To think this woman is minging?

I was in Sainsburys the other day when I heard this woman shout to her DD (about 9/10 yo) to grab some rolls. The girl went over to the baskets where they have the fresh bread, picked up a bagel, put her nose through the hole and then licked it. The woman, who had been watching the hole time, walked over saying "That's not a roll it's a bagel", before taking it off her DDs nose and REARRANGING IT NEATLY AT THE FRONT OF THE DISPLAY! Sorry for the caps but I was so disgusted I nearly threw up on the spot! Please tell me this isn't normal behavior? Grin

No it's not normal!

What did you say to her?

DoesNotGiveAFig · 01/12/2011 12:35

SN?

lljkk · 01/12/2011 12:35

gross! But pmsl. Did you tell the staff (I hope)?

JingleAllTheSoddingWay · 01/12/2011 12:36

Gross but laughing at the spelling mistake. Hope that was deliberate! Grin

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 01/12/2011 12:37

That is vile and no not normal at all!!!

I am never buying fresh bread again now Confused and feel slightly sick!

MissTapestry · 01/12/2011 12:41

I didn't say anything, I was rushing round as I was shopping for work, and I don't even know what made me notice wish I hadn't Grin . Nope, genuine spelling mistake Jingle, it's the way I tell 'em!

doesnot Does it matter about SN? Surely it was up to the mother to deal with the germ ridden bagel situation?

Walkinginwonderland · 01/12/2011 12:41

Ah. Sneeze buns. I won't buy from the uncovered bakery bits.

StealthPenguin · 01/12/2011 12:43

SN somehow excuses the mother from allowing her daughter to lick fresh produce and then put it back?!

I'd have been furious, and would have informed a member of staff to remove the item from the display.

If my child did that, I would at least have the decency to purchase the item so that no-one else has to eat a bagel with added bogey-cheese and tonguelove!

StaceymAloneForver · 01/12/2011 12:52

i would have bought the bagel/bun, that woman is vile!

Daughteroflilith · 01/12/2011 13:04

YANBU. She should have had the decency to buy it. Or, at the very least, take it up, "accidentally" drop it on the ground, and leave it there where it would be disposed of by staff.

ViviPrudolf · 01/12/2011 13:04

Stacey I initially read that as though you were speaking from the PoV of the OP rather than the plebby mother Grin

StaceymAloneForver · 01/12/2011 13:05

vivi sorry you jsut made me re-read and it makes me out to be a bit of a weirdo! Grin i meant if i was the kids plebby mother of course, i don't normally spend my time covetting other peoples germy stuff, honest guv!!

mistressploppy · 01/12/2011 13:08

Urgh! Yes, she was a minger, and clearly thought no-one was watching!

WhoopsyLa · 01/12/2011 13:09

Gak.

This is why I NEVER by bread from baskets....everyone's pinching them and sniffing them and sneezing all over them all day.

Blech. YANBU but YABU for not saying anything!

kreechergotstuckupthechimney · 01/12/2011 13:44

YANBU. I often wondered why you get a little set of tongs to take your bread product out with.
I never use them, if I'm going to buy a roll or seven I know what ones I want and pick them up.
Clearly Sainsbo's need to introduce a spit guard and nose pincher.

helendigestives · 01/12/2011 14:00

I work in a bakery. Customers regularly pick up an item, squeeze it, sniff it, put it back down, and then looked confused/offended when I remove it from the display and put it into the bin. [shakes head] YANBU.

Ouchywawa · 01/12/2011 14:06

Bleurgh.

I saw a child pick up a piece of cake in the cafe at the Natural History Museum, take a bite out of it and then put it back...her Dad rushed her away...I told the cashier as I couldn't stand the thought of someone else innocently picking it up!

TroublesomeEx · 01/12/2011 14:16

My colleague tells the tale of the day he went to a bakery to buy a cake and pointed to the cake he wanted. The assistant picked it up and colleague said "um no, actually I think I'll have that one", the assistant picked it up and he changed his mind again.

This happened a few more times until the assistant exasperatedly asked "have you decided which one you want yet?" To which my colleague replied "yes, I want the one you don't pick up with your bare hands".

I hope it's true! Grin

pigletmania · 01/12/2011 14:36

Yuck, that is why I don't buy loose bread/rolls.

RainboweBrite · 01/12/2011 14:39

Stories like these are the reason why I usually buy packaged goods. Ugh!

Candid · 01/12/2011 14:42

Yuk thats put me right off fresh bread rolls.

I once saw two teenagers open cartons of Ben & Jerry's type of icecreams, put their fingers into it and get a taste before returning them and deciding on one.

Now I always check that the seals are properly closed.

pictish · 01/12/2011 14:47

Yanbu...if someone else buys that bagel they will most likely die, or at the very least, lose a limb.

GoTheFkToSleep · 01/12/2011 14:50

My DD - aged 2 at the time - once licked a loose head of broccoli in Waitrose (of all places). Was so shocked and horrified I bundled her away from the display. Then realised that all I needed to do to remedy was to buy said head of broccoli. Unfortunately I couldn't remember which one it was. I picked a random one and bought it.... At least broccoli is usually cooked

PopcornMouse · 01/12/2011 14:52

Seriously, never buy loose self-serve food. EVER.

I saw the exact same thing happen with a grown woman and a krispy kreme last month, and I also saw someone (again, a middle aged woman Hmm ) dipping her finger into the salad dressing at Harvester last month. Some people are grim.

samstown · 01/12/2011 14:59

As someone else said, why on earth would the little girl having special needs, mean that it is still ok for the mum to put the bagel back on the shelf?!!! (Or did you mean the mum might have SN?)

I am pretty immune to most gross stuff (germs are good and all that!) but that is disgusting!
