To consider buying a bottle of Advocaat?

Mrsrobertduvall · 23/11/2011 17:39

I have fond memories of having it as a teenager, as a snowball with a cherry.
I saw a bottle in the supermarket yesterday and am sorely tempted.
Am i going to be horribly disappointed ?

I am on my own with dd (15) this Christmas as dh and ds are off on holiday, so I will be having plenty of nice wine and bubbly as well.

Banana Flip - Advocaat, Banana Liqueur, Fanta. Sounds so wrong but tastes amazing.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/11/2011 22:52

I'm also off to buy a bottle - I remember having it in er.... 70's and 80's with parentals.

Thanksfor the 'recipe'.

BaronessBomburst · 23/11/2011 22:53

It's really good over vanilla ice-cream. Add some chocolate sauce, or dark chocolate curls as well. Or serve in tiny glasses, with squirty cream on top, to be eaten with a spoon - as a deluxe liqueur with your after-dinner coffee.

I live in Holland so I know these things.

Mrsrobertduvall · 25/11/2011 20:03

I have bought my bottle.
Will let you know how I get on [ smile]

How is it going MrsDuvall? Is it all you remembered it to be and more? Please say you put cherries in it!

cupofteaplease · 25/11/2011 21:47

I saw a cookery program where the chef sliced some apples and fried them in advocaat. He served them with cinnamon pancakes and vanilla ice cream. I've never had advocaat but that recipe looked pretty yummy!

I might buy some Aldi own brand and give it a go...

I LOVE SNOWBALLS Grin

Tip : Don't add to much lime cordial, just a teeny splash !

And give it a good stir !

It's a brilliant Christmas drink. I always have one when I have wrapped all the presents. It doesn't matter that it's usually in a pint glass does it ?

MrsChristmasDB · 25/11/2011 21:52

*too.

Drunk at the thought of it. Grin

I am loving the idea of a Banana Flip, I must give that a try.

Catsmamma · 25/11/2011 21:54

does anyone know if it would go in coffee?? Simply cannot believe I have not done this before!

...because someone already mentioned baileys, and I had a little light bulb flash moment

AND it's essentially the same as eggnog?? SOOOOOOOOOOOOo I am thinking home made Eggnog Lattes

...I'd go try it right now, but am packed to the gunnells with fish and chips and coffee, and feeling a little queasy.

ujjayi · 25/11/2011 22:00

How funny.....I saw Nigella on the Food Network this afternoon making snowballs :)

I now have a hankering for babycham or a Cinzano Bianco :o. 1987 was a very good year for teen drinking Chez Ujjayi.

loserface · 25/11/2011 22:03

My Grandma had 2 glasses of it at christmas and got wrecked! Kept mixing up her words and saying she'd had too much "avocado", funniest thing I've ever seen!

Catsmamma · 26/11/2011 11:58

Lookit!! Lookit!!!

Experimentation will commence this even chez Catsmamma, and I shall report back if able. :o

Dillydollydaydream · 26/11/2011 13:13

Really want a snowball now. Not had one in about 10years!
My mum always used to buy advocaat over Christmas but since leaving home it's not something I tend to buy. I used to love those cocktail cherries, mmmm :)

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 26/11/2011 13:55

oooh yes its now on my list and cherry B thanks whoever posted this I used to love it in cider. christmas is going to be very very merry this year. Grin

Selks · 26/11/2011 14:04

Intriguing! They sound quite nice....but are they slimy? And is the lime the cordial type or fresh lime?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 26/11/2011 14:05

Is this the bright yellow stuff that tastes like egg juice?

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 26/11/2011 15:18

not slimy no once diluted with lemonade, slightly thick a bit like a milshake cosistency, not at all 'eggy' really despite being called egg nog

kreecherlivesupstairs · 26/11/2011 15:32

Delish with or without lemonade.
DH is returning with six litres of it in kilner jars from Belgium.
It is absolutely delish and not at all like egg juice. I don't eat eggs but will happily eat the advocat.
When DD and I first went to Belgium, we went out for breakfast. I had coffee and the waitress brought what I thought was a glass of custard to go with mine.
It pulls your pants up at 8am.

Catsmamma · 26/11/2011 15:36

Respeck!

8 am! :o

I am itching to make one of those bombadino things, but promised dd I would wait till she was home!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 26/11/2011 15:48

I is nails. HOnestly.

Mrsrobertduvall · 27/11/2011 21:04

CroissantNeuf · 27/11/2011 21:10

I just mentioned this thread to DP and he's disappeared off to investigate the depths of the booze cupboard to see if we have any left. Grin

poorbuthappy · 27/11/2011 21:12

Christmas in a glass.
Crushed ice, fresh lime, lemonade. Lovely.
