Mackerel- I like your style! Grin

crazygracieuk · 24/11/2011 16:14

Where does the word satsuma come from? I thought it was Japanese (as in the place called Satusuma) but in Japan a satsuma is known as a mikan.

GleamingHeelsSparklyPartyDress · 24/11/2011 16:14

Mackerel has the answer!

GrimmaTheNome · 24/11/2011 16:14

Clementine sounds posher to me than satsuma, except in the context of miner's daughters.

Mandarins are the poshest, they are the Sir Humphreys of the small citrus world.

SeeLyon · 24/11/2011 16:15

mackerel - ill see to YOU later

Satsumas are lovely, the others are not.

PinotHolidaysAreComing · 24/11/2011 16:20

You could not be more wrong.

Satsumas are the Aldi of the citrus fruit world.

Tangerine is the Sainsbo's.

Clementine is the Waitrose.

That's why posh blonde kids in St Johns Wood are called Clementine innit.

Goodynuff · 24/11/2011 16:22

I had never heard of satsumas before MN Grin I though you guys were just saying it instead of oranges!
Over here we have clementines, mandarins, and tangerines. Clems are small, and peel in one piece, mandarins are small, not as sweet, and peel in about 4 pieces, and tangerines are larger, and tend to be more fiberous.
Mandarins come on sale, a box of about 30 is 4$, so they are the ones most people buy Smile

valiumredhead · 24/11/2011 16:23

Bollocks!
Satsumas are lovely, clementines are hard to peel and pippy!

mycatsaysach · 24/11/2011 16:32

hmmmmmmmm i agree with valium

where does the japanese connection come from though?

i still say nothing, NOTHING beats a big orange

GrimmaTheNome · 24/11/2011 16:35

where does the japanese connection come from though?

satsumas were first imported from the Japanese province of Satsuma

mycatsaysach · 24/11/2011 16:39

thank you grimma

MackerelOfFact · 24/11/2011 16:40

PMSL. I made up the ginger, clementine and star anise thing off the top of my head as it sounded poncetastic and Waitrosey. Just stuck that combo into Google to see if it even existed and look! First result! Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 24/11/2011 16:47

Grin You could start a thread - people have to invent a dish, say where they think it would be from and then google?

JulesJules · 24/11/2011 16:51

Clementines are posher, I think. You can buy them in a little box with the leaves stuck on by child workers still on.

When I was little you could only get satsumas. This was in Surrey, though, perhaps they didn't let the non posh citrus over the border.

RogerMelly · 24/11/2011 16:55

you can only call it a satsuma if it is a variety of satsuma surely? otherwise if you start calling an orange a satsuma you will look like a dick. Same with calling a clementine a satsuma, people know the difference and you wont look very posh if you get the variety of citrus wrong to someone who knows the diffference

pooka · 24/11/2011 16:57

A satsuma is a satsuma and a clementine is a clementine surely?

PerUnaBomber · 24/11/2011 16:57

They're all baby oranges in this house. We have a non-denominational approach to citrus categorisation.

SardineQueen · 24/11/2011 16:58

I don't know about posher, satsumas are best though as they are easy to peel and very sweet.

For some reason I associate difficult to peel orange-type fruits are being posher, now I come to think of it Hmm

RogerMelly · 24/11/2011 17:02

I could never call them baby oranges, the children would make an excuse not to eat them because they are babies

earlyriser · 24/11/2011 17:34

They were all Tangerines when i was growing up.

earlyriser · 24/11/2011 17:35

And mandarins were those slimy orange things that came in tins Grin

SeeLyon · 24/11/2011 17:46

agree Tangerines have a marvellous 3 day week vibe to themselves - all nylon and bay city rollers

northernwreck · 24/11/2011 19:06

Clementines are posher. Kumquats are just dirty.

SardineQueen · 24/11/2011 19:19

Gawd Kumquat does sound dirty now you come to mention it Shock
