To think a large glass of wine a night (sometimes two) isn't too much?

Clearly by government guidelines it is too much. I usually get through 3 bottles of 11% cava per week. I don't get drunk, don't binge & always feel fine the next day but am worried I'm diung myself harm. I love the buzz I get from a large glass while cooking dinner, aibu?

I thought it was obligatory.

JamieComeHome · 14/12/2011 18:34

Not getting drunk isn't the issue, IMO. Your tolerance will be raised so you don't feel drunk. For me the issues would be a) health and b) dependence - why are you drinking this much? If it's to cheer you up then I'd want to be tackling the reason for that rather than an artificial buzz.

Feminine · 14/12/2011 18:34

How would you feel if you couldn't have it?

Thats what yo need to ask yourself :)

It seems a lot to me ...but I am useless at drinking these days Grin

Feminine · 14/12/2011 18:35

Its a bit like you do suspect its a bit too much perhaps?

diabolo · 14/12/2011 18:37

My DH had some tests recently at the Doctors, and filling out the questionnaire answered "2 glasses of wine per evening" - the resulting form gave his weekly intake as 42 units. It sort of makes you stop and think how easily they add up.

I drink the same, but I appreciate its probably not good for me in the long term.

I don't feel inclined to change it though. Grin

SinicalSanta · 14/12/2011 18:37

I would think now is the time to break the habit.

If it's a treat it's easier to replace with some other 'reward', than if it's a dependency.

GincogniHoHoHo · 14/12/2011 18:40

I think it's too much, but that's easy to say because it's not my poison.

GincogniHoHoHo · 14/12/2011 18:40

(mine being chocolate)

RainbowSheep · 14/12/2011 18:41

How would I feel if I didn't have it? Bored probably, I like the feeling it gives me. I usually have one or two alcohol free nights a week but I just really enjoy how it makes me feel

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 14/12/2011 18:42

A 'large' glass you say?

How big are your glasses?

Sirzy · 14/12/2011 18:44

Finding life boring without it would concern me slightly personally. I think it's very easy to fall into a habit where you need drink

Icelollycraving · 14/12/2011 18:44

It is the law in the land of Icelollycraving to ensure there is always wine in my hand the fridge.

Feminine · 14/12/2011 18:45

So I guess the wine is just away of jazzing up cooking time?

You say you don't get drunk ...but that feeling you are getting is a buzz.

Try with smaller glasses maybe?

thepeoplesprincess · 14/12/2011 18:46

How long have you been drinking at this level for? If you can maintain it and never go beyond a glass or two with dinner, then it's small change really. The trouble with alcohol is that you end up needing more and more and more to get the same buzz.

yellowraincoat · 14/12/2011 18:48

I go through phases of drinking quite a lot too, but I'd never say it's cos I was bored. I think that's what would worry me. Do you find your life in general boring? Maybe you need to do something to make your life a bit more interesting?

RainbowSheep · 14/12/2011 18:48

I have three young children and run my own business from home, it's a little escapism I guess, especially in the Winter months, to get a break I like to shut myself in the kitchen for an hour with a large glass of wine while I cook dinner... mothers little helper?!

OP posts:
JamieComeHome · 14/12/2011 18:48

I think lots of people kid themselves about their intake not doing any harm, because it's wine, and wine is socially acceptable

bananamam · 14/12/2011 18:49

I think it's quite a lot, but then I don't drink often at all. We only buy alcohol if we fancy a drink....once overy couple of months. I have two glasses and get tipsy because I drink infrequently. I think I'd have issues with it if I was "bored" without it though...certainly Would never relate it to being "bored" two separate things IMO. I get bored when I have nothing to do, not when I am not drinking....

It's each too their own in this case, and many others. There are aspects of my life other people would think are to excessive compared to theirs..so on that note...live and let live as long as it harms no others.

RainbowSheep · 14/12/2011 18:51

No deffo not drunk, I don't like feeling drunk, I just like the buzz I get from a large glass of cava or champagne... I never ever drink more than half a bottle, although I do realise it's ove rguidline amounts. I worry I'm an alcoholic but I don't want any alcohol, just a glass or two of fizz, which if I didn't have I would gladly go tee total for the evening

OP posts:
Feminine · 14/12/2011 18:53

I can see why you want to do it Wink

But...I do think that you want clarification that your consumption level is not too much.

what would stop you having 2 large glasses ...or 3 even?

The "mothers little helper" comment makes me think you are becoming a little dependent.:)

RainbowSheep · 14/12/2011 18:55

I may well be dependent, I wouldn't say I was an alcoholic though... Do you think I need help & are ther eplace sthat offer it? If so what would they do? I just enjoy it too much I think

No regular alcohol intake is healthy. People use it as a crutch. Become dependant on it. Whats the need to drink alcohol every day, it shows an addictive behavioural streak if you cannot go without it.

CailinDana · 14/12/2011 18:55

I went through a phase recently of having a glass of wine every night and I found it really sapped my energy and made me quite low. I think it's partly because I wasn't drinking other drinks so I was ending up dehydrated but also I think over time alcohol dampens your mood and makes you more prone to feeling demotivated. Remember too that alcohol is poisonous. Having a glass now and again does a small amount of damage but having it very regularly means that your body has to work quite hard to counteract its effects. It leeches vitamin C from your system making you more prone to illness and a lot of cheaper wine have sulphites in them which are difficult for your body to process and get rid of.

Barbielovesken · 14/12/2011 18:59

IMO, 3 bottles of wine per week is definitely excessive. Just mind yourself

Feminine · 14/12/2011 19:00

I am not positive you need help...

But it sounds like you might be reaching out a bit for some?

I'm not an expert, but you sound a little down?

If you don't want to do away with it, really, just try smaller glasses.

Be honest with yourself though, if deep down you know you are drinking to make yourself happy and too much (on a more serious level) seek help from your GP :)
