To be sick to death of all these "Look at me! Look at my kids! Look at my house!" books and television?

Kirstie Allsop's doing my nut. The woman is an estate agent FFS, surely there are other women who are better qualified to write books and present programmes on British crafts? Every time I see her flouncing around in front of her Aga at fucking Meadowgate I want to dry-heave. The rich husband and the live-in nanny who make all this hobbying possible are nowhere to be found, of course.

Joanna Gosling's book (which she's been plugging away on Mumsnet despite apparently having nicked all her material from this site) is beyond bollocks. The woman admitted herself she has a cleaner and a babysitter - doesn't this disqualify her from teaching the rest of us how to keep house? She's a breakfast TV presenter, why's she being photographed looking picturesque in a hardware store?

Oh, and I'm really, really struggling to give a fuck about Sarah Beeny's attempts to hang on to her 97-room mansion.

I know I don't have to watch their telly or read their 'books', but seriously, what does that leave on the schedules?

I loved Mary Berry on Great British Bake-Off. I loved Amanda Vickery's series.

Where are they now? Why oh why can we not have some women of substance that we actually admire on our screens, instead of all this titty TV totty?

There's Monica on Masterchef.

Except that my DH fancies her.

ZZZenAgain · 26/11/2011 15:42

I never read/watch anything like that. It just makes me feel tired but someone must like it

Merrylegs · 26/11/2011 15:47

YABU because I love Kirstie. She is just so jolly and pretty.

However I have never heard of Joanna Gosling, but yeah, she does sounds insufferable and on that basis I am quite prepared to believe she is beyond bollocks.

mad4mainecoons · 26/11/2011 15:50

YANBU
i completely agree!
I love crafting but kirsty alsopp beings my hackles up, she is so fake and i just cannot bear to watch her being pandered to! Grrrrr.

And sarah beeny! Grrr my Dh loves the programme and frequently will comment on how she is such a natural mother, the kids look so happy...."why cant you be more like sarah beeny, and less stressed?"......Um because she has a nanny and pots of cash FFS!!!

Grrrrrrr

thomasbodley · 26/11/2011 15:51

I don't love Kirstie. Her sunny TV personality is so fake: she showed her true colours at Comic Relief's Celebrity Apprentice - she's a vile, spoilt madam who can't stand other women.

Sarah Beeny has two nannies, actually, TWO. Although I don't detest her quite as much as I do the others - at least she gets her hands dirty and has experience of running proper, successful businesses.

When Kirstie Allsop was advising Grant Shapps on the national housing strategy I nearly had a seizure. The woman doesn't even have GCSEs and yet she's qualified to guide public policy??? I'm livid just thinking about it now.

ElderberrySyrup · 26/11/2011 15:58

Sarah Beeny is allowed, because she is self-made and self-deprecating (she said herself she was only able to succeed like she did because of the rising property market) and we like watching her crazy brother and the whole Rise Hall thing is crazy enough to be interesting.
However, the treehouse episode was pretty nauseating.

Kirsty is just a pain. I would love to see some really good programmes about crafts, presented by people who actually know their stuff.

thomasbodley · 26/11/2011 16:02

Yes, I must admit, I loved Dickon Beeny. (Why does that sound so rude?!)

Joanna Gosling, BBC journalist, is writing fake reviews for her book on Amazon. I saw this morning whilst Christmas shopping. I'm embarrassed for her. Can you imagine Mary Beard doing something like that?

coccyx · 26/11/2011 16:07

Love Booby Beeny.
Used to like Allsop but now she is awful

coccyx · 26/11/2011 16:08

Off to google Joanna Gosling

Crazyfatmamma · 26/11/2011 16:51

Myleene Klass gets me she has a baby and brings out numerous baby books including a pregnancy diary and a clothing range- She isnt the first woman in history to have children, but she seems to think she is now the pregnancy /child guru she need so get over herself quick. Rant over.

thomasbodley · 26/11/2011 16:59

I've thought of another one.

Sophie Dahl.

How could I have forgotten? A fat/thin/fat/thin supermodel is a natural as a TV chef, right?

Do they actually research the appeal of these programmes before they spend our TV licence on them?

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 26/11/2011 17:02

Have totally and utterly gone off Kirstie since all this home crafting wankery.

Don't even get me started on Sophie! grrrrr.

Still love old Beeny though.

liveinazoo · 26/11/2011 17:07

not unreasonable.in my experience anyone whosmiles in a saintly fashion whilst be full time working mum with spotless house and hobbys coming out off her ears is getting a lot of help somewhere.for some the "make do and mend" mentality is a lovely jolly to join in with (and make money out of)which i personally find a bit offensive.still when (and if) hard times pick up theyll jump onto the next pony and stop ramming their fake thiftyness/perfect lives all over the t.v.i live in hope....

carabos · 26/11/2011 17:13

Kirstie and Sarah rather give the lie to the prevailing wisdom that women have to be very young, thin and pretty to succeed on telly. Neither of them could even squeeze into that category and for that we must be thankful.

I hate all those shows. I think that crap has a lot to answer for, it makes people feel inferior and feel they are worthless without a massive freshly decorated house with all the latest gadgets etc. I'm sure it's that feeling that contributes to people spending outside their means and getting into debt.

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 26/11/2011 17:42

Agree Ponty.

JaneRustle · 26/11/2011 17:48

I agree about inducing overspending/feeling ought to be doing all that. Also disagree that make do and mend is properly represented by KA. But then sewing a patch inside the knee of a school trouser would make dull television, and my hair and lips are not as glossy as KA's. That quilt episode threw me into a rage. KA picked out some fabrics and then someone else made the quilt for her. I'd love to do that, of course, but it would cost me a few hundred quid.

ElderberrySyrup · 26/11/2011 17:51

It's about having a good presenter though isn't it - lots of perfectly boring bits of cooking were made cool and entertaining when tv chefs came along.
I don't see why craft should be any less televisual than cooking.
True, the jeans patching might not make a 30 minute episode in its own right but it could be a 2 minute spot in a longer show.

thomasbodley · 26/11/2011 18:02

I can't bear the monopolisation of television by a handful of women. Inexpert women, by and large.

Claudia Winkleman on both Strictly and Film 2011 is another example - she barely has sufficient knowledge or expertise to host either, never mind both.

Whereas Arlene was magnificent on SCD...so they rewarded her expertise and brilliance by getting rid of her. Should have cancelled my licence fee then and there.

How many Channel 4 programmes does the charmless, witless, clueless Kirstie host anyway?

Joanna Gosling's make do and mend book left me mystified. It's meant to be full of 'Eureka' tips to save money and time. These tips seem to consist of making your own play-doh and using baby wipes to clean your windows.

Well, let me see, the woman earns a quarter of a million a year. Her husband works for David Cameron (he replaced Andy Coulson).

Don't f*cking patronise us by expecting us to believe you clean your own windows when your household brings in half a million a year, love.

I'm want to rent Meadowgate next summer Grin

I fell out of love with Kirstie when she did yet another Location show with twats that had a million quid and were finding it SO hard to find a pad. Ffs!

ElderberrySyrup · 26/11/2011 18:14

Was Joanna Gosling the one where the webchat went horribly wrong? Did the thread get pulled?

theincredibequeenofwands · 26/11/2011 18:15

I could do with some more juice on Kirstie being vile and spoiled at Comic Relief's Celebrity Apprentice.

I've had a stressful day and am off to work in two hours.

A little bit of bitching might just pep me up.

Please.......??
