Doll play

AIBU to think thatthis woman is cringeworthy and off her rocker weird? She even admitted

"Looking at Finlay for the first time, there was a stronger bond than I had with Becky."

I feel so sorry for the daughter, having to compete with that!

And i don't care that it's from the DM neither!

Those dolls creep me out

But it would seem the poor lady has problems going on

HecateGoddessOfTwelfthNight · 06/12/2011 17:17

Control?

A real child grows up. A real child is their own person. A real child won't always want to do what you want them to, wants to make their own way in life.

A doll, otoh, well, you own them and they'll never want a life of their own.

Maybe.

I'm just guessing.

me too, worra. They look like, well - dead babies. It's really disturbing. I worry about the mental health of someone who gets them and buys a pushchair and a cot and parades them around. It's not healthy.

HecateGoddessOfTwelfthNight · 06/12/2011 17:20

Stranded - it's the Daily Mail. Of course it put in how much she gets in benefits.

Subtext - your tax money is buying this doll for this woman...

HappyCamel · 06/12/2011 17:22

Interesting it says "she's on benefits", "she paid £250" then, at the bottom of the article "the dolls sell for thousands of pounds a time". I hope she isnt spending large amounts of her income on these dolls, that would be very sad for her daughter. It would be more understandable if she was loaded and the money wouldn't be missed.

PlumpDogPillionaire · 06/12/2011 17:27

Oh dear.

Floggingmolly · 06/12/2011 17:27

She doesn't look exactly bright , does she? Shame for the real live child.

rootietootie · 06/12/2011 17:29

I can imagine what the DM was trying to stir re benefits, but personally i think if your a single parent of 1 on benefits, then to spend £500 on 2 dolls and then whatever else on accessories is a bit excessive when you have a rl daughter to be caring for.

Her poor DD, playing second fiddle to a creepy doll

somewherewest · 06/12/2011 17:37

She definitely has ishoos!

dozyrosie · 06/12/2011 17:37

She was UR not to run a hoover round before letting the DM take photos in her house.

PontyMython · 06/12/2011 17:39

I feel really sorry for Becky :(

I can understand people getting one of these to replace a baby who died though. But just because they were 'too lazy' to adopt, WTF?

We watched the documentary the article refers to - we were Shock the whole way through, and Confused.

I wonder if she will stay unemployed because of her new childcare commitments :o

I have deleted what I was going to put, on the grounds that Mumsnet would spontaneously combust.

WilsonFrickett · 06/12/2011 17:45

eeeeeeeeeeeeew!

That poor girl Sad

valiumredhead · 06/12/2011 17:46

Oh dear Sad the poor daughter.

She reminds me of a poor soul that used to carry a doll around where I used to live. She also used to wear EVERY single hair accessory AT THE SAME TIME! Quite obviously nutty as a fruit cake ( I feel qualified to say that as a fully fledges nutter myself Wink)

wifey6 · 06/12/2011 17:50

There was a programme on sky about women that did just that. Spent a fortune on them & treated them like real babies.
Taking them out in prams & in car seats etc. one women bought one to 'fill the gap' her grandson had left when he moved away with this mum. I found it a bit sad & strange at the same time!

somewherewest · 06/12/2011 17:52

Valiumredhead There is a woman like that living near us as well. Wonder if its the same lady! She very obviously did have wider mental health issues.

If the woman in the article does have those kind of issues its pretty insensitive of the DM to splash her and her daughter's names and pictures all over its pages.

valiumredhead · 06/12/2011 17:53

somewhere LOndon?

candytuft63 · 06/12/2011 18:13

There is a woman in my area (west yorks) who wheels a baby doll in a pram around. She is quite well known, and people are in the main very kind because she does obviously have MH issues. However, she doesnt have a dependent child at home which is something else altogether.

IReallyHateMyCat · 06/12/2011 18:20

I wish there were laws to stop newspapers printing stories like this... The woman clearly has some issues.. she wants attention from DM readers and people who see her baby and stop to coo over it but no work...which is fair eough but she shouldn't be allowed to abuse her dd like this. She will be humiliated in school and by her neighborhood. It's shit really. It isn't bad enough her mother ignores her for a doll...

JamieComeHome · 06/12/2011 18:27

I agree with I ReallyHateMyCat

dozyrosie · 06/12/2011 18:51

Maybe my previous comment was a bit flippant. Seriously though IReallyHateMyCat has it exactly right. Her poor DD is bound to be significantly affected by this. I'm guessing that her ex or any other family or friends are not on the scene to help with her possible MH issues. If not then surely SS should get involved and give this woman and her DD some support.
The doll still gives me the creeps though.

Trust the DM to make the fact she is on benefits the main issue here!

I suppose she would be charmingly eccentric if she had a job.

I think the things are horrible but they are very popular. There is woman who has a whole load and takes them out in a white pram which she cleans everyday incase it gets dirt on the wheels. She travelled to the states to get a new one and spent a few days in a hotel 'getting to know her'

That is bonkers.
