to leave the heating on all night?

extravagant an d unnessesary? Or reasonable to make sure the house is warm for DC in the morning.

What are other parents doing?

O wouldn't do it on a school night, as we are only in for 45 mins between waking up and going out, but on a Sunday, when we are in all morning, and it takes so long to wram up in the morning...?

I certainly wouldn't - our heating bills are bloody terrifying! Jumpers and thick socks we already have....

pinkyp · 10/12/2011 23:58

Mines been on constantly since November so no yanbu

timetosmile · 10/12/2011 23:59

I think it's the most efficient way to keep the house warm?
The mian thing is what the thermostat is set at and whether you need all the rads in all the rooms turned up.

squeakytoy · 10/12/2011 23:59

No need to have it on all night. If you get up at say 8am, have the heating come on at 7am.

AgentZigzag · 11/12/2011 00:00

It is a waste having it on all night just so your DCs don't feel a bit nippy in the morning, get them to run around a bit Grin

Or set the timer to come on an hour before they get up?

Crabapple99 · 11/12/2011 00:04

Yes, good idea, I need to look into getting some sort of timer, (the current one broke years ago,) that would solve the problem

My DS was born May 2010 so last winter was a baby and i was on maternity leave. The winter before we'd both been working full time (me and DP) so only had on in the mornings and evenings couple of hours each then at the weekends. Last year I had the thermostat set at 18 all the time so heating did come on in the night if temp went below that plus i increased temp in day if feeling cold. I was dreading the bills come spring but it didn't actually work out that much more expensive, in fact they didn't even need to put my DD up. I've heard it said that keeping a house at a more constant temp is more economical than keep warming up from freezing

Crabapple99 · 11/12/2011 00:07

thanks morph, don't feel so bad about leeving it on tonight now

You could also try putting more clothes on?

Haziedoll · 11/12/2011 00:11

I was told that it is cheaper to keep it on at night as the boost needed to increase the temperature uses more energy.

We have the temperature set at 20.

When I go to my inlaws the kids don't take their coats off, I prefer to be cosy. Our heating bill is cheaper than theirs but they have bigger house. My mum pays the same in heating as we do and yet she is freezing for half the day because she uses a timer.

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 11/12/2011 01:16

I couldn't sleep in a warm house and our daytime temp is only 18. But everyone is different. (and I live 'up north').

The on all the time idea has been disproved on a few threads quite scientifically.

It actually come down to lots if factors I think. How hot you want your house, how efficient your house is at retaining heat etc.

We use a timer, but override it if we need too. Although I am a SAHM, all the DCs are at school and often I'm out too. So the heating comes on an hour before we get up, and an hour before Dcs due in from school. We are lucky enough to be able to afford whatever heat we want, this way suits us.

If you are happy sleeping in a warm room and can afford the bills then no, YANBU.

emmaj1045 · 11/12/2011 01:20

This morning it was 12 degrees centigrade in our lounge as we cant afford our oil heating. My DD still refused to wear a dressing gown or socks!

VelcroFanjo · 11/12/2011 01:21

I'm a scrooge.. heating off at night, and after the kids go to school till half hour before they get back. I'm bloody freezing but it costs too much too heat a 4 bed house when there is only 1 person in it. When the kids were babies I just put on extra blankets at night. I keep the heat down to about 17 degrees, anyone who moans that it is cold gets told to put on another layer. OH moans whillst wearing short sleeved tops...he gets no symathy from me Xmas Grin

VelcroFanjo · 11/12/2011 01:21

sympathyfgs!!

Bossybritches22 · 11/12/2011 01:26

I've been leaving ours set on 15 & continuous, I've got to the point where I'm so miserable when really cold it's not worth it. It only kicks in if its really frosty. On days when we're all out all day I leave it off once we're dressed.

Our CH system is new this year & last we had electric heaters blasting to keep us warm, so the bills can't be much more surely if its more efficient?

mynewpassion · 11/12/2011 04:43

Wouldn't you want it to leave the heating on, but on lower setting, so that your pipes don't freeze overnight?

HighHeidYin · 11/12/2011 04:46

Ours is on all the time, although we turn it down through the night.

Can't bear being cold.

Witchofthenorth · 11/12/2011 07:21

Mine has been on 24/7 for the past fortnight! Very old 4 bed house with no cavity walls. I only have loft insulation and when heating is off through the night it takes an absolute age to warm up. Plus it's been in the minus here at night for the past while and this house cools down so fast despite the loft insulation :( I cannot stand being cold!

thestringcheesemassacre · 11/12/2011 07:25

I never have it on over night. We all have very good tog duvets etc. I find it too clammy. Heating kicks on at 6am so the house is warm by 7am.

ZonkedOut · 11/12/2011 07:34

If yours is electric and you have a separate day/night rate, it could even be cheaper to have it on all night rather than having to warm up the house from pretty cold on the day rate.

Seona1973 · 11/12/2011 07:41

mine is off between 10pm and 6am and between 10am and 5pm. Seems wasteful to have it on if you are under a cosy duvet anyway. Our boiler has a setting that puts it on if it gets really really cold i.e. it will over-ride the timer. I will boost the heating during the day if I feel cold too.

Shutupanddrive · 11/12/2011 07:42

I would have it on all night if I could afford it! Ours is on a timer to come on at 6am as ds2 is often up not long after that

FredFredGeorge · 11/12/2011 07:44

Are your kids actually cold, or are you projecting your own coldness at them, have they actually complained of the cold?

lubeybaublely · 11/12/2011 07:44

YANBU

It's not that expensive if you leave it on low.

I leave mine on - no thermostat but boiler has about 11 settings. I turn it down 2/3 notches overnight and back up again in the morning (if it needs it, frequently haven't needed it with recent mild weather)
