...will I be shunned?

People are talking about Christmas hampers too. Are they a thing?

I'm confused and frightened.

I heard about the Christmas PJ thing on MN too. And have taken it up. The PJs are worn throughout the year. This year DD's are pale pink with silver stars. Festive, but not exclusively Christmassy.

What's the Christmas hamper thing?

PsecretPsanta · 02/12/2011 12:40

Wtf rhymes with presto?

Is it the one which starts with T and ends with O? And doesn't really quite rhyme with Presto? Grin

ExitPursuedBySanta · 02/12/2011 12:41

I thought the hamper was a basket that loving mum's filled with festive stuff like the new jim jams, fleecy socks, hot chocolate and marshmallows and a DVD to get snuggly on the sofa on Christmas Eve.

Nothing like Christmas Eve in our house Xmas Grin Wine (Why haven't we got a festive wine?)

ExitPursuedBySanta · 02/12/2011 12:42

Pedant! It is near enough.

TroublesomeEx · 02/12/2011 12:42

Those jarmlies sound lovely PsecretPsanta. Where are they from (haven't bought DD (5)s yet and I think she'd like those!)

I've also got this The Night Before Christmas that I read to the children, and whoever else happens to be in the house at the time, just before the little one goes to bed on Christmas Eve.

TroublesomeEx · 02/12/2011 12:43

Our hamper is home made stuff and a DVD.

Hadn't thought about socks and stuff, but that's really nice.

NinkyNonker · 02/12/2011 12:44

I got that book too! Dd is only 16 months but one day she'll get it.

I love the illustrations!

Lunatic, I don't need new pjs every year!

Also, I have a lot of jarmy days!!! And tend to end up doing housework in mine.

ExitPursuedBySanta · 02/12/2011 12:53

I also have that book but can hardly pick it up without blubbing.

FoxyRevenger · 02/12/2011 12:54

VP your job rules Xmas Grin

TroublesomeEx · 02/12/2011 12:54

I neglected to confess to that myself Exit, but tis true, I do!

Not so much now, but the first couple of years it was tough going!

ShowOfHands · 02/12/2011 13:00

You can bollocks off implying it's anything to do with SPEND SPEND SPEND pictish. Grin

I do it because we have no money and I like to spread out the magic. DD's getting one present from us on Christmas day. A £2.50 pair of pjs, book from the charity shop, hot chocolate decanted out of the tin and a few marshmallows is hardly consumerist. And the story and joy which surrounds it (it's the Master Elf visiting didn't you know?) is just part of creating a bit of magic and happiness over the festive period.

Ariesgirl · 02/12/2011 13:01

"Are they a thing?" is for some reason making me snigger helplessly.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 02/12/2011 13:04

I too have the night before christmas and read it to ds2 every year ds1 too old now. actually so is ds2 but he is soppy like me Xmas Grin is everyone elses really old, small with green cover and lovely drawn pictures.

tethersjinglebellend · 02/12/2011 13:16

SoH, it was your account of the hamper which prompted me to examine my parenting skills. I did not come off well Grin

Grin tethers. I just haven't grown up. I adore Christmas.

I have 4 copies of The Night Before Christmas. No 6 actually if you include dd's pop up versions.

ViviPrudolf · 02/12/2011 13:31

Yeah, s'alright, Foxy Xmas Grin It was quite nice this time last year designing this years' snowflake jammies while it snowed heavily outside... and wearing pyjamas myself at the time....

And that's what I like to hear, Ninky & Exit. Assuage your consumerist guilt at shopping with the Retail Monster with the wholesome thought that you're supporting that lovely lady off Mumsnet Xmas Smile

As for "not needing new pyjamas" - how very dare you.

nickelbabe · 02/12/2011 13:33

people did mention it last year - in fact, that's where I got the idea from.

We're still fucking waiting for the first-born to be born and it'd better hurry up because I'm tempted to buy a plunger from wilko's , but DH and I did Christmas pyjamas last year. It was fab.
Grin

nickelbabe · 02/12/2011 13:35

our pyjamas aren't christmas themed either, btw.

I have got "snow" pyjamas, but I bought them for myself quite a few years ago from debenhams in the january sale - they're Winnie the Pooh and only cost £8.

tethersjinglebellend · 02/12/2011 13:37

How the fuck did I miss it last year?

DD is just three and I have only just started telling her about Father Christmas. I am rubbish.

I am a terrible, terrible mother.

Although, I did buy an advent calendar, so perhaps that will heal some of her mental scars.

Most Christmas hampers are shit. Mainly as I hate most Christmas foods. Ok, if you got me a hamper of non-Christmas deli type items and wine from northern Italy I would be extremely excited. I didn't know about the concept of a Christmas hamper until about 5 years ago though.

I've never even heard of the concept of Christmas pyjamas until reading this thread let alone worn them.

pictish · 02/12/2011 13:41

Apologies SOH I certainly didn't intend any offence to you at all.....I simply scrolled through the hampers thread and thought to myself "yet more ways to spend money".

I think I'm simply going aarrgghhh in general at the money that flies about all over the place at xmas time, that's all.

I think it's ok to be turned off by consumerism at Christmas isn't it? Nothing I wrote was directed at anyone specific.

ShowOfHands · 02/12/2011 13:48

pictish, you didn't offend at all. Hence the Grin, I was being po-faced.

I've argued on here many a time that Christmas is too consumerist. People get so bogged down in piles of presents and how much to spend that they forget the real joy of Christmas. The presents and ££ are a pleasant but small part of Christmas here. The story telling, singing, crafting and general glee comes from elsewhere.

I'm woman enough to admit though that if I did have piles of money I WOULD buy David Mitchell, I would gift wrap him and I wouldn't need Christmas PJs after all. I'm not beyond consumer fantasy at all.

PsecretPsanta · 02/12/2011 14:11

FolkGirl sorry, we're in Germany. They are from a German shop called DM which has nothing to do with the Daily Mail Grin
