Boycotting restaurant in Croydon for charging for the presence of babies.

To boycott this restaurant over their new policy- breastfeeding mothers are to be charged 3.00 pounds just for the presence of their baby in the establishment.
Feel free to let them know how you feel if you also want to take a stand against such greedy and non children friendly policies.

Well any mother will be charged- however they feed their baby- but the point is babies that are not eating will still be charged- ludicrous......

Yes, that's ridiculous and offensive.

But as cherrysodalover has already pointed out, it has nothing to do with breastfeeding mothers. It has to do with mothers/fathers/caregivers of babies, period.

cherrysodalover · 25/11/2011 03:04

Yes- I was thrown by the reference to the breastfeeding mother in the article- it is any baby that you are feeding yourself, because they take up room in the restaurant.
I have e mailed my complaint in- will never go to this place now.

cherrysodalover is the OP. Grin

Ridiculous charge. Would boycott if in Croydon. Or the UK, even.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/11/2011 04:28

Consider them pre-boycotted. I moved out of Croydon years ago. If I take DH and DD back there, will not be eating at Cosmo!

dancingmustard · 25/11/2011 04:33

Shocking policy and surely should be illegal .

:)

CogitoErgoSometimes · 25/11/2011 05:56

YANBU. But presumably if everyone with children boycotts the place, that's precisely the effect they wanted in the first place. A child-free atmosphere. I'm sure other diners will love it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 25/11/2011 05:58

Yep, they'll more than make up their takings from people who would like a baby-free atmosphere. I think there's a demand for that, not that the babies are at fault, but some of the parents most definitely are.

AlpinePony · 25/11/2011 06:02

Yabu.

I would imagine it has far more to do with hordes or mums sitting around for 4 hours and buying one coffee whilst offering a never-ending picnic to their offspring.

It's not a church hall.

AlpinePony · 25/11/2011 06:02

Boycott whomever you like though, nobody cares.

LoveBeingAFirework · 25/11/2011 06:40

I completely agree it is wrong but

I will never go to this place now.

How likely was it that you would go there?

RustyBear · 25/11/2011 06:49

Before you all start firing off emails, did you actually read the last paragraph? They have apologised for the mistake and said it's not their policy to charge babies at all, only toddlers who eat, which is fair enough.

Whatmeworry · 25/11/2011 06:59

A baby free restaurant! Where is it? I wish the local Cafe Nero would do this, the buggy brigade infest it.

shagmundfreud · 25/11/2011 07:10

It's a horrible place anyway - one of these 'eat all you can' giant buffets.

As for mums sitting over a coffee for hours taking up space - they can't. They move every diner on after an hour and a half.

BTW - I'm in Croydon and my dd is always begging me to take her to Cosmos. Lots of kids love it there. They've totally shot themselves in the foot with this one.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 25/11/2011 07:11

Nice to see the usual fuckwittery in the comments.

shagmundfreud · 25/11/2011 07:12

Oh hang on. Just read last paragraph. Duh! Blush

Still won't be going to Cosmo's though. It's horrible!

Sirzy · 25/11/2011 07:16

So let me get this straight. It's an eat all you like place who wants to charge for toddlers who eat? Hardly a shocking development is it?

Silverstar2 · 25/11/2011 07:27

I heard this reported somewhere yesterday (not in the DM) and as I understood it it is to do with pushchairs, more than babies. And NOTHING to do wtih breatfeeding .

They said they were fed up of mothers and their huuuge pushcahirs taking up room - the room that another paying customer could use, then factor in the space a highchair takes,....... they were losing custom, as only half the cafe was full, of all these pushchairs, but the occupants of the pushchairs weren't paying.

Fair rnough, I say, they have a point and can do what they want. If you don't like it just go somewhre else .

My DC are now 7 and 9, and I would LOVE to go somethere child free! I Also remember being asked by a cafe owner to fold up my pushchair as it took up too much room. Fair enough.

But please don't turn it into a breatfeeding in public debate.

This is exactly the issue in the local Cafe Nero, andvthey tend to stay far longer than other customers.

MenopausalHaze · 25/11/2011 07:48

This subject has been done before - back in the summer. That thread led me straight to the restaurant concerned Grin and it was marvellous! Everywhere does not have to be taken over by huge buggies and screaming kids you know!

slavetofilofax · 25/11/2011 07:48

When Costa does the same thing, I will be happy.

pigletmania · 25/11/2011 07:49

That is Shock and disgusting. I don't live near Croyden and not likely to go there but I support the boycott.

pigletmania · 25/11/2011 07:52

Erm Alpine do you have children? You sound totally clueless tbh. You try staying at a coffee shop/restaurant for 4 hours with a baby/young child. I don't think so, could never go out for a leisurly coffee with dd, half an hour max and I would be necking it down wanting to return to the sanctury of home.

Sirzy · 25/11/2011 08:03

Piglet. If you read the article it clearly states the employee was in the wrong and that isn't their policy at all, they charge for toddlers who are eating there food which is more than fair enough.

Really it's a non story. Employee wrong, company apologises is hardly newsworthy it happens daily!
