To think that people judge your driving based on what car you drive?

I drive a 10yo Rover 45. For some reason, people assume that I

  1. Will never, ever, ever want to overtake and quite enjoy sitting behind a Tesco lorry at 45 mph

  2. Must be in the outside lane of the dual carriageway because I like the view, therefore undertaking me is OK even when I'm overtaking a whopping artic

  3. Must be quintessentially terrified of any bit of road that has a bend in it, so will slow down to 2 mph on all bends, so overtaking me on a bend is fine?

Should I get myself a speeding ticket just to prove that I'm not a geriatric snail? (I know where the cameras are...) I could tape it to the inside of a rear window.

I had a ten yr old corsa, I was never hootedor overtaken. It's all to do with the driver, not the car.

Unless you're A BMW driver.

Whateveryousaymustberight · 09/12/2011 18:52

Ha ha! Thanks Vivi. Now I know!

PointyLittleDonkeyEars · 09/12/2011 18:53

Aries that was very polite of you, I'd have been doing a lot more than just shouting, all the more for letting their car down.

Manatee name the lights, I'm soooo there! Xmas Grin

LOL @ vivi - you see, I really do like driving. I bought my car because it was what I could afford at the time, but it is not my first Rover and they have all been an absolute pleasure to drive - change down, foot down, time to play. I get really annoyed when the oldsters don't drive them properly, can't they get Micras?

And yes, I have driven the mk2 Micra, it is awful, especially if you are trying not to drive like a typical Micra driver. As a small car, the Yaris is vastly superior.

i judge people with damaged/bashed up cars, careless drivers.i also think why do women have estate cars when they clearly cant park them.if im driving dh car people keep out of my way.

MabliD · 09/12/2011 19:25

I am very often overtaken in my 14 year old Corsa-of-rust, yet when I drive DH's Civic Type R (the older, better model) everybody appears to want to make love to my exhaust pipe. They can hang onto my rear bumper for miles, it's bizarre.

Weirdly, I drive the Corsa like I'm on fire, and the Civic like it may explode if I touch the accelerator. That car terrifies me.

Selegas · 09/12/2011 19:27

If it's possible to be undertaken, maybe you're in the wrong lane?
Just a thought...

FabbyChic · 09/12/2011 19:29

Personally think no. I drive a 900cc engined car, its a T reg. I still drive as fast as I can.

It is not the car it's the driver, unless its a van.

SantaffetaClaus · 09/12/2011 19:32

Def. I drive a Volvo.

Like a lunatic.

Helenagrace · 09/12/2011 19:35

I drive a mum-bus 7 seater. Most men assume I can't park it.

Earlier this year we went to our local big retail park which just happens to be next to a premier league football ground. The team were hosting man united (which escaped my attention as I couldn't possibly care less about football). Car park was packed but DH managed to a space opposite the sports bar which is on the retail park. The space was really tight. He had two or three goes at parking and couldn't do it. He then, in full view of a huge number of football fans standing outside the sports bar, had to get out of the car and let me park it. Cue lots of pointing and calling friends from inside the bar to watch the "she's going to try and park that huge car in that tiny little space" show. I dropped it in the space first time and exited the car to a round of applause.

I used to have a very very quick 1.6 fiesta which just looked like a normal fiesta. I did so love pulling away from traffic lights and watching the boy racers' egos deflating through the rear view mirrors.

I do judge driving by the car. I expect BMW drivers to be idiots and Rover drivers to be old and slow.

I assume that any vehicle with a fluorescent jacket in it or anything with "motorway maintenance" or similar on it will not have indicators.

Any vehicle with a suit jacket having in it will lane change at will at 90mph.

A Porsche driver is a pratt of the highest order.

Helenagrace · 09/12/2011 19:45

Suit jacket hanging

Kveta · 09/12/2011 19:51

I have started to judge recently. Particularly Nissans. I have yet to see one going faster than 50 mph on the M11. And if some twat tries to cut me up/undertake it is ALWAYS an Audi, BMW, or a volvo estate. Without fail.

I drive an astra estate though, so it's pretty anonymous (or would be if it weren't such an unusual colour Xmas Grin) and I am normally treated ok by other road users. Except for the Audi/BMW/Volvo drivers, who are, like I said, twats.

blondie74 · 09/12/2011 20:12

DH is a panel beater - the most common vehicles to come in to have bumps and scrapes repaired are Audis, BMWs and 4x4s and most have reversing sensors. Must be driven by deaf tw*ts Grin

Tinselrella · 09/12/2011 22:04

Blondie, that reminds me of a mother doing the school run recently. When reversing her great big 4x4 she kept going (at quite some speed) and smashed into a car with such force it shunted it into a post behind, causing quite a lot of damage to both the car and the post. When she got out of her car her first comment was that the sensors didn't go off. Hmm My first thought was why didn't she look in the mirrors?? Most especially as it was in the school carpark. Thank God no-one was walking behind her at the time.

My car beeps at me all the bloody time. Drives me nuts Xmas Hmm

Jenstar21 · 09/12/2011 22:22

Ha ha. Reminds me of an ex-colleague of mine. (Who was an all round arse.) He stated no-one could parallel park anything bigger than a ford focus without parking sensors. I used to delight at another colleague calling him to the window to watch me get a big Volvo into a space 6 inches longer than the car. Just as well I was never asked to park in a supermarket carpark. I'm terrible at that. Still, he was a proper dick.

MrsJangleBalls · 09/12/2011 22:41

"Something understated with decent engineering is usually a safe bet."

That's me. VW Passat estate. Turbo engine, big, quick, well built and luxurious inside. Love it. Love driving it.

Have come to rely on the parking sensors now though, feel a bit lost with them in dh's car.

MrsJangleBalls · 09/12/2011 22:42
  • without them
EndoplasmicReticulum · 09/12/2011 22:46

Absolutely. When I drive the Skoda rustbucket everyone assumes I'm 90, it actually does get up to a reasonable speed but it does take a little while. Husband likes overtaking in it just to see people's faces.

PurplePidjInAPearTree · 09/12/2011 23:20

Trixy, I assume you're putting in a nice fat engine Grin no point changing the brakes otherwise. How low have you gone, and what shows you doing this year?

trixymalixy · 09/12/2011 23:30

Hmm, not quite at the engine stage yet, DH keeps coming home from the workshop showing me random pictures of welded metal that I have to squint to decipher which bit of the van they are of!! Sadly the budget won't stretch to anything fat! The disc brakes are because DH wants it to be safer for the kids mainly rather than wanting it to be fast.

The aim is for it to be ready for vainest, but I'll believe it when I see it!!

Gentleness · 10/12/2011 01:23

Yep - I judge all the time. Saves me a lot of grief on the Birmingham ring road. I am pretty nearly always right about which cars cannot keep in their lane on roundabouts. And I assume the worst with BMWs - oh yes. Too often proved right on the M6... I've seen a fair proportion of Astra drivers being idiots recently too, and souped Puntos - need I explain? Definitely less likely to let a 4wd in or one of those ridiculously long bonnetted cars that don't fit in spaces in carparks. I really change character on the road and judge away to my heart's content!

I drive a Skoda estate and people react very differently than they did to my old Clio. Men particularly speed up if I'm overtaking, especially on the motorway. I reckon they feel that being bested by a woman with kids in a Skoda is a comment on their masculinity.
