I am married with 3 dc's (youngest is 3mths) and have the washing machine on twice a day (plus bedding).

No matter what I do I always seem to have a HUGE ironing pile that never get's smaller so I looked online, found a company and they have just came and collected 50items of our clothing Blush

I told my MIL and she asked what exactly did I need that for and surely her son wouldnt want to 'waste' his money on that! Frstly, I earn money and all money is ours... but aibu to want to spend time with my baby and going to dc's festive concerts etc than trying to tackle the mountain of ironing?

YANBU, but maybe you could leave some stuff unironed too. Baby won't notice in particular.

OhTheConfusion · 13/12/2011 10:39

Im ashamed to say that is with leaving some unironed too Blush and me doing some of it... we couldn't see our bedroom floor!

I send all of my husbands stuff out to get ironed and I'm a SAHM.

Life is too short to stand ironing. FACT

ViviPrudolf · 13/12/2011 10:39

Why on earth would you tell your MiL if that was her reaction?!

Don't feel guilty. Outsourcing is a GREAT idea.

AMumInScotland · 13/12/2011 10:40

YANBU - there's nothing the faintest bit wrong in getting someone else to do pieces of work for you, whether that's ironing, cleaning, gardening, whatever.

And your MIL can go jump in a lake - if she'd said "surely you don't want to spend your money on that" I might have attempted to be polite. But its certainly not your husband's money, or totally up to him what to spend it on.

sue52 · 13/12/2011 10:40

It's nothing to do with your MIL, do what works for your household and makes you happy.

ElizabethDarcy · 13/12/2011 10:41

YANBU - I get in help too, is a huge time saver.

MIL... horrible comment to make... trying to put you in your place like that Hmm

mrsjay · 13/12/2011 10:41

Glad to hear it's not just me then.

MIL seems to think because I am on maternity leave that I live off my husband (that said, even if I did I would have still have done this) and should be doing all housework etc on my own. We choose to have a baby therefore we share costs of maternity leave etc, plus I work for myself so I am still cramming in the occasional meeting (I took the baby Blush) and lots of emails!

DH and I share the housework, school runs etc but DH is rubbish at ironing (and even worse at folding!) so this seems to have been whats piling up (and up and up!).

Im so excited at the prospect of a tidy bedroom... oh I miss my tidy house :(

Cat64. I have a dark and a white load every day except for a Sunday when i do bedding.

Kids have a uniform each day (DS can sometimes last 2 days, DD is a dirt, glue, glitter, paint magnet). DH has a shirt each day + whatever the baby has thrown up on. I have whatever she has thrown up on too plus sleepsuit, vest x 2, outfit, tights and endless bibs.
On mondays we have football kit (who trains outdoors in DEC?!?) Tue two loads of sweaty tennis kits and Thursday two lots of swimming stuff Confused

If she doesn't want her 'sons money being wasted' Angry maybe she could do it for free? Maybe suggest that to her, she'll soon change her opinion!
I detest ironing, we no longer have a dining table, its covered in clothes and poor DP has to come downstairs naked after his shower to find clean clothes! Grin

fuzzypeach1750 · 13/12/2011 11:02

We have a wonderful housekeeper. Without her I don't know what I would do. I have 3 DC and own my own business so am busy but I still had her when I was a SAHM. Grin nothing wrong with having help if it gets you through Grin

OhTheConfusion · 13/12/2011 11:15

Luckily she lives a few counties away I can tuck!

Im just happy im not being unreasonable and now off to hoover newly discovered bedroom carpet!

I have also outsourced my ironing. DH shirts, DS shirts and bedding. I do everything else and it was actually DH suggestion! Grin

Have just started using a new company, lady comes on Monday and brings things back Weds.

halcyondays · 13/12/2011 11:19

I just don't iron anything, nobody seems to have noticed. But if you can afford it then why not, it's none of our mil's business way you and your dh spend your money on?

DeckTheHugeWithBoughsOfManatee · 13/12/2011 11:21

YABU. You are a woman, and have a baby. This means you should be shackled in mindless domestic servitude for eternity.

It is depraved and immoral to pay someone else to do your drudgery wifely duty while you prance around painting your nails and spending your husband's money.

Didn't you know a woman's place is in the wrong? Xmas Hmm

Grin
JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 13/12/2011 11:26

oops, pressed enter too soon... Will report back on new lady tomorrow evening after she returns our clothes.

CailinDana · 13/12/2011 11:33

I wonder what people iron? My MIL is an obsessive ironer (is that a word) and years ago she asked me when I got all my ironing done. When I told her I didn't own an iron she was Shock. Despite being totally anal about creases and whatnot she had never noticed that nothing I had was ironed. I now have an iron to do some shirts that absolutely must be ironed but I don't actually use it as I tend to avoid those shirts

Ironing just seems like a totally pointless job. I could never get myself to waste time doing it.

OhTheConfusion · 13/12/2011 11:38

Ha Deck, in my case it's a DIL's place is in the wrong! lol

Jax I too shall report back, ironing is to be returned tomorrow night.

YANBU

I actually don't mind ironing but I hate cleaning so we have a cleaner in once a week. If you can afford to do it then why not. I am much happier spending time with my children than cleaning.

GoingForGoalWeight · 13/12/2011 11:48

YADNBU - unless you refuse to include my ironing too!

Xmas Envy

Go for it, if you can afford it and life is too short.

Xmas Grin
GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 13/12/2011 11:48

YANBU. If you can afford it, outsourcing is good :)

myBOYSareBONKERS · 13/12/2011 12:14

I have mine and DH sent out and still whenIcanbebothered do the childrens.

I am crap at ironing and I just feel that I would rather work an extra hour in MY job (which I am of course really good at Wink ) so I can pay someone to do their job at a much better standard then I could ever do

Beamur · 13/12/2011 12:16

My Mum does most of mine. I am soooo grateful.
