nappy she's Princess Poo for a while. I don't care who hears i7, she's 18 months old and it makes her laugh.
