To think this was rude

I am doing a course and happened to have to be about 15 minutes late one day due to having to take minilaptop to school.
Anyway, apart from being the only one with children in the group, I am also the only overweight one. (This has a bearing).

As I walked in, with apology, the lecturer was in the process of telling the class we would be getting into groups for one of the days of the course and debating as different aspects of the community, givernment and as part of industry.
So as I sat down, he was saying...some of you will be govt organisations, come community groups and soe can represent the chocolate industry. Like laptop, Im sure she will love to represent the chocolate industry. I sat and the back and there was an uncofortable silence. No-one turned around.

I was a bit Shock. Was this rude or am I being oversensitive?

Yes, IMO that was very rude

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 10/12/2011 15:17

Very rude, I would have been extremely pissed off and probably got up and walked out.

MotherPanda · 10/12/2011 15:17

Are you known as a chocoholic - or was it definetley just said because of your weight?

Because Everybody knows I love a bit of cake...

Otherwise - my god how rude! Make a complaint about the lecturer. Very serious for him to say this.

laptopdancer · 10/12/2011 15:18

I am not known as someone who eats chocolate at all. In fact I dont think he has ever seen me eat or heard me talk about food.

jollyoldstnickschick · 10/12/2011 15:18

That was rude.....Id have said 'exactly what do you mean by that?.....I think you could put a complaint in about him.

Nasty fucker.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 10/12/2011 15:19

Disgustingly rude imo - and an abuse of power. She sounds like a deeply unpleasant person, and I'm sure everyone else saw her as such.
Give some teachers people an audience and they love the sound of their own voices so much they forget to edit what comes out of it.

Don't take it personally - she sounds like a twat. I'm rubbish at confrontation, but you'd be within your rights to call her on it.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 10/12/2011 15:21

Sorry him not her.

scarletforya · 10/12/2011 15:23

That's outrageous. Please complain.

thebigkahuna · 10/12/2011 15:24

That's horrible.

I was slightly chubby as a child. In fact, looking back I wasn't even overweight, I just wasn't one of those stick thin children, and had quite a round face.

Anyway, in a music lesson we had to think up silly lyrics for songs, and I said "all you need is lunch" and the teacher said, in front of everyone "in your case, kahuna, that's probably not true".

I would complain about the lecturer. Actually, I would probably ask if I could have a word and ask him directly why he said what he said.

laptopdancer · 10/12/2011 17:01

I was mortified. Glad to hear Im not just being oversensitive.

OP posts:
lazarusinNazareth · 10/12/2011 17:13

Complain. Please. He has absolutely no right to comment on any aspect of yours or anyone else's physical appearance. Not only offensive but massively unprofessional.

MotherPanda · 10/12/2011 17:17

I always worry in cases like this - it was exceptionally rude but it seems that you can take it. What if you were emotionally unstable? Suffering from an Eating disorder - this sort of comment could really send someone downhill. Do complain, it needs to be checked before he causes some real damage.

PattySimcox · 10/12/2011 17:26

I would complain, your lecturer is an arse

TidyDancer · 10/12/2011 17:28

That was extremely rude and I would make an official complaint. That's is an absolutely unacceptable joke to make at your expense.

Angry for you.

TidyDancer · 10/12/2011 17:29

Ignore the stray 'is' please. Blush

FetchezLaVache · 10/12/2011 17:36

I'm so glad nobody laughed, turned round or encouraged the rude fucker in any way. Please complain, that's utterly disgusting. If he has any sense he'll be expecting it and it sounds like everyone else in the class will back you up.

thepeoplesprincess · 10/12/2011 17:42

Horrible :(

Tho luckily it sounds as tho he only embarrassed himself.

PlumpDogPillionaire · 10/12/2011 17:44

Rude and very unprofessional.

Ok , now heres the drip feed Blush

I feel compelled to tell you.......I am actually another lecturer and in the same department as the man.

I have a pgdip in my field and have to "top up" to an MSc so had to sit his 4 day module and do a dissertation. My contract is conditional on me completing this.

I m wondering if that Im staff will change anyone's view on this.

OP posts:
Hassledge · 10/12/2011 17:49

Rude is rude is rude - makes no odds that you're staff. Unless he was trying to make friendly/taking the piss with a colleague banter - but no, actually - was still bloody rude.

jollyoldstnickschick · 10/12/2011 17:53

I think that makes it worse.

PersistentWorrier · 10/12/2011 17:55

nope, he's still a prick

PlumpDogPillionaire · 10/12/2011 17:57

The fact that you're staff doesn't make any difference to his 'rudeness'.
If you were to make a formal complaint about him then it might actually add some weight to it.
