To tell DS that he can't go to this birthday party?

Ages ago DS (12) was invited to a birthday party. The party is tonight at a rugby club. DS plays no sports, has no interest in rugby and as far as I know doesn't get on with most of the lads going.

For ages he said he didn't want to go and now all of a sudden he does. I've had another proper look at it and the venue is at the other end of the city (it will take ages to get there) and doesn't finish until 10pm. That means we won't get home until gone 11pm. It starts at 7pm.

Apart from anything else, it will take up a hell of a lot of petrol that I can't afford to replace and it means I'm going to have to faff about buying a last minute birthday present - bearing in mind I'm at work today so god know when I'll find the time to do that.

AIBU to tell him he just can't go? if we didn't have a car there's no way he could get there anyway.

I'm teary at that too. Xmas Blush Lovely ending, I'm glad he had a good time.

It's sounds like you just want us to tell you it's okay to not allow him to go? TBH though I can however still remember how horrific it was to be the only one in my class to not go to a school party....however wrong it is it leads to exclusion from a lot come Monday morning.

EmpireBiscuit · 03/12/2011 12:06

This is a good lesson for him about RSVP ing to a event

My son (11) used to this all time he would get invited some were say no then on the day say he had changed his mind then whine when it was usually to late to include him so I basically said now

His first answer is his last answer because I can't be doing with it not to mention the other people um would now have made plans for extra who currently said they were not coming

So glad it went well! I still remember when my dd was in year 7 she said "There are parties- but i'm not asked to them"

Just reassure the soft hearted amongst you, she's now in year 11- and goes to loads of parties!

soandsosmummy · 03/12/2011 18:05

Oh OP that's so lovely to read. I'm really glad you made the effort and that the result was so lovely for both you and him. You're a great mum and I hope that when dd is 13 and wants to go to a party I'll remember your post and make the effort even if I really don't feel like it.

CamperFan · 03/12/2011 18:56

Oh I'm all teary now. Good for you OP.
