I LOVE Gareth Malone and love choirs and I think it's great how he has put it all together but I don't like the song at all.
I feel unreasonable as I am being made to feel ( by constant press/ radio coverage) that I should love it.
I don't even like it.
Anyone else or just me?

I just watched the video for the first time. Lovely idea and they sing it beautifully but I've got to agree, the song does nothing for me. I did go "aww" when I saw the letter from a little boy though.

I will quite possibly buy it to support the cause, and I'd be happy for it to get to No.1 for Christmas. Maybe it'll grow on me :)

forceslover · 06/12/2011 20:04

Esta you don't have to buy it and you don't have to listen to it.

My hubby is in the sandpit at the moment and he is my Prince of peace, he is helping to bring peace in the job he does. I am VVVVVVVVV proud of him!

Thingumy · 06/12/2011 20:04

Not cynical -it just sounds utterly awful (and my dh is ex forces).

I'm having to switch off my local news programme as they are signing on each night this week.

Dire.

miSaltireandwine · 06/12/2011 20:05

I like it, ...but I do prefer them singing that song "to make you feel my love". I think it's a far better song. just my opinion.

We can't all have the same taste in music, and even if it being pushed every day on radio and tv, so what, turn it off Xmas Grin. It's far better to have the money going to 2 charities which are seriously in need of funding that is usually being directed, towards help for heores instead. H4H has made millions and it's good to see other military charities getting some income.

BUT I would have liked Royal British legion Scotland to be have been included in the fundraising as it , like it's counterpart RBL, do fab work for service fmailies and veterans.

I am totally with you OP - and I've really tried to like it cos I love The Ginger One.

Esta3GG · 06/12/2011 20:07

Protest? Confused
No if you can't beat 'em join 'em says I.
Next year I am going to put out a single featuring ikkle kittens licking the faces of sad children.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 06/12/2011 20:10

mmm. i think you're on a bit of a wind-up, esta.

GingerWrath · 06/12/2011 20:10

miSaltire I didn't realise Scotland had a separate RBL! Surely one to cover all of Britain would be better?

forceslover · 06/12/2011 20:11

Esta - purrfect ;)

Esta3GG · 06/12/2011 20:11

Not at all Aitch - I am just bored and frustrated by cheap sentimentalism.

Herb, they do and their poppy is a different shape and has no leaf.

Ifancyashandy · 06/12/2011 20:17

What Esta said.

And I heard them on This Morning today. Baaaaaaaaaaad singing.

miSaltireandwine · 06/12/2011 20:18

Gingerwrath yes they do, and also the Poppy Appeal is different too, in Scotland it's poppy Scotland who run it. They were both started at the same time by earl haig (legions that is)

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 06/12/2011 20:21

so is none of the money going to scottish regiments?

miSaltireandwine · 06/12/2011 20:21

Poppy Scotland saves £15,000 a year by not putting leaves on poppies!

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 06/12/2011 20:22

i don't think it's cheap sentimentalism, btw. for the people singing, this is life and death stuff and that song is an article of faith.

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 06/12/2011 20:22

I really hope they are number one, and it can be played back to back for all I care (Radio 4 girl Wink). But I do reserve the right to find the Prince of Peace line.......not sure of the word. Not offensive as such. But almost.

For to us a child is born,
	to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
	Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

(Isaiah 9:6)

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 06/12/2011 20:23

Have C+P that in case anyone was wondering why I was making refs to Jesus, not in the spirit of preaching btw. Just so's you know Wink

miSaltireandwine · 06/12/2011 20:25

Aitch - I would assume not, based on the fact that all money raised by poppy Scotland (the fundraising side of things) goes to military chariteis/veterans in scotland. However I could be wrong as poppy Scotland merged in to RBL charities thingy in June

Ooh and we're not allowed to call them regiments now, they are battalions

Esta3GG · 06/12/2011 20:26

Oh Aitch FGS they are professional soldiers. If you don't want to put yourself into a dodgy situation then here's a tip - don't join up.
Plenty of people who work in dangerous occupations will be away from families over the Xmas - oil rig workers, trawler fishermen ....

Ifancyashandy · 06/12/2011 20:29

Again, what Esta said.

Sue, I think the word is blasphemous?

I mean, it is blasphemy. Which is not something I generally get worked up over at all - multicultural country, very glad of freedom of speech, etc. etc. But at Christmastime it does seem a bit ill-chosen.

I am sure it wasn't deliberate though. I think aitch is right about the sentiment, that it must feel so important to hold on to something to believe in.
