Not to care that my fabrics have bacteria in them?

Washing powder that disinfects everything seems to be the latest development in hygiene products. Can't see the point.
Are we expecting smallpox blankets from the pilgrims?
Or am I just a dirty mare?

I bleach my kitchen floor everyday, Doesn't everyone do this? Mine gets minging, Also I use cheap value bleach so it works out cheaper than other floor cleaners.

mousysantamouse · 07/12/2011 12:09

I use dettol on dh sport clothes.
they can only be washed cold and are Envy

mousysantamouse · 07/12/2011 12:13

no bleach in my house - vile stuff and uneccessary

MrsSleepy · 07/12/2011 12:14

What do you use to clean the floor?

GrimmaTheNome · 07/12/2011 12:18

These sterilized clothes are going to be crawling with bacteria pretty soon after you've put them on,aren't they?

Sidge · 07/12/2011 12:20

Healthy skin is a pretty good bacterial defense system in itself, so why you'd need to sterilise your clothes I have no idea.

But then I don't use antiviral/antibacterial anything (unless bought inadvertently!) except detergents and hot water and am Ebola and anthrax free so far... Grin

Hopefully · 07/12/2011 12:22

Washing up liquid. Only a dash, in water.

I occasionally try to get anxious about rice, but continue to eat leftovers the next day (or three)

valiumredhead · 07/12/2011 12:33

If you bleach the floor - how do you not get covered with bleach splashes and ruin your clothes?

crazycanuck · 07/12/2011 12:35

MrsSleepy what in the world are you doing in your kitchen that it gets minging to the point of needing bleach every day? Are you butchering meat in there?

Same as Hopefully here, we use a dash of dish soap in hot water and often a spoonful of borax as well.

OneHandFlapping · 07/12/2011 12:40

In a year's time the Daily Mail headline will be "Disinfectant in washing powder Causes Skin Cancer!"

MrsSleepy · 07/12/2011 12:41

No not butchering!! Although have been tempted with the DH!! Our dinner table is in there and the kids drop food and our back garden is via the kitchen so muddy foot prints and spillages etc.
I think I'll start using washing up liquid instead. Only used bleach as the value one is 30p and using a bit each day seemed the cheapest and cleanest option.

Pascha · 07/12/2011 12:51

Surely the thing about reheating rice is that it cooks a bit more and goes all stodgy. I've never died from reheating it and neither has my son, but the texture's a bit crap by then.

Also as soon as you touch your newly laundered towel which is de-bacteria-ised from the antibac detergent, do you not in fact re-bacteria-ise it? Xmas Confused

I haven't bought bleach for years. (well, harpic for the loo, but I mean straight bleach).

valiumredhead · 07/12/2011 13:01

mrs sleepy did you see my post about splashes?

I love a bit of bleach down the loo personally but do my floors with a tiny bit of Fairy liquid or Tesco Direct to Floor cleaner.

AKMD · 07/12/2011 13:04

This thread is making me giggle.

I will try the antibacterial washing powder because DH's shirts are a bit smelly but in general I see no need to sterilse clothes. I do wash towels and bedding at 60 degrees though. Towels because, um, I do, and bedding to kill bed bugs.

AKMD · 07/12/2011 13:05

WRT bleach, I tried using household bleach to customise my jeans once but nothing happened :(

MrsSleepy · 07/12/2011 13:06

Sorry Vallium, Sometimes I do but I usually do the floor just before bed so have my pj's on so not overly bothered about bleach stains.

MrsSleepy · 07/12/2011 13:08

Never in a million years would I have thought to use anti-bac on my clothes though?

valiumredhead · 07/12/2011 13:09

Ah right, I see, it's just I KNOW I would get covered in splashes and I wondered if there was a secret way. I quite fancy doing the floor now and again in a bit of bleachy water as we eat in the kitchen and have door onto the garden but doing it before bed would wake me up too much to sleep!

elfyrespect · 07/12/2011 13:12

I was listening to a program on R4 recently though, and they were saying about how we're not washing hot enough to kill bacterias anymore because of campaign to get us all to wash at lower temps (environment/money saving).
But this is keeping bacterias alive and all to do with the superbugs that are antibiotic resistant.

Something like that anyway.

MrsSleepy · 07/12/2011 13:12

NOTHING stops me from sleeping Grin

Also handy tip: If you tuck your trouser legs in to your socks there is even less chance of splash back

valiumredhead · 07/12/2011 13:17

Yes elfy all this low temp wash is ridiculous.

Mrssleepy Grin

perplexedpirate · 07/12/2011 13:21

I have never once thought of bleaching my kitchen floor. Actually I've just checked it and it does minge a bit.
I have wooden floors so bleach would be a disaster, but I might break out some washing up liquid.
Incidentally, just done a wash and my clothes look clean and smell nice. I'll get dh to sniff me when he gets home to check I'm not niffy (romance is not dead).

OP posts:
perplexedpirate · 07/12/2011 13:22

Ming! Ming! Not minge! Oh dear...

OP posts:
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/12/2011 13:22

MrsSleepy - you would be horrified at my kitchen floor - I can't actually remember the last time I swept or mopped it. Xmas Blush I hate doing it, and as soon as I do do it, it just gets dirty again, and the dog walks through with muddy paws, shedding fur and leaving paw prints as she goes, so it seems like a waste of time. I am a slattern.

valiumredhead · 07/12/2011 13:24

DON'T USE WASHING UP LIQUID ON YOUR WOODEN FLOORS OP! It will make them dull. Use just a damp cloth or proper wood cleaner.
