and want to scream even more everytime someone refers to my daughters as princesses, as though that's a normal epithet for 'girl' or 'daughter'?

Argh.

Is it a south of England thing?

ColdTurkeyRemains · 18/12/2011 23:31

One of the parents at the school where I listen to the DC read always puts stuff like "weel done, princess", "another confident read, daddy's little princees" in the reading record.

Hmm
WorraLiberty · 18/12/2011 23:31

It's meant as a compliment is it not...a term of endearment?

Are you anti Royal? Is that it? Grin

bulletpoint · 18/12/2011 23:32

I know a call, whose name is actually "princess" Wink , she's a lovely girl though.

Lorna99 · 18/12/2011 23:34

Is Dirty Den a family friend?

MillyR · 18/12/2011 23:36

Is this an anti-arrogance thing, an anti-royal thing or an anti-disney princess thing?

We have referred to DS as King of all the Maths, sung to the tune of A Starry Night, as in:

'And all the angels sang for him, the bells of heaven rang for him
for a boy was born, king of all the maths.'

RomanChristingle · 18/12/2011 23:40

I call dd princess so yaboooooooooooo!

I also call her sweetie, my lovely, sweetypie, sausage and a variety of other things that may make people want to sick up their dinner but she likes it so I don't give a shit!

GoingForGoalWeight · 18/12/2011 23:42

Yuk! But i do not have a DD. Possibly be guilty of saying it if i do.

Oops sometimes i call my son my handsome little Prince (he is SN) Xmas Blush

(confusing)

WidowWadman · 18/12/2011 23:43

I've no problem with people whose children actually are princesses calling them that. But I guess they're probably least likely to.

And it's mostly anti-Disney-princess sentiment which fuels my rage.

I'm a grown adult and still get called princess Xmas Grin

I would draw the line at calling ds "prince" though, it reminds me of pam from Gavin and Stacey.

Yabu because I love being a "princess" Xmas Wink

SebastionTheCrab · 18/12/2011 23:44

I sometimes do this. Then want to slap myself! Xmas Grin

WorraLiberty · 18/12/2011 23:45

I'm 42 and lots of people I know call me 'Princess' or 'Flower'....it's a Cockney culture thing around here.

I've never even given it a second thought.

befuzzled · 18/12/2011 23:46

YANBU. Only thing worse is "little man" for a boy

bulletpoint · 18/12/2011 23:47

I think its alright when the child is very young, maybe up to age 5 but after that, hearing a man Especially calling his 11 yr old daughter "princess" just sounds creepy.

By that age mums have begun to realise their dd is no princess at all Wink

redpanda13 · 18/12/2011 23:51

I only call DD 'my little princess' when I am very, very pissed off. If fact I hiss it like Vincent Price. The line is 'what is it my little princess?'. It stops me saying the terrible, terrible words I really want to say. It chills everyone to the bone apart from DD who still creates merry hell.

redpanda13 · 18/12/2011 23:51

in fact not if fact Blush

squeakytoy · 18/12/2011 23:53

Its definately a london thing at the very least. I hear it all the time to women of all ages down here. Its as normal as calling someone "love" or "chicken" if you are up north. Not insulting, or abusive, or derogatory... just harmless chat.

jasper · 18/12/2011 23:55

or in Scotland "the wee man" Boak!

thepeoplesprincess · 18/12/2011 23:57

I keep getting called princess by people on here. I'm affronted.

Feminine · 18/12/2011 23:57

I say it to my DD...we call her Princess Pea!

I am originally from London, maybe thats why? Grin

I want OP to explain why it it really annoys her please

Feminine · 18/12/2011 23:59

Oh just saw, its the Disney thing again...Xmas Hmm

Bogeyface · 19/12/2011 00:01

Well I am 38 and I still call my father "Daddy" and he still calls me "Princess", and I like it so there!

manicinsomniac · 19/12/2011 00:02

I'm sure people were referring to their daughters as 'princess' years before disney princesses were even invented

Rudolfsgottarednose · 19/12/2011 00:21

One of mine and my DD's favourite films is "The little princess" (the one where the girl ends up having to work as a servent because they think her fathers dead). I like the sentiment behind it, "every girls as special as a princess".

OP-If you had grown up with verbal abuse and listened daily to how some parents spoke to their children, this certainly wouldn't get on your nerves. Step out of your own ivory tower into the real world, were you will come to apprieciate how much terms of affection, mean to some children, who never hear them.

FoxyRoxy · 19/12/2011 00:26

I'm a Londoner as well, maybe that's why.

Wtf is a Disney Princess?
