in case you're wondering... I wanted to change my babies nappies & feed them. When I knocked on the door your henchwoman opened it a crack then shut it in my face. A staff member also knocked on the door and through the doorcrack the henchwoman said 'she's feeding' and shut the door again.
I understand you might be a bit shy but come on... There's room in there for one to feed & one to change nappies you didn't need to be so secretive.
You were there for at least FM mins from what we could see. Do you not think it's a leetle bit selfish?
Or is it me being unreasonable expecting to be able to share a facility such as this?

Ah, X-posted!

Lynette - the baby change at our local tesco has more than one changing station but also has a lock on the door.

As I discovered when I went to change my DD's nappy, only to find it locked, upon which I exclaimed "for fuck's sake" (no one else around) only for it to be opened by a sheepish looking woman who'd decided to lock everyone out of the changing room while she breastfed.

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 24/11/2011 18:43

I think people may be overestimating the size of this room. It's essentially a side for changing a baby and a chair shoved in a corner. About the size of a disabled loo cubicle. It's really not meant for more than one at a time, which is why after our first change of an explosive nappy we never used it again.

preciousmuch · 24/11/2011 18:47

thanks to all you lovely westcountry types for changing room recommendations. Never used cafe nero but the boots one is fabby, will definitely use the curtains in future for the Wizard of Oz effect.
Mothercare is pretty Grotty but at least it's a good size.
We'd been shopping at m&s and used the cafe so the changing room was a natural progression.
I do remember being very self conscious when I first b/fed & the more I think about it maybe I am being U because she could have had sore mastitis boobs or pnd or anything really. Now I feel bad.
Sorry lady feeding in m&s exeter. YWNBU after all.

Though (and I clearly have way too much time on my hands to put this much thought into getting my norks out in M and S) I would write a letter to the branch. If nothing else, the staff member should have told you where the other change sation was. Also, ime, M and S cafe is one of the best places to feed in the city. There was a lovely woman in there when ds was a few days old, I think she still works there, who couldn;t have madfe it easier for me. She carried everything to my table and told me how lovely it was seeing him have a quiet feed. But I don't have feeding issues, I can get my boobs out to feed and noone is any the wiser generally. They should have been more helpful, but I'm not sure it was the woman in the room's fault.

I agree with ohtheconfusion
Teens if you'd asked me not to change my baby while yours was feeding, I'd tell you eff off you cheeky mare! You don't own the fedding and changing room! If you're that bothered, stay in!

pictish · 24/11/2011 18:51

feeding not fedding - gah!

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 24/11/2011 18:51

Again pictish, I think the size of this room is relevant. No problem with nappies being changed in the others in town if I were feeding. This room is essentially a tiny, windowless cupboard. Not nice.

pictish · 24/11/2011 18:52

mmm...maybe...

preciousmuch · 24/11/2011 18:57

fuckityfuckfuckfuck I will write to m&S because there was no notice advising of the other facility & the staff member obviously wasn't aware.
I have never actually seen inside the m&S baby room because its always been in use , it just rankled more today as I'd put in more time than I usually would.
Oh and I can make my double buggy fit anywhere & if not i'll improvise.
I'm not really bothered where I feed either, it was just a convenient location & meant toddler could get out whilst I dealt with baby & I didn't have to worry about toddler escaping or creating too much mischief.

Isn't it ther law that restaurants/cafes have to have toilets separate from eating areas? The wash rooms have to have a door to a lobby and then a door to the toilet area. If that is correct then it is certainly incorrect to have baby toilet facilities and feeding facilities in the same room. Are you reading this Marks and Spaner, British Home Stores, John Lewis, Debenhams, House of Fraser, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Morrison's, Tesco, the rest ........?

BringHimHome · 24/11/2011 19:09

Marks and Spencer

pommedechocolat · 24/11/2011 19:10

Just have a good changing mat in your bag and do it on the floor.

BaffledMum467941 · 24/11/2011 19:14

Well done for changing your mind :)
I love it when people do that - it restores my faith in MN!

For anyone interested, there are rather smashing changing facilities in Exeter, in St Catherines Square (the bit behind Dingles with the ruined almshouses). If you stand with your back to the almshouses, the facilities are in the first building to the right of the cafe in the 'plaza'. You go through the doors On the corner and press an intercom button, and a voice tells you to go in. V mysterious... It's a combined changing and disabled persons loo, with acres of space.

And now I have imparted my arcane knowledge I will, regrettably, have to kill you all.

BettyBum · 24/11/2011 19:35

Really laughing at "Sorry lady feeding in m&s exeter. YWNBU after all. "

Grin
preciousmuch · 24/11/2011 20:19

glad I made somebody laugh with my irrational rage & fickle backtracking.
Pending my DH has told me about the hallowed st catherine's changing room and I forget every.single.time I come into exeter. I promise that if I use it I will keep it tidy and not make you feel uncomfortable by scrutinizing you while you are discreetly feeding your child.

If I needed to change nappy would do so in toilets, not so hard on buggy or floor... would not have wasted my time waiting.

Re: feeding, I would have thought a cafe much nicer than a pokey room.

elinorbellowed · 24/11/2011 20:52

I was directed to the baby feeding area in the British Museum. It was a tiny wooden seat opposite male and female toilets. If I'd sat there my feet would have been trodden on by every visitor to the loo.
I found a pillar and sat on the floor to feed. Marble floors are cold.

GloriaTheHighlyFlavouredLady · 24/11/2011 21:04

Friend of mine was told to stop feeding in the British museum a couple of years ago. She made a hellova complaint. Nice to see they've changed even if provision is unsuitable.

Ismeyes · 24/11/2011 21:46

Glad to see you have changed your mind too.

FWIW I also highly recommend the facilities Pending mentioned. There is also another 'secret' baby change tucked behind the perfume shop as you head towards the back entrance of M&S, almost opposite The Works. You also have to speak into a mysterious intercom for that one.
