To be scared about birth after today?

Apologies in advance for typos, my iPhone thinks it knows what I mean more than I do. I am due on Thursday and met with my MW today for bloods as my platelet count (bloods' clotting agent) is low. I am having a planned HB as I did with my son (20 mo) however this baby is measuring as much bigger than my ds did. Ds was a week late and weighed 7 lbs 8 oz. they used ye trusty measuring tape and measured me at 41 cm today and said they may have to dislocate the baby's shoulder in order to get it through should my pelvis not be looking like it's going to give at all. I saw the OBGUN cons. 3 weeks ago who gave me the go ahead for my HB but now the MW has said this I'm suddenly a nervous wreck and I've worked so hard at preparing myself for this birth! (first birth was 4 hours no tears just has and air after a huge phobia of dying finally passed). Anyone else been told something equally as scary to find it turned out to be nothing?

I don't think measurements are enough reason to worry, the midwife was just giving worst-case-scenario info. Even sizing scans are inaccurate, mine were way off on weights. You can ask for a sizing scan though - it can take a better measurement of baby's skull size. I had a 4th degree tear with my daughter so had planned c-sections for the other two, and for son no.1 they had trouble getting him out by c-section, took ten minutes of wriggling his head back and forth and had to make a bigger incision because his head was 99th percentile, so god knows how much damage he would have done coming out naturally... if you are worried, get the scan :-) Try not to let it spoil your lovely natural birth experience. And good luck!!

Shemademedoit; my cons just said that unless I dipped enough for a transfusion his only advice would be to give me the jan to eject the placenta so the MW could see any potential bleeding. Thanks si much for sharing your stories- I think I'm getting myself mentally prepared, that and it's.40 and I'm up because the basket of ironing was disturbing my sleep... Nesting perhaps? Will follow advice and just be on all fours. I laboured that way lay time by delivered on my side! Thanks for the good birthing vibes. Will report when the little bugger turns up! Grin

Oh yes my MW has booked me in for a growth scan on Monday and a sweep. Lucky me.

I wouldn't be too worried about the measurements. I had multiple scans which because they were convinced DS was enormous - 10lb plus. He was 6 1/2 lbs.

You do occasionally get a midwife who comes out with something random. All mine have been brilliant and then I got one who got in a huge flap about the way the baby is lying and started talking about scans and no homebirth. I have spoken to some other HCPs who say the position the baby is in is entirely normal and they have no idea what she was going on about.

Think I might be in slow labour. Cramping back and top of thighs and very unsettled. I woke up 10 cms gone last time so not too sure how labour starts. It's niggly though!

Oh, how exciting, Exquisite - I hope things have progressed for you and it is all going swimmingly Smile.

Please do report back - I love to sniff a new baby's head

ExquisiteChristmasCake · 01/12/2011 16:37

Still aching and cramping so it might just be nothing but by golly I'm uncomfortable Sad

And it's my due date and babies are never born on bloody time!

Oh - v exciting. Sending positive vibes. And for info, DS was 'huge' on growth scans and fundal measurement - he ended up being 8lb8oz (so big but not beyond reason). DD was fine on fundal measurement - just about 1-2 cm out. She was 10lb2oz. But a totally straightforward, natural birth without even a tear - let alone SD. And her birth was much less painful than DS's. (And she did arrive on her due date - it does happen!)

Kayzr · 01/12/2011 16:47

DS2 arrived on his due date!! Good luck!!

maxybrown · 01/12/2011 17:32

ooh good luck!

I was told about 3 weeks before DS was born that I "had a big un in there" Hmm then I was panicking like mad. He was my first, so didn't know what to expect anyway and all my family are small - I am just under 5ft. He was predicted by midwife at measurements and a really good prodding Hmm that he would be over 10lb - she was very proud as she had not gone one wrong yet.............he was 6lb 8!!! Gossip was rife amongst the MW's - as apparently she realy does always get it right! Grin

ExquisiteChristmasCake · 01/12/2011 18:17

Ooo Maxy luckily for you she had it wrong! Just had my third bath of the death, uncomfortable but nothing more-and I've suddenly gone off mince pies!

5% of babies are born on their due date - my DS4 was Smile (none of the others, mind..)

A 'normal' sized head is actually quite important as its pressure on the cervix helps with a cascade of hormones that aid dilatation and make things go smoothly.
Some of the most difficult deliveries I had dealings with were VBs of premature babies Sad - small heads, often difficult deliveries.

Not saying anybody should aim for record breaking noggins Grin btw!

You just keep pacing and bouncing

maxybrown · 01/12/2011 21:29

she is - she is on another thread, def in labour!! Grin

PacificDogwood · 01/12/2011 21:52
Grin Thanks!
samwellsbutt · 01/12/2011 22:11

i really wouldnt worry, my mw and the consultant seemed to want to freak me out over this baby telling me that it was 5 weeks bigger than my dates i went for a scan and apparently baby is bang on size for dates. so tape measuring means jack shit they do seem to have gone big baby mad of late never had this prob with my last and he was big.

WhiteTrash · 01/12/2011 22:27

Good luck with the birth, you'll be fine!

I measured really big at the end of my second pregnancy. Much bigger than when I was at the same stage with my first who was 8lb 14.5ozs but it was because the first was very engaged by that point and subsequent babies are free making the bump bigger. My second was 9lb 5ozs so not much heavier at all and both popped pur a treat, easy births.
