To send him into school from now on in Jeans?

DS2 is 7. His school have a uniform, and although it's not enforceable, it's encouraged that they wear it.

In August i bought him several pairs of new grey school trousers in preperation for the coming school year, thinking he would get mst of the year out of them.

Today he has come home with yet another hole in the knee of his trousers. That's the fifth pair he's gone through in the past six weeks, and i am hearty sick of it.

I've explained till i'm blue in the face that he needs to look after his things, and this includes his clothes, but it's in one ear and out t'other.

It's got to the point now where i'm inclined to spend the money i would use to replace the school trews on jeans for him instead - at least they are more hardwearing and durable.

If i do so though, i know the head's going to pull a face, but frankly, it's not her that has to afford to replace them.

AIBU in sending him to school in jeans from now on?

Yabu!! He will stick out like a sore thumb

valiumredhead · 28/11/2011 16:07

Mend the hole? Confused

squeakytoy · 28/11/2011 16:07

I would get black jeans. They look smarter than blue, but will be much better wearing than the trousers..

Although, in winter, wet denim is a lot more uncomfortable to wear, and harder to dry too, compared to polyester trousers.

Fifth pair in six weeks Confused does his feet not work and he spends all his time on his hands and knees?Smile

valiumredhead · 28/11/2011 16:09

Get some of that iron on mending tape - cut it and iron on the reverse side. Done!

deemented · 28/11/2011 16:10

No, i can't mend them - there is literally no knee in them left to mend.

In previous years i had bought Asda three packs, and they didn't last long, so this year went to M&S instead, thinking they'd be better. Not so.

Never heard of mending tape - will have a look at that, thanks.

I'm beginning to wonder, Susie!

I used to use one pair to cut up to make patches, then iron on the patches on the inside of the knees.

Ragwort · 28/11/2011 16:12

Send him in shorts Grin.

Bright pink mending tape as an incentive to stop him trashing his trousers?

ouryve · 28/11/2011 16:13

I find some trousers more hard wearing than others. The Next combat style ones last DS2 forever (and he is always on his knees). Any I've ever bought from M&S end up with holes in after a couple of weeks.

Shop around and use old ones and some bondaweb to repair and reinforce others from behind.

valiumredhead · 28/11/2011 16:14

OP it comes in different colours and you match it to the colour of the holey item of clothes. I always keep some in the kitchen drawer just in case!

deemented · 28/11/2011 16:15

Genius idea to use old one to cut up for patches - thank you!

So i would BU to send him in jeans then? It's either that or his sisters skirt Wink

Funnily enough I get M and S trousers for ds as they are much better quality and harder wearing ime.

deemented · 28/11/2011 16:15

Will look out for it, Vallium, thanks.

I got ds BHS trousers and they are lasting well (so far!)

HeraldAngelSinging · 28/11/2011 17:19

Are you one of those who cannot patch or darn? Get your act together. I'm sure there will be someone nearby who can show you how to do it.

suburbandream · 28/11/2011 17:24

tell him that you will be buying him new school trousers for christmas! Bet he will take more care of them then Wink

Blu · 28/11/2011 17:32

He probably isn't doing anything deliberate, or actually being careless. Ordinary football playing accounts for much wear and tear of trousers.

maxybrown · 28/11/2011 17:44

I would return them to M&S if he's gone through them that quickly, tbh. I bet they refund you. I returned polo shirts fomr there as they ended up with holes in after only a few wears and DS never takes his jumper off! I thought the M&S trousers were fine - until I bought them from Next. The gae 4 I buy cost £7.50 a pair and miles thicker/better quality

corlan · 28/11/2011 17:48

One of the boys in my daughters class wore shorts until year 6 because of this - even in winter.
