AIBU to think 40 quid is too much to spend on a Christmas tree

DP was out so me and DD (6mo) went out to buy a Christmas tree today, but I came home empty handed when I discovered anything bigger than 3ft tall was 40quid or more, even for the no drop ones.

Surely this is way too much to spend on a bit of tree that'll be dead in 3 weeks?

YANBU there is another thread somewhere (maybe in chat) and people are paying a lot more than that! Shocking [hshock]

Shutupanddrive · 11/12/2011 19:21

Xmas Shock even!

SpottyTeacakes · 11/12/2011 19:22

Last year we got one for £10, this year the cheapest we could get was £25 and I thought that was a lot! I can' believe how much they have gone up, just like everything else I suppose...

whackamole · 11/12/2011 19:23

Haven't been able to get one for less than £30 for the last 3 years. But that might be that we can only realistically get it from B&Q as we don't have a car to transport it.

InExcelsisDeo · 11/12/2011 19:23

Tis the fault of the Danes, Fred. Or not.

I think its too much ,but then I read a thread on here the other day where people pay £100 for a turkey [hshock]

NinkyNonker · 11/12/2011 19:24

Yanbu. Our friend ended up paying £55 Shock. That was for a 9 ft tree though.

usualsuspect · 11/12/2011 19:24

or Xmas Shock

callow · 11/12/2011 19:27

I go to our local Christmas tree farm. They have a rejects section, where they are half price. As our tree goes in a corner it doesn't matter if it is slightly wonky on one side.

Tanktop · 11/12/2011 19:36

We paid £40 for a 9.5ft xmas tree from a local estate. A bargain considering B&Q were charging the same and more for a 5ft. I think if you look around you can pay less....

MissBetsyTrotwood · 11/12/2011 19:39

callow I love the idea of an Xmas tree rejects section.

DH went out today and spent 35 and brought home the biggest tree he could find. It's been a shit year. I feel we should do our best to send it off. Grin

pigletmania · 11/12/2011 19:42

Our one was £70 12 years ago (fake tree) but it has fibre optics and looks great so its self decorating really Grin

pigletmania · 11/12/2011 19:43

its a 7ft tree too

storytopper · 11/12/2011 19:44

Got a 7ft one for £23.50 from a small local nursery - will let you know how long it lasts.

Our plan for the future is to grow one in a tub and bring it in every year - to an unheated porch.

libelulle · 11/12/2011 19:45

We got a cheap one last year, about a tenner for a 7 foot tree. Asked bloke why it was cheapest in the shop and he said 'cos it's a rubbish tree'. In fact it was perfect - no branches down one side so fit nicely against wall in our tiny house. Told bloke they should be selling them as special 'small house' trees and charging a premium Grin. This year in bigger house have just paid 40 quid for huge and lovely tree. Dont regret a penny of it, it looks gorgeous. Esp as dd has insisted on putting 6 baubles on each branch!

mumto2andnomore · 11/12/2011 19:49

Think 40 quid is normal tbh, we have an fake one for 1st time in years as we are going away for Christmas but i do miss a real tree :(

FuckingWonderwoman · 11/12/2011 19:53

I'm in Paris and a six foot tree here will set you back 95 euros. Xmas ShockXmas Shock

FuckingWonderwoman · 11/12/2011 19:53

Bigger than that and it will set you back 120 euros.

pigletmania · 11/12/2011 19:55

Mine is a fake tree and is still going strong after 12 years, complete with working fibre optics, no messy lights

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 11/12/2011 19:56

I nearly fainted (well, not really) when DH bought a half price fake one 7 years ago for £40. I said with 6 week old DS in the car. Our fake tree looks good as new.

The price of fresh trees is mad!

notcitrus · 11/12/2011 19:57

We spent over £50 on one a few years ago - as on 15 Dec all the 4-5 footers were sold and only luxury/larger ones were left at the garden centre, none at Homebase/florists/enterprising bloke in a vacant lot were left. Was shocked.

This time it was under £30 for a nice one at Homebase as we've learnt to buy while stocks are still available - being in London it would be too much time and petrol to go somewhere where they're cheaper.

I admit it's a luxury but our main Christmas spends are the turkey and the tree - everything else isn't that much more. Plan to make a wreath from its offcuts and some ivy next week.

pigletmania · 11/12/2011 19:58

much more eco friendly imo

Backtobedlam · 11/12/2011 19:58

£40 is about normal, although YANBU to think its too much. I think it's a huge amount to spend, but can't find nice trees cheaper so have paid it the last 3 years. It helped this year that the first tree I chose was £60...£40 seemed like a bargain after that!

storytopper · 11/12/2011 20:00

We had the same fake tree for 25 years and only binned it after last Christmas. Some of the tiny branches were splitting. Kind of regret getting rid it when I saw the price of both real and decent-looking artificial trees Xmas Shock.

bellavita · 11/12/2011 20:01

I like one for outside our front door. I paid £20 but it is only small. The bigger ones are £40 plus.

DH said to me today that the tree is rather small and insignificant and why didn't I get something larger, when I told him of the "larger prices" he was shocked.
