AIBU?

To think that as a civilised, animal loving society, we need to do something about this.

I want to start a campaign. This is really getting to me and I am struggling to hold back the tears.

I posted some time ago about my neighbours staffie getting into my garden. He is a big, unneutered boy and he was intimidating my elderly JRT bitch. This has now been resolved and me and neighbours remain on good terms.

They bought another SBT at the weekend and brought her in to show us last night. My neighbour said they are going to mate her with their other SBT.

I told her that I thought this was a bad idea because the rescue centres are full to bursting with unwanted and abused SBT's. She said that they bought a bitch specifically because they would like pups but she said that she saw my point and would discuss it with her husband before making a final desicion. I advised her to ring the RSPCA as well for information on breeding and the consequences of over breeding.

I then went on a few websites (All Dogs Matter, Battersea etc) and they are FULL of SBT's that are unwanted and may never be rehomed.

Why the fuck (sorry, but that's how I feel) don't you need a licence to breed dogs? Or cats? Or any other animal. I seriously hope my neighbours have a change of heart.

Rant over.

Well the government and the RSPCA should put enormous pressure on the bloody Kennel Club to change their rules. The last thing we need is official organisations preventing people from neutering.

The solution might be to make it illegal to tale any money for puppies bred by anyone other than a registered breeder, who would have to apply for a licence, and be subjected to thorough vetting before being granted such.

As it is, people are commanding £500+ for cross-bred puppies. The lure of that is just too strong for some people.

I hear x times a day the old "it's good for them to have a litter" I ask the person if they thought it would be good for a woman/ young girl's health to carry a child to term then give it away, purely for some spurious health benefit. I point out that I have 3 babies and none of those pregnancies was particularly good for my health. Pregnancy puts an enormous physiological strain on the mother, and can actually put her life at risk in some situations. Why people think it would be beneficial healthwise bamboozles me Confused

People seem to think vets advocate neutering to "make money" Sad In fact, we could actually make more money from unneutered bitches- a C-section/ pyo op/ mammary gland strip (all prevalent in unneutered bitches) can make us far more cash than a straightforward spey. Stats from countries where they don't routinely neuter put the incidence of pyometra (a potentially lethal womb infection, which requires emergency surgery in a very sick bitch) to be 23%, almost 1 in 4. A bitch neutered before or just after her first season is almost 99% less likely to get malignant mammary tumours.

I really wish people would look further into it before they get involved in backyard breeding. So many times it ends in heartbreak Sad

I came prepared to disagree because I'm not soft about animals at all. However, I think you're right and that it is downright irresponsible to be breeding more staffies that are likely to end up not finding a home and having to be put down.

Blimey didn't know that about kennel club rules- that's shocking!

I'm a big fan of Staffies and specifically chose one. Never heard that about eating their young, but definitely agree they're better with people than other dogs.
