To take something back to Sainsbos and state it's not fit for purpose?

Bought DS (3 next week) a hat, scarf and glove set from sainsburys size 3-6 years. Promptly unattached and binned packaging. The scarf is fine but the hat is too small and keeps coming off, and the glove fingers are so narrow he can't fit his in! He's not big at all (probably a bit on the smaller side) for his age.
Could I take the set back? Without packaging? And probably without the receipt as I've completely lost that too!
Sorry if this isn't the place to ask but I wasn't sure where was!

no. you chose the wrong size.

Moodykat · 16/12/2011 22:13

But I chose 3-6 years for a boy not quite 3! Thought it'd be too big if anything!

How can it be the wrong size if the OP's child is not yet 3 and the product is marketed for 3-6 year olds? I'd certainly try to return it.

workshy · 16/12/2011 22:15

legally you have no right to take it back however it would be worth going into store, explaining nicely what has happend and asking if it would be possible to exchange (they may well say no but nice customers are often accomodated, nasty, ranty customers who go in miss-quoting the sales of goods act are not)

MustControlMincepieOfDeath · 16/12/2011 22:15

I would, they will probably be fine about it. Good luck.

Geordieminx · 16/12/2011 22:16

No. Your fault. They cant sell then as they are used.

Also if I remember rightly Sainsbo's won't take any clothes back without receipt.

MatLeaveForever · 16/12/2011 22:17

Are you sure it didn't say 3-6 months?

PurplePidjInAPearTree · 16/12/2011 22:17

I've never heard of age 3-6 year old clothing, are you absolutely sure you didn't pick up 3-6 months by accident?

PurplePidjInAPearTree · 16/12/2011 22:18

X post, MatLeave!

thepeoplesprincess · 16/12/2011 22:18

It's certainly worth a try.

MatLeaveForever · 16/12/2011 22:19

Xmas Grin @ purple!

Moodykat · 16/12/2011 22:20

Yes, I am sure! All the smaller sizes in same pattern had mittens!
I know legally I have no leg to stand on really but it's just pissed me off and I wondered if IABU!

OP I have found the same with DS's hat - he is 4 but small for his age and his 3-6 hat is too small - from sainsbury's as well. I assumed I had just been unlucky.

Children;s hats (in sainsbury's anyway) come in 1-2 and 3-6, not sure what comes after that :o

I cant buy childrens hats for dd and ds as they have big heads (dd is 8 and ds is 5) - we got hats from the mens section in matalan for ds as even the teenage sizes of hats would not go on his head! I dont buy hats unless they are there to try them on.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourMincePies · 16/12/2011 22:24

MatLeave I bought DS some gloves from Sainsbury's and they are sized age 3-6 years too. They are in a camouflage pattern but in blue. They are massive, but they do seem to do these odd sizes. DS is only 2 3/4 at the moment but the age 1-3 years seemed too small for him.

redexpat · 16/12/2011 22:25

I thought you did have a right to take something back if it isn't fit for purpose? Perhaps you could post this on which? or a similar forum.

PurplePidjInAPearTree · 16/12/2011 22:32

According to WHO head circumference should be around 50cm at age 3. Measure the hat from side to side, double it, if that measurement is smaller than the global average then go shout at Sainsbo's

If its not fit for purpose, you have a legal right to repair/replace/refund.

I would take it back, with child, and demonstrate. If he was 6 and it didnt fit, fair enough, but he isnt quite 3, its not you buying the wrong size.

The sizing must vary - DD2 7 is wearing Sainsbos 3 - 6 hat and she has no small noggin, trust me!

NoseyNooNoo · 16/12/2011 23:09

My son is just 3yrs. He is wearing a 7-8 yr old hat because the 3yr to 6yr had was too small - I took it back and exchanged but had receipt and packaging. I think you are on tricky ground without packaging or receipt though.

RomanChristingle · 17/12/2011 00:19

I would email their customer services. I couldn't be bothered with the hassle in the store.

Angelswings · 17/12/2011 00:46

Yes , take it back

startail · 17/12/2011 01:13

Please hassle them. Stupidly small sun hats drove me mad. DD2 is exactly average if they don't fit her they are wrong.
M&S and your stupid tights are you listening.

Moodykat · 17/12/2011 21:34

Thanks all for your messages! I will give it a try and report back!

You should be OK to take it back. DH bought a shirt which I unpacked and washed for him and then when he tried it on it was a size smaller than the size on the hanger (he hadn't checked the shirt - doh!). We took it back and got a refund with the receipt which I was struggling to find. They would have done an exchange if I hadn't had the receipt.
