Wanted to get some for my DD this year, as i think she's old enough now.

It's been years since I played with lego, and have never actually bought any, so when I looked at the prices - OMGoodness!!!!!

DS is suspected of having ASD too but dyspraxia too so we have to help him with the Lego. He hasn't got the imagination to build without the instructions but it seems v good for improving eye hand coordination. He has the Lego Police station that we haven't started and he has the train set (OMG how expensive Xmas Shock but that will be fantastic!

Bananaman Blok Squad fell apart for us :(

Marne · 18/12/2011 10:45

You can get it at good prices if you shop around, Amazon, John Lewis and WHSmiths often have offers, we used our tesco club card vouchers when they had 'double your points' to get dd1 the ninjago temple set and i got her a few sets on Amazon when prices were lower. Its deffently worth the money though as will last for ever and hold its price if you want to sell it on e-bay when the dc's have had enough of it.

thisisyesterday · 18/12/2011 10:46

DS1 has ASD too! there's a bit of a theme here lol

however, he prefers just bags of bits rather than the kits thankfully. His favourite thing in the lego shop is the pick n mix section where he can just fill a big pot with loads of random pieces.

any kits he is given get built by me or DP, then taken apart by him and made into something else

PurplePidjInAPearTree · 18/12/2011 10:52

4yo DNephew has become addicted to Lego from playing with mine when he comes to visit (comes for several days at a time in the school holidays, his big sis has ASD so it's a sort of respite/pay him lots of attention thing)

I am very proud to have bought him his very first very own Lego brick box Grin

I'm probably looking forward to him unwrapping it more than he is!

bananamam · 18/12/2011 10:52

Damnit re blok squad....we we only spent £40 on three sets so not too bad...will see how it goes. He does have an awesome toy story Lego set to make up for it!

OnTheBen10DaysofChristmas · 18/12/2011 10:55

I love the Toy Story Lego. Is it the RC car?

OnTheBen10DaysofChristmas · 18/12/2011 10:56

Definitely a theme Thisis! It obviously appeals to the obsessive collecting thing.......Grin

bananamam · 18/12/2011 11:02

Woodys round-up Grin

bananamam · 18/12/2011 11:03

Though I can see him liking all this alien stuff....

HurtleTurtle30 · 18/12/2011 13:09

Bananamam, we have the blok squad fire station and it's great, doesn't fall apart. The best non Lego type I've bought. The instructions are slightly more difficult than Lego so have your patience hat on but othe than that it's great

Answeringwhyquestionssince2002 · 18/12/2011 13:19

We have used Lego as an alternative to a sticker chart in the past. We bought DS a kit, and he 'earned' a piece at a time for good behaviour, we totted up how many he had earned each day and he added them to the model at bedtime so it took a while to assemble it. Worked very well!

bananamam · 18/12/2011 13:25

Phew thanks hurtle!! That's what we have him!!

camdancer · 18/12/2011 13:26

Answering I love that idea. DS is completely uninterested in stickers so sticker charts don't work but Lego would be genius.

FlightRisk · 18/12/2011 13:29

It does last forever. My ds had his first lot handed down to him from my step brothers you have to shop around for it but prices don't vary that much.

Just think you could keep it all hand it on to your grand children.

MissPricklePants · 18/12/2011 13:31

my dd is at the duplo stage, its pricey but when we visit my parents she plays with my old duplo which is over 20 years old!my mum has kept lego as well and it seems to last forever!

belgo · 18/12/2011 13:32

Look out in Sainsbury's for half price Lego. I would get a starter box to begin with.

MissPricklePants · 18/12/2011 13:32

flightrisk thats what my parents have done!

lljkk · 18/12/2011 13:37

yanbu. Especially if you have a DC who likes to collect & display specific theme sets (sigh). I think I probably should itemise DS's Lego Star Wars collection separately on our house insurance.

ime, DC were not ready for it before about age 7-7.5yo, though. Stick with Duplo until then.

FlightRisk · 18/12/2011 13:46

OnTheBen10DaysofChristmas

I have bought DS "lego ideas" book this year. He has sets but also likes to make his own things. The book is really good (I've already had a peak) full of different things and new ideas. I bought it through school book club but it is available on amazon. It might help to give you DC ideas of what to build. Xmas Smile

maypole1 · 18/12/2011 14:38

We but it seconded hand on eBay clean it put it in a fancy box and he dose not know the difference

Lego can be incorporated into any other toy and it last for ever my sons now 11 has been building his collection sonic he was 4 he had a massive box I have seen toys come in a out of favour but Lego is still his number one ask every year

maypole1 · 18/12/2011 14:40

You can a job lot of eBay for around £20

WhiteTrash · 18/12/2011 14:43

We got DS1 a large box of it from Gum Tree for £40.

It is very expensive, according to my parents it always has been. But it is worth it, its brilliant stuff. But if your a bit skint second hand is the way forward. We've got a few hundred quids worth of it for little.

Oakmaiden · 18/12/2011 14:47

The basic lego stuff is much better value than the themed stuff. My daughter is desperate for the Lego Hogwarts Castle this year. £102 - I think not!!!

LadyBeagleBaublesAndBells · 18/12/2011 14:48

I haven't bought any in years as ds is 16 now but we have a humungous box in the attic, some passed down from my older niece and most of the Harry Potter collection that I bought.
Ds loved it and was really good at making the themed ones, which after a couple of months would get deliberately broken up by me accidentally trodden on.
They used to take up so much space.
But then he just used his imagination. It really is almost an investment as it lasts forever.
I heart lego.

Chandon · 18/12/2011 14:49

you need this starter set.

www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&cp=8&gs_id=u&xhr=t&q=lego+box&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1366&bih=667&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=12312034238500153761&sa=X&ei=-fztTrbpHcS_8AOn6YTyCQ&sqi=2&ved=0CIwBEPMCMAM

Then build on from there.

It's the best way to start a lego collection (and cheap job lots of e-bay (AFTER christmas....cheaper ;))
