Just been listening to Stewart Lee's mostly quite good programme about Morris dancing. He's got lots on the culture and the history and the importance of it, and how it's fun to do, and all that - but all the way through it's about men doing it. And no acknowledgement whatsoever that there is a vibrant and thriving tradition of women doing it too. The one women's team mentioned are the Belles, who are great and I have no problem with their alternative take on Morris, but I do have a problem with the way the programme presents them as the only women's team and their formation as a hugely radical thing.

And yes IABU to expect most of you to give a flying fuck. Except that it is a really blatant example of how women are ignored.

I see we are also not allowed to talk about feminism anywhere except on the feminist board are we?

And why why why do people always have to reverse it and pick on some tiny aspect where men may be discriminated: lifting heavy objects, synchronised swimming, female only gyms. Can't people see that in the grand scheme of things women are far more disadvantaged than men. And being asked to lift heavy objects, or not being allowed in a female only gym is nothing compared to the fact that one in 4 women will be subjected to some sort of sexual attack.

Yes Morris dancing may not matter to most people but for women the tiny things are a symptom of much bigger problem. For men, they are just tiny things.

Whatmeworry · 18/12/2011 10:37

How many women support women's sport? Actually go and watch it? That's what seems to call the shots with Sky, if there's a big interest in it, it gets the coverage.

That's the nub of it....women don't by and large watch sport, so TV stations by and large don't cater to them.

LeQueen for some people it's not just about how it affects them, it's about the bigger picture, which is why they get upset.

OK so I had had a couple of drinks last night, but it does actually matter that women are so sidelined.

Squeakytoy, what you think of her shoe plugging is irrelevant. Adlington has won a major global title this year, Murray hasn't.

squeakytoy · 18/12/2011 10:44

Oh you are, but it gets very tedious when every "feminist" thread has to turn into a thread about sexual assault..

"And being asked to lift heavy objects, or not being allowed in a female only gym is nothing compared to the fact that one in 4 women will be subjected to some sort of sexual attack."

No, it doesnt compare to the fact, and it has nothing to do with bloody morris dancing either...

squeakytoy · 18/12/2011 10:46

Squeakytoy, what you think of her shoe plugging is irrelevant. Adlington has won a major global title this year, Murray hasn't.

You are missing my point.

Adlington herself gleefully mentions designer shoes at almost every opportunity, and has become well known for it, more well known for it than the swimming titles that she has achieved.

TheLightPassenger · 18/12/2011 10:47

I am not particularly bothered by Morris I must admit, but it is a massive interest of SGB, I believe, so of course she would feel cross at feeling marginalised. Why not protest about a small, esoteric issue as well as the big, global issues affecting women?

Hardgoing · 18/12/2011 10:49

SGB, don't cry, did you see the programme a few months ago on clogging, in which they created a 'flashmob' of cloggers (on BBCThree), twas brilliant and most of the 'experts' on clogging were women.

Hardgoing · 18/12/2011 10:50

I think the point she was making is that this programme was indicitative rather than a major issue. And shouting, 'but it's not as much of an issue as rape' isn't always a helpful response and tends to shut down discussion of anything feminist except rape, which is a real shame.

valiumredhead · 18/12/2011 10:56

Gwen I bet you would've seen my mate there Grin

SinicalSanta · 18/12/2011 11:02

it's the drip drip effect, innit.

if we lived in a perfect world with equality for all, a minor Morris related blip would be - well, like female only gyms, a blip not terribly important to people not involved.

It's not the exception though.

It seems strange to me to see minor exception after minor exception in every area of life and not come to the conclusion that actually, the exceptions are the rule

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 18/12/2011 11:06

It would have been helpful to know that SGB has a particular interest in Morris dancing in the OP because it changes the flavour somewhat.

Whatmeworry · 18/12/2011 11:06

I see we are also not allowed to talk about feminism anywhere except on the feminist board are we?

It would be nice if MN Feminists could talk about anything without assuming it's always an abusive male rapist problem, that gets very tedious.

WorraLiberty · 18/12/2011 11:06

I genuinely burst out laughing when I read the thread title and clicked the thread, totally thinking it was a wind up Xmas Grin

But when done for putting the words 'feminist rage' in the actual title...this will ring a little bell over on the feminism board and have them all rushing over to get equally as angry and tearful.

Of course you could have posted this on the feminism board, but then everyone would agree with you and there'd be no bun fight would there? Xmas Wink

DillyTinsel · 18/12/2011 11:07

I accept your points about bringing rape into it, but my point is really, as I said, these are symptoms of bigger issues. But the points raised regarding men aren't really part of a bigger picture.

Hardgoing · 18/12/2011 11:14

SGB, this may or may not cheer you up (I love the bit when the lone female clogger starts clogging in the middle of all the shoppers)

SinicalSanta · 18/12/2011 11:15

oh look who's here, feminism's biggest cheerleaders!
it's like crack cocaine to some of you, you hate what it does but you keep coming back for more Grin

Bunbaker · 18/12/2011 11:17

"Adlington herself gleefully mentions designer shoes at almost every opportunity, and has become well known for it, more well known for it than the swimming titles that she has achieved"

I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that nasty comments have been made about how butch she looks, so she wants to "feminise" herself a bit more.

Bunbaker · 18/12/2011 11:18

Although I wasn't aware that she advertises shoes. I only know of her for her sporting achievements.

WorraLiberty · 18/12/2011 11:18

Or she could be a money grabber...who knows?

squeakytoy · 18/12/2011 11:20

She doesnt look butch, she just has an exceptionally large nose...

I suspect it is more to do with knowing that giving someone a name check on tv usually results in a few freebies... as it did for her, quite a few times.
