to think that people will pay £2 for a cake pop?

I'm planning to start a baking/cake business at home, and am thinking of just doing cake pops. DH says that I am barking to think that anybody would pay £2 for a bit of cake on a stick - is he just being a miserable git (always a possibility) or is he on the money on this one? I'm done my sums and I think that to make a go of cake pops I'd have to get about two quid a pop (as it were). All views appreciated ... even if you think that cake pops are boakworthy yummy mummy dross

I depends how elaborate they are. I've seen some quite cute ones made to look like animals. Could be popular with kids?

yellowraincoat · 07/12/2011 13:38

I have no idea what a cake pop is.

DamnBamboo · 07/12/2011 13:38

I would not pay this, I think your DH is right.

GypsyMoth · 07/12/2011 13:38

No I wouldn't pay that. Sorry

MinnieBar · 07/12/2011 13:38

What's a cake pop?

Trifle · 07/12/2011 13:38

Why would you want a cake on a stick?

£2 is far too expensive unless it is a jumbo size cake as opposed to a cup cake.

Crazy.

hermioneweasley · 07/12/2011 13:39

Personally, I wouldn't, but I won't pay £5 for a cup cake either, and plenty of other people do!

PresentsRibbonsAndMerrySantas · 07/12/2011 13:39

£2 does seem a bit steep, but then i am just your normal mum of 4, so it depends who your market is, if its people like me Shock 99p Xmas Grin maybe £1.49 at a push at easter etc

TroublesomeEx · 07/12/2011 13:40

I have absolutely no idea what a cake pop is and I live in a bit of a yummy mummy area!

I wouldn't pay £2 for a bit of cake on a stick. Not when I can make my own for considerably less.

In fact, I never pay for cake because I always make my own and they're much nicer so I'm probably not the best person to comment on ths.

So I'm going to go now!

Scholes34 · 07/12/2011 13:40

I wouldn't pay £2, because I do a lot of baking myself. Your market is those who don't bake and the chances are these poor people will readily part with £2 for a bit of cake on a stick.

EcoLady · 07/12/2011 13:40

Have to say I just don't 'get' it. Can't stand the whole cup cake phenomenon either. I would not buy a decorated cake on a stick, but no doubt there are people who would.

iloveberries · 07/12/2011 13:40

depends where you live, who you want to sell to, how you're selling etc etc.

IMO cake selling businesses are EVERYWHERE and most people can bake pretty good cupcakes themselves. Sorry if that pisses on your party, just being realistic!

Scholes34 · 07/12/2011 13:41

Folkgirl is quite right there.

gothicangel · 07/12/2011 13:41

erh no!! sorry.

im a pastry chef and £2 each is a massive overcharge.

75p each maybe.

DamnBamboo · 07/12/2011 13:41

I too won't buy those elaborate cupcakes you see around.
Way overpriced IMO

MissPricklePants · 07/12/2011 13:41

I personally wouldnt pay that but the local coffee shop charges 2 quid and they are popular. Hth

GypsyMoth · 07/12/2011 13:41

Look on google images...... Maybe 50p!

DamnBamboo · 07/12/2011 13:41

You sure your sums are right?
What margin have you got in there?
What are your overheads?

SaggyHairyArse · 07/12/2011 13:42

The only 'cake' I pay for is biscotti as I can't make that myself, all other cake is over priced. I am with FolkGirl on this one.

Pandemoniaa · 07/12/2011 13:42

I've never knowingly avoided buying cake (nor justifying the cost!) but I really would not pay £2 for a cake pop. Nor, for that matter, would anyone I know and I live in an area which is stuffed with non-businesses making inessential items to sell at silly prices. Or as my friend calls them with nauseating irony "Ickle Wickle Pretty Fings".

So YABU, I'm afraid and I concur with your DH.

£2 for cake on a stick? Nope.

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 07/12/2011 13:43

Your dh is right I'm afraid. I would love to go into baking, but the harsh truth is that there are so many SAHM bakery business startups that noone really has a chance. I think that bubble is about to burst big time. I've even had to cut down my own baking as ingredient costs keep going up :(

MissPricklePants · 07/12/2011 13:43

oh and I hate cupcakes!would rather bake my own cakes and buns.

GrimmaTheNome · 07/12/2011 13:43

Seems a bit steep to me. Its more like the price you'd expect to pay if you were having a cake in a cafe.

Can you describe what yours would be like and how big? They sound like they are aimed at children, in which case should be small and cheaper.
