It really winds me up! I'm not on here too often, but I tend to come on in the morning while DS is having his breakfast, and there's always the usual threads which only need a little common sense.

So far in the past few days, I've seen:
My baby hasn't moved since yesterday, shall I get it checked out?
My DH has hit me, do I call the police?
Please come and hold my hand, I'm having a panic attack

What's happened to common sense to call the midwife/police/doctor? If I was in a situation I wouldn't be on MN asking what I should do. MN gives out so much useful and great advice, but I wonder why people post in such circumstances?

Perhaps you should stop winding yourself up.

What happened to common sense indeed This thread has an obvious answer too.

Shall I spell it out for you? Don't open them. Or if you find you have, hide it.

NoobyNoob · 02/12/2011 07:33

Oh believe me, I do hide them. You do have to open a thread before hiding though, yes?

OP posts:
coldwed · 02/12/2011 07:36

I was going to be rude but trying really hard to be nice today.

Akiram · 02/12/2011 07:36

If someone is having a panic attack then posting on here can actually help them take their mind of it and calm down.
If someone is worried about their baby maybe they just need reassurance and advice on what to do?
If someone has been hit by their DP maybe they are so ground down that they can't see things clearly.
You don't have to click on them in order to hide them, just don't click on them in the first place surely?

TestAnswers · 02/12/2011 07:41

Whilst you have a point I don't see it as that big a deal. The person posting them is in distress and maybe isn't thinking clearly? Not interested - don't open and/or hide.

I don't think your problem is distressing/interesting/controversial enough to justify starting a thread, YABU.

SanTEEClaus · 02/12/2011 07:44

Not really. I often hide threads without opening them.

I wish I'd hidden this without opening it.

::unlike coldwed, I am not being nice today::

DownbytheRiverside · 02/12/2011 07:44

I'm often disappointed by AIBU threads where the poster is being perfectly reasonable. Xmas Smile
But yes, in this case YABU. What for one person is a huge issue, for another is either obvious or mundane. So don't respond. To really dislike to the point of posting seems excessive to me.

DownbytheRiverside · 02/12/2011 07:44

Or what TA said.

LoveBeingFullOfChristmasCheet · 02/12/2011 07:47

It's called being scared and alone, probably best if you do hide rather than reply.

Esta3GG · 02/12/2011 08:09

I hate threads like this one.

VFVF · 02/12/2011 10:26

Possibly not the best examples to use NoobyNoob but I do remember a thread on Nethuns once (before I discovered the delights of MN) where the mother posted something along the lines of

Poster - DC has just burned her hand really badly! What should I do?
Thousands of replies - Get off NM and get to A&E!
Poster - No need to be mean! It's really bad and I didn't know what to do. I can't ring anyone because I'm trying to run the tap.
Thousands of replies - Yes you can ring simeone, if you can type away on MN then you can bloody ring for a taxi/ambulance!!
Poster - Why are you being horrible? It's really really bad and DC has passed out. Should I go to hospital?
Thousands of replies - YES! YES! Get the FUCK off Netmums!

(Slightly exaggerated as of course you can't swear on NetMums Grin )

velvetvamp · 02/12/2011 10:27

It should be obvious that these people are merely seeking reassurance. Get over yourself.

AntiqueAnteater · 02/12/2011 10:35

i mourn the passing of common sense regularly when reading the crap threads on here :)

NoobyNoob · 02/12/2011 11:10

Thank God VFVF gets what I mean! I've seen them on here and over there.

And for those who are asking why I started this thread, why not? There have been threads on here asking if it's unreasonable to have another biscuit FFS.

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 02/12/2011 11:13

I'm with Akiram. Aside from the "My DC is seriously injured, help!" ones those aren't situations where common sense usually applies. It tends to be lacking when you're panicking.

wifey6 · 02/12/2011 11:18

downbytheriver....Grin the Santa smiley!
I want one!!
I think people find reassurance/comfort in MN & although the post about the girl's burnt hand is extreme...people often reach out to people on here when they are alone in RL..emotionally & physically.

coraltoes · 02/12/2011 11:20

It's the "am I pregnant?" ones that get me...how the hell do we know?!
