She had the baby, who must of been around a year old, strapped in the car with the adult seat belt nothing else, no car seat, just the adult belt!!!!!!! What was she thinking. The nursery is a good 10 minute drive from anywhere as well !!!!Sad

The website directgov has some useful info on seatbelts and where the exceptions lie.

For classic cars for example, children over three years can ride without any restraints at all so long as they ride in the back. Whether you would want them to is a different matter.

tanfastic · 28/11/2011 16:48

I wouldn't risk it. I had an accident where someone pulled out of a side road and smashed straight into my car. I'd just dropped Ds off at nursery. Dread to think what would have happened if he'd been in the car even in a proper car seat. Luckily only I was injured.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 28/11/2011 16:54

Fatalities in RTAs have gone down since adults and children have been required to be appropriately restrained.

FUCKING NANNY STATE BASTARDS.

How fucking dare they intervene and save people's lives.

Wankers.

TheCountessOlenska · 28/11/2011 16:54

God, do people really spend time watching car crashes on youtube - ghoulish or what!!

I would assume it was a one off and calling the police seems a major over- reaction to me.

JamieComeHome · 28/11/2011 16:58

I wouldn't do it. I've been in a serious accident with children in the car, and of course, I never expected that to happen. I would never take any such risks with car-seats

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 28/11/2011 17:05

I am very against this, very judgy about it too...
But I did it yesterday. For the first time ever.

I had walked to visit elderly relatives with DS in the buggy. I am pregnant and my sciatica was agony. I couldnt stand, let alone walk. So we had a lift home (night time so no buses) both of us in the back of the car, DS with his own seatbeat on (sat very still like a good boy).
My only other option would have been a taxi and no safer, so why would that be okay?
What should I have done? (genuine question, I dont want to have to do it again!!)

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 28/11/2011 18:33

Just a quick bump, wondered if anyone had a suggestion for me above ^^ :) Ta!

JamieComeHome · 28/11/2011 18:35

It was far from ideal, but of course it was OK. I suppose if it's likely to happen again - car seat at you relative's, or one of those rucksack-come-carseats (will link in a minute)

JamieComeHome · 28/11/2011 18:36

backpack carseat

JamieComeHome · 28/11/2011 18:38
  • also, some taxi firms have car seats on hand if you ask
BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 28/11/2011 18:44

Now that is clever. Thanks!!
I actually do have two carseats, one stays in my mums car (if I'm getting a lift anywhere its normally with her) and one stays in the house (I dont drive btw)

As I said though, its the first time its happened, so in theory it wont happen again for a long time...? The one time we have needed a lift before was when DS was tiny and then I got a lift home, got his babyseat and went back to get him (this wasnt essential though, more "you cant take him out in this weather" Grin) Couldnt do this yesterday though, no-one to leave DS with...

KateShmate · 28/11/2011 18:56

We've had to do this before..
Was 26weeks preg with triplets and my 20month old was at home with me, unfortunately this was the day that car went into garage (only for an hour or so, so didnt take seats out) - suddenly went into labour.. we had no time to go to garage and get carseat or borrow someone elses - just take DD straight to nursery on way to hospital..
Of course no mother would do it if she didnt have to, so Im guessing she has a valid reason.
May be that, for whatever reason, hasnt got carseat and simply HAS to go somewhere (hospital etc) asap..
The list of possibilities could go on forever..

WilsonFrickett · 28/11/2011 19:06

Beyond its no safer to be in a taxi than a car without a car seat, of course - but it isn't illegal. If the police had caught you in the car without a car seat, the driver could be fined up to £500.

deste · 28/11/2011 19:24

I once parked up ouside a remote shop. I could hear a baby crying but could not see one. I checked the car in front of me and a four month old baby was sitting at an angle on the front seat with the seat belt round it's neck. The baby was going blue in the face so I took the liberty of removing it from the car and taking it into the nearest shop where the mum was having a conversation with the assistant. It was about twenty years ago so not sure if I would remove a baby now from a car. So I do agree that it is not on.

zookeeper · 28/11/2011 19:24

Whilst it's far from ideal I don't think it's that big a deal really. I would never not get a taxi or a bus because the child wasn't appropriately restrained either.

So shoot me.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 28/11/2011 19:29

Of course it's not safe and of course YANBU to do a double take. It's not something most people would do as a matter of course or preference.

But I assume you know nothing of her circumstances or the pressures she's under. I'm with KateShmate on giving the benefit of the doubt.

FreudianSlipper · 28/11/2011 19:32

i hate these sort of threads its not a debate, its a look how bad others are i would never do such a thing, poor baby was in danger but i did not bother to say anything becasue i did not want to get involved

well done you
