Wanted to get some for my DD this year, as i think she's old enough now.

It's been years since I played with lego, and have never actually bought any, so when I looked at the prices - OMGoodness!!!!!

Another Lego fan hereGrin
I combined all of mine with all of DHs, now the DCs have thousands of pounds worth of Lego. We have a lunch box just for Lego people!
I have found Hoover incidents are reduced by getting a builders tray for DCs to sit in as they build. Confiscating rogue Lego outside the tray helps DCs understand the rule (and means you get to play with the best pieces)
Most of my Lego is from car boot sales, although if anyone was looking for gift ideas for DS Lego was my gift of choiceGrin.
There's a free Lego app with building instructions.

FlightRisk Thank you! I have already got that for DH so he can do the building with DS!

inmysparetime What is a builder's tray?

CamperFan · 18/12/2011 15:35

You can get bags of used Lego on eBay - might be cheaper. Tesco and amazon are good for getting the sets cheaper, especially Tesco at the moment. I know because DS1 is addicted to the stuff. And while it is pricey, it is brilliant and will last for a very long time.

A builder's tray is a plastic tray about 3ft diameter, roughly octagonal, with a lip round the edge about 2in high and a hole to hang it up. You can get them at eg homebase/ B&Q.

PurplePidjInAPearTree · 18/12/2011 16:04

Chandon - I got the smaller version of that for 4yo DN, was £12 or so in Argos Grin

inmysparetime · 18/12/2011 16:12

They're £10.50 on Amazon

troisgarcons · 18/12/2011 16:22

You can get lego, quite cheaply on eBay. It's 2nd hand of course, but provided you aren't precious about 2nd hand stuff, no problem. Just bung it all in a bucket of milton when you get it.

Even played with but complete sets are availble on eBay. I think it roughly goes at 310- a kilo - and thats an awful lot of lego.

I was tempted to flog the buckets an buckets of ours - but in reality - It's done my brother, me, merged sets of DHs and all the lego our children were ever given - I daresay it will do the grand children too. It's one of those things you buy one and it lasts forever.

RueDeWakening · 18/12/2011 18:00

We've got Lego from the 60s through 2000s and it's all great. Mostly inherited from my uncle and NI cousin, plus an old ice cream container full of mine.

I put it all in a pillowcase and bunged it in the washing machine to clean it Grin it went through the dryer too, with no problems except the noise...

RueDeWakening · 18/12/2011 18:01

Ignore the NI, no idea how it got there Blush

MissBetsyTrotwood · 18/12/2011 18:02

It is expensive but it lasts FOREVER. The DSs are now playing with DH's Lego from 1981. Rad.

hairypotter · 18/12/2011 18:18

I have got dd2 lego hogwarts castle. At £102 bloody quid, it had better be amazing Xmas Grin

AbbyAbsinthe · 18/12/2011 18:22

We bought a 4kg box from someone advertising by a card in Sainsburys... it was TWENTY QUID!! Grin

AbbyAbsinthe · 18/12/2011 18:23

When we went to pick it up, the bloke was lovely but the wife was a bit snippy - I think she realised by the speed we went to pick it up that they had woefully undersold it - it would have got much more on eBay Grin

SantaAteAllTheBiscuits · 18/12/2011 18:45

My kids have my box of lego from the 1980's..... it does last for ages!

PepeLePew · 18/12/2011 19:13

ds plays with all my brother's Lego from 30 years ago. I bought him a Star Wars model he wants from eBay for Christmas and yes, I did check
all the bits were there. Lego is great - we could do with some
more basic bits so will check out eBay post Christmas.

Tw1nkle · 18/12/2011 22:28

I'll be hitting the car boots in the spring!!!! And I'll check Ebay post Christmas - it still seems really expensive on there at the moment!!!
