to censor pop music?

I have just seen the thread on 12 rated games, and it started me wondring if I am the only mother who checks all lyrics of pop music in hte charts., about half the songs my DC want, I say no to, due to content about rape, S&M, drugs, etc.
DS wanted "Now thats what I call music 80" for christams, but the staff serving in HMV says they are banned from playing it over the PA system because ofthe content, and when I checked with the guy servin i nthe CD section of the local supermarket, he also said he wouldn't sell it to a child.
It's got 43 songs on it, fo I need to research and check the lyrics of every single one to find out what the specific problem is? or do other MNers know anything about it?
I would like to here your opinios

Films and music are two very different things, more so nowadays than ever before.

I wouldnt want to watch that film. I have heard the synopsis and even that sounds vile.

Images are a lot more difficult to deal with than words.

So certain censorship is ok? But you're not allowed to prevent your 10 year old from listening to music which advocates rape/violence/crime/drug taking? Double standards, I would say.

When DD was 2 she used to sing 'I like you so much better when you're naked' Blush

I've had to censor some if the music I listen to when in the car with them(they are 5 and 6 now) so no swearing etc.

It is the story line that is sick in the human centipeed. There is no gore, nudity or sex in it. It is just a badly made film with a sick story line which sets out to shock.

My 14 year old would most likely go "Ew gross" and switch the tv over to match of the day. If he did end up watching it i wouldn;t be that bothered as i dont think it is going to make him what to go out and sew 3 people together.

Can you separate out the music from the lyrics do you think Sulky?

I love Radiohead, but I can't work out WTF he's singing about half the time Grin

Not everyone takes the lyrics to heart and hangs on every word, sometimes it's just about the sounds maaan

(not that I'm saying songs about rape/violence etc are ok for children to be listening to)

Funnily enough, my dd hasn't sewn anyone together either. All I was trying to say was it wouldn't have happened in my house as I keep an eye on these things and there is no difference between monitoring what they watch/listen to (and play on the computer, I suppose).

My example was Lily Allen and her songs are very easy to make out. I actually don't know why I am so involved in this discussion, as I don't give that much a toss - my kids are 3 and 14, so it's not that relevant to me right now. I think the OP is not BU!! although I might be

I try to censor stuff to a certain extent, well with my 11 yr old anyway...not so much swearing, she knows about swearing and she knows not to repeat it, but I don't like having to have conversations with her about S&M and why Rihanna's excited by whips and chains or why it's not ok for her to sing about niggers just because Nicki Minaj says it.

I'd rather have the conversation after she's heard the full version somewhere else though, than just let her listen to anything and for her not to ask why I don't like it.
