Pictures of DP holding his passport photo page and photo driving licence

Earlier I was sat at the laptop and DS1 was putting giant chocolate buttons in his eye sockets (dont ask Grin ) and the chocolate was melting all over his face. I asked him to go wipe his face, but before he did so I wanted him to see how funny he looked and as he's only little (2.7) and cant see himself in the mirror, I decided to show him what he looked like on the webcam

I'm not sure how other webcams work but ours can take pictures or videos. In the webcam programme there were close-up pictures of DP holding up the photo page of his passport and also of his photocard driving licence. I thought it was bizarre and asked him what they were for. He got a bit funny and dismissed them as nothing. By this point my suspicions had been aroused so I kept questioning and he said there more I ask, the less likely he is to tell me, and then he left the room. I went to find him a few minutes later, and without me saying anything he said that he could sense an arguement starting Hmm

I am really intrigued to know what they could've been for. The pictures were taken back in July

So, people of Mumsnet, AIBU to a.) Want to know why DP took the pictures and
b.) Want to know if you know what it could've been for

DP has taken out a payday loan behind my back before but wouldn't have thought the company would need pictures...maybe? I really dont know

Would it be for a porn site? I admit that I lack libido, and in principal I am not too bothered if he uses it, as it is better than physically cheating. I know he has looked at porn on the computer before so it wouldn't be a shock if this is what it would be for

Well if he is getting secret loans it obviously isn't working that well!

I am very curious too and only he will give you the right answer!!! It's obviously something he feels guilty about. If you think it could be finance/porn and it isn't a problem for you then tell him that and say his honesty is more important than anything he may have done.

sorry - didn't see he has potential gambling issues. My moneys on that then (no pun intended).

And yes, I would be cautious of merging the finances too much

forum.sbrforum.com/sportsbooks-industry/1368165-i-need-help-my-account-bet365.html

Noticed this is an American site but these companies could operate similarly all over the place. It's quite a long winded few posts but the people make references to being asked for photos of them holding their I.D.

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 01/12/2011 19:59

I think it's fair to ask about the difference if the issue is financial. £600 is not a that big a deal if you're paying for food and clothing.

I would assume gambling given his history. And US sites if they want ID - it's a guess but they have 21 as an age limit.

SardineJam · 01/12/2011 20:02

Bourbon thanks, i'll take a look. I know that he has used Bet365 before...

Billcompton how would I check?

Sorry was just sorting kids out. Go to internet options, then settings, then view files.

My ex used to delete stuff all the time, but didn't realise they were still stored in there, so caught him cheating on so many dating sites!

BillComptonstrousers · 01/12/2011 20:51

He might have deleted those as well though, if they have ben deleted I would be a bit suss to be honest!

cricketballs · 01/12/2011 20:56

My dh is a member of bet365 (plays Irish lottery instead of english!) and he has never had to do that; I know this as I completed the registration for him and enter his 1 line every week, he can't remember the user name or password Grin

FredFredGeorge · 01/12/2011 21:01

Even mundane places like facebook or Google+ can demand that sort of "proof" of who you are, however it's very unlikely for a MrSardineJam (actually not literally that, they probably would as they'd want prove that was a real name) but if he's called something that matches a famous person or similar.

SandStorm · 01/12/2011 21:06

On a brighter note maybe he's planning a surprise trip abroad for you and is making sure there is a copy of his passport and driving licence easily accessible in case they get misplaced or stolen whilst abroad?

ratspeaker · 01/12/2011 21:10

Some scammers y'know the youhavewonalottery, youhaveaninhertiance, yaddayadda they require "proff" of who you are to make the scam feel "real"
Has any moey been sent by moneygram or western union?

just a thought

ratspeaker · 01/12/2011 21:10

moey = money

hickerybobp · 01/12/2011 21:54

Don't want to get you worried, but about 3 years ago I was on a couple of dating sites, they had requested pictures like this to make accounts "verified" as a lot of people on there were lying about age etc or making fake accounts.
I think if it was to do with finance or gambling they would probably require an actual photocopy/scan of the ID. Hmmm

GreenIceAndChristmasHam · 01/12/2011 21:59

I think it's gambling.

Sarraburd · 01/12/2011 22:04

Have to agree that if he has a gambling history, that is more likely than porn (esp if he gambled to extent of needing loan, he'd definitely be embarrassed about you catching him again)

oldcodger · 01/12/2011 22:24

Have you heard of match betting? Does he do a lot of horse racing or betting on football matches and stuff? I don't know much about the match betting (my OH does) but you do need to provide photo evidence to a lot of companies before they will pay out.

Strawbezza · 01/12/2011 22:25

I'd say gambling too.

oldcodger · 01/12/2011 22:27

Oh you don't normally need to have a pic of your face included though.

SardineJam · 02/12/2011 08:17

Billcompton thanks for that, I looked and its got mostly the gambling sites, so nothing "special" or surprising

Oldcodger the gambling that I refer to is football betting and horse racing

Not sure why he was acting so dodgy, if it was only him using the pictures for a bet/gambling payout. I will ask him directly tonight

Takeresponsibility · 02/12/2011 09:04

I don't know why he has done this but it is incredibly foolish. We have people who turn up without passports and say oh I lost it a couple of years ago I thought I could travel on my driving licence (no you can't) but more importantly your passport contains enough info to have your ID stolen and loans/mortgages/credit cards taken out in your name, criminal acts committed in your name etc and it is a hell of a job clearing that up. The majority of people have never thought about this aspect of your passport details getting into the public domain and the potential for ID theft.

Your idiot DP has put on the internet his name, nationality, date of birth and address this is enough to have his ID stolen and bank loans etc being pinned on him.

SardineJam · 02/12/2011 09:20

Takeresponsilbility you are so so right, and I will point this out to him - he is street-smart enough to not get involved in things that ratspeaker mentions, but never mind who has seen and is potentially using that information

OP posts:
Acekicker · 02/12/2011 15:32

Honestly I'd be more concerned about the possibility of the gambling getting out of control than sending ID to a legitimate company (assuming he's sent it to Bet365). One of the warning signs of potential addiction (any addiction, not just gambling) is starting to be secretive about your activity; combined with the fact he had to take a payday loan out once this year to cover gambling costs I would suspect he's certainly at risk of becoming a problem gambler. Please think about contacting Gamcare for support and advice.
