To think that as a civilised, animal loving society, we need to do something about this.

I want to start a campaign. This is really getting to me and I am struggling to hold back the tears.

I posted some time ago about my neighbours staffie getting into my garden. He is a big, unneutered boy and he was intimidating my elderly JRT bitch. This has now been resolved and me and neighbours remain on good terms.

They bought another SBT at the weekend and brought her in to show us last night. My neighbour said they are going to mate her with their other SBT.

I told her that I thought this was a bad idea because the rescue centres are full to bursting with unwanted and abused SBT's. She said that they bought a bitch specifically because they would like pups but she said that she saw my point and would discuss it with her husband before making a final desicion. I advised her to ring the RSPCA as well for information on breeding and the consequences of over breeding.

I then went on a few websites (All Dogs Matter, Battersea etc) and they are FULL of SBT's that are unwanted and may never be rehomed.

Why the fuck (sorry, but that's how I feel) don't you need a licence to breed dogs? Or cats? Or any other animal. I seriously hope my neighbours have a change of heart.

Rant over.

Blimey didn't know that about kennel club rules- that's shocking!

I'm a big fan of Staffies and specifically chose one. Never heard that about eating their young, but definitely agree they're better with people than other dogs.

I came prepared to disagree because I'm not soft about animals at all. However, I think you're right and that it is downright irresponsible to be breeding more staffies that are likely to end up not finding a home and having to be put down.

The solution might be to make it illegal to tale any money for puppies bred by anyone other than a registered breeder, who would have to apply for a licence, and be subjected to thorough vetting before being granted such.

As it is, people are commanding £500+ for cross-bred puppies. The lure of that is just too strong for some people.

I hear x times a day the old "it's good for them to have a litter" I ask the person if they thought it would be good for a woman/ young girl's health to carry a child to term then give it away, purely for some spurious health benefit. I point out that I have 3 babies and none of those pregnancies was particularly good for my health. Pregnancy puts an enormous physiological strain on the mother, and can actually put her life at risk in some situations. Why people think it would be beneficial healthwise bamboozles me Confused

People seem to think vets advocate neutering to "make money" Sad In fact, we could actually make more money from unneutered bitches- a C-section/ pyo op/ mammary gland strip (all prevalent in unneutered bitches) can make us far more cash than a straightforward spey. Stats from countries where they don't routinely neuter put the incidence of pyometra (a potentially lethal womb infection, which requires emergency surgery in a very sick bitch) to be 23%, almost 1 in 4. A bitch neutered before or just after her first season is almost 99% less likely to get malignant mammary tumours.

I really wish people would look further into it before they get involved in backyard breeding. So many times it ends in heartbreak Sad

Well the government and the RSPCA should put enormous pressure on the bloody Kennel Club to change their rules. The last thing we need is official organisations preventing people from neutering.

TBH I think it should be illegal to own an unneutered male unless you're a registered breeder.

You cant show a neutered dog. my mum shows her male dog but doesnt want to breed, so that wouldnt really work

Staffies are noted for eating their own pups. Tell your neighbour that.
They were bred to fight and they do. It's a breed I never trust near other dogs.

The idea of anyone breeding any more staffies is horrendous. I absolutely love staffies. I read recently that Battersea Dogs' Home ALONE took in approaching 2.500 staffies last year. I have no idea how you can get through to these people, they always think they know best. Angry

Apparently there has been a huge surge in abandoned chihauhaus etc.

Not suprising. Dogs that dont know how to walk because they have been carried everywhere. An unsocialised, untrained Chi is not a pretty thing.

I have seen a couple of posts on FB lately.

'I am thinking of breeding my xxxxx'
'brilliant she is lovely'
'do you think you should? lots of unwanted dogs'
'Yeah but I have loads of people who say they want one'
'AND its GOOD for them to have puppies'
'no it isnt'
'YES IT IS and anyway its not you business, take no notice hun'
'ya my vets says its better for them to have puppies and I think its cruel not to'

And so on. In one case the dog was bred TWICE in one year.

WHen I was a veterinary nurse for the RSPCA I heard all that tripe. That was over 20 years ago. People still reeling out that crap about it being cruel not letting them have babies Hmm

Ok if you dont neuter and you dont bred you are likely to end up with a bitch with a pus filled uterus when they get to about 7.

SO NEUTER you bloody dogs.

I had to pick up mad little dog (inherited from my nan - the dog was insane and dementing and kept getting out) a couple of times from battersea. I didnt see a single dog that wasnt a staffie/staffie cross or a JRT.
I havent anything against staffies but I almost cheer when I see a dog (specially a x breed) that hasnt an ounce of staffie in it.

Not that it makes much difference. They are still animals bred to run all day who get to drag their owner round the block a couple of times a day if they are lucky and never get let off the lead. I agree the rescue places will be full of them soon when the novelty wears off. Sad

I've seen loads of these 'huskies' around too and they are definitely not Akitas. Actually I think they are Malamutes.

I dunno, if they targetted certain breeds ( it's pretty obvious if a dog has it's nads or not ) that are filling the pounds.

Simplistic I know, and no doubt unworkable, which is a damn shame since our pound's full of the poor mutts which are basically sat on death row.

Very difficult to make it illegal to breed unlicensed, but you could indeed make it illegal to sell a dog without a breeder's (or a rescue) licence. I think that would really help, by cutting down the profit motive (yes of course pups would still change hands for cash in pubs, but I'm sure it would make a difference.

A few years ago it was dalmations, after the 101 Dalmations film made them the must have.
Then there were ones born with the 'wrong' spots, splodges, colour wrong. They can be prone to deafness and need alot more excercise and care than people think.

Aaww but they are soo cute as puppies, so that gets overlooked Sad

Yup, I keep seeing husky pups around here too - they're absolutely gorgeous aren't they? But quite a commitment to look after/exercise. People don't always realise.

It's shocking isn't it. Sad

I investigated recently when someone was selling Presa Cana x Staffies on a local forum, there is no law against it.

Only licensed breeders can sell puppies in Sweden, but there's no such law in England.
