to be horrified that The Wright Stuff show mocked a child's murder?

Recently the body of a 16 year old boy was found in the Hebrides. He was murdered. First murder there in 40 years. The only thing really said about it on the show was a joke involving Taggart.

I am horrified! This is a child. Murdered :( How is it a joke? Surely an apology is needed? I have complained to Ofcom.

the MW show is being axed ?

there is a God < brightens >

now, how about that Jeremey fucking Clarkson...

molschambers · 07/12/2011 19:20

Matthew Wright is an odious little shit.

His comments were insensitive and hurtful. Not only to Liam Aitchinsons family - and they issued a statement today to that effect - but also to the community as a whole - of which I am part.

It's a sad day when the fact that people are so rarely murdered in our community is a source of ridicule. Even sadder when the brutal end to a young life is treated with such contempt.

And that was a pathetic excuse for an apology.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 07/12/2011 19:21

I am sorry, mols Xmas Sad

HereKittyKitty · 07/12/2011 19:29

What a hideous man he is! Angry

I never watch Jeremy Vile, Loose Women, Matthew Wright etc because they are irritating and sometimes, like on this ocassion, just plain horrible.

BarbaraStanwyck · 07/12/2011 19:41

I saw Reporting Scotland earlier and this was one of the news items. I was appalled at the way MW made fun of the Liam Aitchinson and the community he was from. Who the hell does he think he is?

His 'apology' was disgraceful as well. He shouldn't of bothered because he simply doesn't mean it. Twat.

yellowraincoat · 07/12/2011 20:08

I do think what he said was insensitive, it's not on to joke around the subject of a boy's death. Also a bit sick of people lumping the whole of Scotland together, Taggart was set in Glasgow, obviously.

I'm not really sure about some of the comments here about how badly it affects a small community. I find it a bit patronising. I come from a similar rural community in the north of Scotland, and I'm a bit Hmm that some of you think of us as somehow different to other communities.

Fecklessdizzy · 07/12/2011 20:13

I hate him, he's such a total tosser ...

fergoose · 07/12/2011 20:22

Yellowraincoat - am sorry if comments upset you, I take your point and am sorry if you feel patronised, was never my intention if I have upset you. I think it was the fact that it seemed MW was taking the piss out of a small community which upset me - not that the community is any more special, or worse affected, by this awful crime than any other. I dunno, I don't want to make things any worse than they already are!

I think you are right, regardless of where or what community it is about - it is never on to joke about anybody's death. That alone is bad enough.

Is sometimes very difficult to get your point across writing things down like this I think.

NinkyNonker · 07/12/2011 20:28

Totally shit. If they were 'disinterested' in the story then they shouldn't have run it, but to take the mick just dehumanises and trivialises the brutal death of someone's child.

MW is an arrogant arse, even more so if he can't see that. Grow up? Maybe he needs to take his own advice.

yellowraincoat · 07/12/2011 20:43

Oh, don't worry fergoose I wasn't offended or upset! I just never quite understand what people think of when they talk about small communities and how tight-knit they are. I live in London now and I feel there's more of a community spirit here than in my home town.

Anyway, I think we're all agreed that it's awful to joke around the murder of a young boy.

molschambers · 07/12/2011 20:44

I agree with Yellow. While we are often described as a "small, close-knit community" and the crime rate is generally low it really is not any different to anywhere else, and I have lived on mainland Scotland as well. The population of the Isle of Lewis is approx 18500 and the Outer Hebrides as a whole is about 26500. We don't all know each other.

I do sometimes feel that there is a perception that there are 20 of us and a flock of sheep living in a blackhouse....

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 07/12/2011 20:47

Goodness, but I loathe him.

fergoose · 07/12/2011 20:51

Yes Yellowraincoat and Mols I see your point - I lived in Harris so kind of knew lots of people nearby, so my perception is different again. But just because people live nearby or in a sparsely populated place it doesn't mean they are all best mates does it. Anyway, I digress.

molschambers · 07/12/2011 20:56

Aye well Harris is a different kettle of fish entirely......Wink

fergoose · 07/12/2011 20:58

:)

LadyBeagleBaublesAndBells · 07/12/2011 21:13

I also watch The Wright Stuff, I'm not a huge fan of him but I like the programme as he does get some good guests. And as an alternative to Jeremy Kyle it is probably one of the better morning programmes.
But I also live in a small community, in the NW highlands, and though I don't get easily offended, this went too far.
Mathew Wright is far too London centric, it's no longer a programme for the rest of the country, and I wish he had had the grace to apologise properly.
The murders of the Kinsella boy or the trial of Steven Lawrence would never ever be joked about, but a young boy in Lewis seems to be an easy target.
It's very sad.

JamieComeHome · 07/12/2011 21:17

That was highly insensitive. The fact that it was a child makes it worse.

Yes, the apology makes me more angry than the initial jokes.

OP posts:
yellowraincoat · 07/12/2011 21:24

That's a good point LadyBeagle. There is a feeling that it's fair game to make jokes about Scotland (and Wales too, probably other places as well) as if it's just some sort of fairy land where no one actually lives.

NinkyNonker · 07/12/2011 21:27

I agree. A genuine apology might have mitigated it slightly by merely demonstrating a lack if awareness and misjudgement, but to know what hurt /offence he has caused and not care is just amazing.

However, I doubt his viewing figures are such that there will be many people out there baying for his blood...similarly chances are the family won't have been watching as not a huge number of people do!

Ninky, his family have seen it. His dad posted a comment about it, and they have issued a statement with through the police.

duckdodgers · 07/12/2011 21:38

Saying what an arse MW is is all well and good, but it saddens me that the audience actually LAUGHED. There is no way on earth he would have joked about the murder of an English teenager as ladybeagle has said but just because this poor boy was Scottish it was the green light to mock his death - and yes Nancy - by turning his death into a cheap laugh on TV faking a stupid Scots accent and linking it to a fictional detective programme without a shadow of a doubt he was mocking Liams death!!!

NinkyNonker · 07/12/2011 21:39

Sad I'm rather hormonal and sensitive at the moment I admit, but this makes me really sad.
