Because it's way more than just teachers, and I want to get some idea of just how disrupted things could get.

So:

Teachers
UK Border staff

Who else to add?

Avantia · 24/11/2011 08:39

So a 'duvet day' for rest of us next Wednesday then ! Grin

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 24/11/2011 08:42

The FDA is striking are which represents senior civil servants and professionals across all govt departments.

DressDownFriday · 24/11/2011 08:42

Police Support Staff (Police Officers, who cannot strike, are being drafted in to answer the 999 calls)

Police Support Staff (Police Officers, who cannot strike, are being drafted in to answer the 999 calls)

That's what's happening in our force ....that'll be police officers with very little control room experience, on a day where there's likely to be even more disruption due to strike action and pickets...could be interesting!

dizzyblonde · 24/11/2011 09:45

I'm in the ambulance service and in Unison and as no-one has bothered to tell me what might be happening I will be going into work as normal.
I find the use of terms such as 'scab' really offensive and picket lines are leaglised bullying as far as I am concerned.

2BoysTooLoud · 24/11/2011 09:53

I used to work in a hospital many moons ago - no way would I be part of leaving a ward unstaffed.

shesparkles · 24/11/2011 10:13

dizzyblonde-I hear ya and concur!

UndercoverCurator · 24/11/2011 10:21

ShirleyKnot · 24/11/2011 10:33

The radiographers are striking? Shock

WelshMoth · 24/11/2011 10:36

Not critical, but I know that our local council run swimming pool and leisure centre are closed too.

Cherrypi · 24/11/2011 10:37

Are midwives striking? I'm due in next few weeks.

notcitrus · 24/11/2011 10:38

Most people in central Government departments - the FDA (senior civil servants), PCS, Unison, and Prospect are all out I think, so that's going to be the vast majority of employees. Ditto local councils - don't try phoning them!

As my union have never been on strike before I've had to cross picket lines to get to work about a dozen times and never had any aggro whatsoever - never more than a question about whether I'm in one of the striking unions (no) or asked to take a leaflet. Non-civil-servant picket lines may be less civil, I suppose.

WhoIsThatMaskedWoman · 24/11/2011 10:41

I'm trying to work out what to do with the kids that day - I'm guessing the museums will be out and probably the libraries, but the local leisure centre has been outsourced so will probably be open?

What about transport - I guess their pensions aren't linked to the same system so they'll be working? Is that right?

DD's teacher went to some lengths to point out to her class that she personally voted not to strike but had been outvoted, which I think is a) Hmm because slagging her colleagues off by implication and b) not a good way to make yourself popular with a class of ten year olds.

blondie80 · 24/11/2011 10:41

All trains and buses in NI.

My boss is thinking of closing the office for the day...fingers crossed.

slavetofilofax · 24/11/2011 10:41

My friend who is a radiographer is definately striking, and she says teh majority of her colleagues will be too.

But I rang a different hospital earlier to see if the treatment my dh has an appointment for is likely to be affected, and the lady said that it would be very unlikley to be affected as it will be being done by a doctor. I'm very thankful that it hopefully won't be cancelled.

blondie80 · 24/11/2011 10:42

I mean all trains and buses in NI are off.

muffinino82 · 24/11/2011 10:46

It's not just UK Border Agency immigration officers who are striking, it's all staff who are employees of the agency and part of the balloted union (such as I).

LaurenLaverne · 24/11/2011 10:48

Hospital Laboratory staff will be striking too as most of them are in Unite. They will be providing emergency services though.

SusanneLinder · 24/11/2011 11:50

dizzyblonde There' s nothing to tell re what's happening. Unless the government do a U turn before next Wednesday your union have called a strike, and therefore you should be withdrawing your labour on that day.

If you go into work on that day as a Union member, you are a strike breaker. If you don't want to strike then come out the union. You cannot choose the bits of union membership you like and the bits you don't.

shakes head in disbelief

EdithWeston · 24/11/2011 11:59

Wow, this list has grown!
