to start an (albeit slightly different to usual) disabled toilets thread?

Can anyone use the baby change in the disabled toilet or is it for people with disabilities to change their children?
I've always just thought it was for anyone but have recently noticed that the tables are low and am now wondering whether that is to make it easier if you use a wheelchair.
I have no disabilties so wouldn't dream of using the disabled toilet myself but is it OK to change a baby in there?

Understood Kladdkaka but a non-disabled person in really serious pain may have no choice.

Andrewofgg · 25/11/2011 13:32

coraltoes You may be tempting the cat-haters there . . .

Serenitysutton · 25/11/2011 13:59

disabled loos are not exclusively for the use of wheelchair users. They are simply accessable toilets. Unless they're locked and the busienss owners only want to unlock them for wheelchair users, which is of course up to them.

what a load of hoopola over nothing.

I used to use the disabled toilets when I had a double buggy. Half the time it wouldn't fit in the main door to the ladies never mind the cubicle.
The buggy was small enough to fit inside my front door so I have no idea why it never fitted through the main door of our local public toilets. Confused

Kladdkaka · 25/11/2011 14:06

Andrew I was referring to the general idea that they are there for everyone equality and disabled people should wait their turn just like everyone else. I'd like to think that individual cases people apply a bit of adult reasoning and common sense.

Andrewofgg · 25/11/2011 14:13

Kladd I'd like to think so too, and the people on this forum mostly would. Not sure about the rest of our species . . .

I doubt if I have used the disabled loo three times since such things were first provided and never without a thundering good reason. But then I think you "cyber-know" me by now!

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 25/11/2011 14:20

Kladdkaka - I think that disabled people should be given priority for the disabled toilet and shouldn't have to queue. But that doesn't mean that other people who need the space of a disabled toilet shouldn't use them as long as there are no disabled people waiting.

Well you all know the real problem? You're not using the luxury facility that John Lewis offers.

They have:
Room for changing up to 6 babies at once.
A sink
Liners for the baby change mats that are supplied.
A "family toilet". It has a grown ups toilet and a small person's toilet and 2 different height sinks and hand dryers. There are also a row of bottle/food warmers. 2 separate areas for feeding and water dispensers.
It's always clean and nice smelling too.

This covers all bases and is why we go down one lift in the shopping centre and up in the John Lewis lift as it's so much more pleasant than the "public" ones which are always dirty and smelly, and the dedicated baby change room always has dirty nappies left lying around.

Katiepoes · 25/11/2011 14:25

The Ikea near me have that too. Their family loo is nicer than my living room.

trixie123 · 25/11/2011 16:02

haven't read the whole thread but is there still room in the cage? Seems obvious to me that if there are changing facilities in there and there isn't anyone waiting and you are going to be a couple of minutes to change a nappy then it makes far more sense than trying to negotiate the double doors and cubicles of normal ladies' loos

Sparklingbrook · 25/11/2011 16:12

I think you may all be able to come out of the cage soon. It doesn't look like the flamer is coming does it? Or they are waiting for you to come out?! Grin

MotherPanda · 25/11/2011 16:18

Glad I'm not the only one in the cage. It's nice and snuggle in here.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 25/11/2011 17:32

Will you cover me if I make a run for it sparkling?

Sparklingbrook · 25/11/2011 17:37

Yep ATruth no problem. I am still here. Are you running off for a wee in the disabled loo?

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 25/11/2011 18:31

Nah, i thought I'd flounce off to another thread. Bit dull round here. No flaming. No arguing. Just a load of people agreeing. Pah!

Sparklingbrook · 25/11/2011 18:33

There's a bumsex thread not long started. ATruth. Grin
