nope they are baby oranges, always have been and always will be

picnicbasketcase · 24/11/2011 19:52

Satsumas are easy to peel and separate into segments and share around the room.

Clementines are hard little fuckers that won't peel, are covered in pith when you do peel them, and squirt jets of acid into your eyes when separated.

Tangerines don't exist. You're a tool of the Citrus Marketing Board.

earlyriser · 24/11/2011 19:57

So by that logic, am i right in thinking that tangerine is the generic term for all small bodied orange type fruit (excepting kumquats) ?

picnicbasketcase · 24/11/2011 20:00

The group name for all of the above is Small/Baby Oranges.

happenstance · 25/11/2011 08:47

No No No never compare a Satsuma to a clementine, satsumas are juicy and yum and clementines are awful, manderins are nice though and while we are on the subject whatever happened to manderin jelly that used to be my favorite flavour, now its tangerine and its not the same Angry

mycatsaysach · 25/11/2011 14:09

tangeloes?

Scholes34 · 25/11/2011 14:11

PicnicBasket has it. Satsumas are the best. Why eat anything else? Nothing posh about them, just the right choice.

Get0rf · 25/11/2011 14:14

I call all small oranges satsumas. Clementines are Churchill's wife and tangerines are the ones with paper thin skin which you can't peel. I love a baggy satsuma.

At least they are not navel oranges, which look like baboon's arses and feel slightly undecent.

Gonzo33 · 25/11/2011 14:14

"Pips might = posh in the military but in fruity terms they are social death"

Ha ha ha ha ha, Pips are only posh in the military when on a rank slide!

I always say satsuma's, and I am far from posh.

mycatsaysach · 25/11/2011 14:15

oh but navels taste luverly

smartyparts · 29/11/2011 16:58

You never see tangerines - why do so many people call satsumas & clementines tangerines. I often moan about this.

I have eaten 4 clementines today. Yesterday I had 6.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 29/11/2011 17:40

the bigger the orange the better, when I was a kid I remember HUGE navel oranges that were easy to peel and tasted lovely, they just do not seem to be the same these days, and no where near as big.. shame.

GrimmaTheNome · 29/11/2011 18:07

At the weekend DH suddenly had a yen for Big Oranges - and luckily for him it is Navel season. They're as big as any I can remember, and while they would peel easily he prefers them just cut up. DD aquired the taste too, and having demolished the six we bought on Saturday we had to make a special trip to ASDA to get more (this is a girl who hates shopping as a rule).

Serenitysutton · 29/11/2011 18:14

Pmsl. I call them whatever they are. Granted you can't always tell but you can check the bag.

Best thing about winter is clementines (satsumas, less so, but still on the thumbs up list)

squeakytoy · 29/11/2011 18:17

They were all tangerines when I was growing up too.

The only time you got mandarins was in a tin.
