to have thrown a nappy in the bin ??

Went to the doctor this morning as have been unwell (im 18 weeks pg). DD came with me and she has just finished a course of horrible strong antibiotics for throat and ear infection.

Just my luck that she decides to explode and fill her nappy in the waiting room which is very busy and she stinks so off i go to change her I had to put the dirty nappy in the bin in the patients toilet as-sorry tmi here-it was liquid and couldnt have been plopped down the loo like i normally would do and the nappy just taken home in a nappy bag.I had forgotten the nappy bags too today so couldnt even bag it before i threw it away.

I went back to waiting room when a lady came in after me complaining loudly about somebody having thrown a dirty nappy in the toilet bin and how disgusting it was she went on and on and on about it and admittedly it was smelly but i dont see what choice i had, yes i could have taken it home but that would have meant taking it back into the waiting room with me and sitting there with it (and believe me it was bad) for half an hour before the doctor called me for my appt which surely would have been worse and offensive to a lot more people.

She went on so much and most of the people had seen me go off to change dd so knew it was me and they were saying yes, its terrible isnt it and tutting.

I dont think there was much i could have done in this situation but the reaction of people has made me wonder if i was being unreasonable ?

Exactly, the bin would have had a bin liner in, so the cleaner would take it out, tie up the sides and dispose of it. To expect the op to carry the dirty runny nappy in her hands and look for an outside bin is Hmm. Where our Drs surgery is, there are no outside bins, you have to go a long way to find one. Rubbish bins are there to put waste in, and that includes nappies if there are no appropriate facilities about. It was in the toilet, people do their business in the toilet so it smells, my goodness some people are so precious.

emsyj · 02/12/2011 13:55

Not everyone who needs to see a GP is ill, or visibly ill...

If someone does a hefty dump that stinks then fair enough the loo will smell for a while - but the smell (eventually) fades. If you leave a stinking nappy in an open bin in the loo then it will stink all day - and judging by my own DD's nappies, would probably permeate the rest of the building too. It's just not the right thing to do to leave a stinky nappy like that. There were other options - ask for a bag, wrap it up in loo roll & take it home, ask the receptionist if there is an outside bin nearby...

And before anyone asks, YES I have taken a whole turd home with me in my nappy bag when DD filled her (washable) nappy and I couldn't prise the bloody thing off the liner.

pictish · 02/12/2011 13:56

OP - yanbu. You did what you had to under the circumstances. No-one in their right mind would take the soiled nappy back out of the toilet with her rather than put it in the BIN!

Ignorew the sillies on this thread who say otherwise....they can traipse about with shitty nappy if they like. I wouldn't.

naturalbaby · 02/12/2011 13:56

between the chances of having exploding bottoms or throwing up kids i've always, always, always got a heavy duty plastic/wet bag in my change bag for this very reason. my nappies are cotton anyway so no matter how gross, would have been triple bagged and taken home.

but if you're caught out then you do the best you can and other people can shove off with their judgy pants.

ariane5 · 02/12/2011 13:57

yes, there was already a bin liner in the bin so it shouldnt be too horrendous for the cleaner who has to empty it.

I do feel guilty that it smelt so bad but i really felt awful, dd was crying and i didn't know what else to do, normally iam quite organised with nappy bags etc but today all that got forgotten i just felt ghastly. Was just a bit of a shock and embarrasing that such abig deal was made out of it in the waiting room i didnt want to offend anybody with it at all but i was surprised how angry and vocal the lady was about it Blush

People forget, the lady was being very childish and silly to make a big issue about it, she should have discreetly told the receptionist about the nappy, no need to act like a little child.

Gingefringe · 02/12/2011 14:00

Couldn't this have gone into one of those sanitary towel bins instead? At least they have some sort of lid on them. I would assume that there would have been one in the toilet.

Someone put a similar smelly nappy in the open bin of our gym changing room recently and the whole changing room absolutely stank until the poor unfortunate cleaner had to remove it.

ariane5 · 02/12/2011 14:02

there was only a teeny little swing bin in there not a sanitary towel one unfortunately

pmsl at the poster who said about ice skating around with it on your foot. Love it!

emsyj · 02/12/2011 14:17

No, the OP should have (at the very least) alerted the receptionist about the nappy. It was her mess, after all.

AgentProvocateur · 02/12/2011 14:20

God, this has reminded me of something! For future reference, please don't use the sanitary towel bin. I worked in a charity that supported women, so lots of women and babies in and out the toilets. You need to pay to get the ST bin emptied, and we paid to have them done every three weeks. Someone put a dirty nappy in it once - and I can see why you'd think that this was a good idea - and we had to remove the whole unit to a far-away corner of the car park because the smell was so bad.

pigletmania · 02/12/2011 14:24

Don't sani bins stink, if its left for 3 weeks I expect it will really honk.

MollyTheMole · 02/12/2011 14:25

yanbu

It was a bit of shit, not radwaste and I would have actually retreived the nappy and sat next to her with it not really yes, actually I would

AgentProvocateur · 02/12/2011 14:26

Yes, they did. It was a horrible organisation to work in. Pennypinching in the extreme, but large salary to the manager. I only lasted four months.

minimisschief · 02/12/2011 14:57

what difference is an outide bin and an inside bin

emsyj · 02/12/2011 15:20

Um, the outside bin is outside and so won't make the toilet stink for anyone else who might want to use it...

cantpooinpeace · 02/12/2011 15:29

I too would have chucked it in the bin. There is probably a cleaner who is paid to keep the toilet (including the bin) clean. IMO YANBU :)

cherryjellybelly · 02/12/2011 15:50

yanbu :) I hope you feel better soon. That lady had nothing better to discuss than a nappyin a bin, not enough going on in her life obviously. I think lots of people would have done the same as you.

halcyondays · 02/12/2011 17:34

yanbu, it was a lined bin in a toilet, surely anybody would put a dirty nappy in it if they needed to change a nappy. what else would you do, wrapping it in loo paper and taking it home with you sounds insane, it was liquid poo which would be a very messy business. I have never in my life seen anybody carrying a dirty nappy around looking for an elusive outside bin, instead of using the toilet bin at the doctors, shopping centre etc.

alysonpeaches · 02/12/2011 18:09

I think you did what you could in a difficult situation. We are not all paragons of virtue and sometimes we forget our nappy bags or whatever. Take no notice of people who talk loudly to make people feel bad. They have a problem.

sunnyweather · 02/12/2011 18:34

what a mean spirited woman to make you feel so bad. If she found the toilet in an unacceptable state sheshould have had a quiet word with the receptionist who would have arranged for someone to sort it out. Public toilets quite often smell of poo it is no big deal - it sound s like the only thing required to remedy the situation was to empty the bin and open a window. OP dont worry just live and learn and make sure you have a stash of nappy bags for next time.

OldMumsy · 02/12/2011 18:42

With small kids 'Shit happens' and you did not have much choice. I would ignore it.

IReallyHateMyCat · 02/12/2011 19:11

It was a bin with a liner ffs. If the surgery dont want smelly diapers laying about they should really get a closed bin.

chandellina · 02/12/2011 19:17

Yanbu, there was no better option. My gp's surgery has big medical waste type bins fortunately

IgnoringTheChildren · 02/12/2011 19:50

In the OP's shoes I would have been tempted to do the same thing, however I never go to our GPs surgery without several nappy sacks because we aren't allowed to leave nappies there at all! The HV reminds me every time we go, even when I'm clearly sticking the nappy back on DS2 after weighing him as it doesn't need changing. Hmm
