To consider buying a bottle of Advocaat?

I have fond memories of having it as a teenager, as a snowball with a cherry.
I saw a bottle in the supermarket yesterday and am sorely tempted.
Am i going to be horribly disappointed ?

I am on my own with dd (15) this Christmas as dh and ds are off on holiday, so I will be having plenty of nice wine and bubbly as well.

This is the best advokaat in the world, ever: deklok

If you are going to a Christmas market in Flanders, snap some up. It's like electric custard and you have to eat it with a spoon. They also do wonderful chocolates.

BadTasteFlump · 23/11/2011 19:33

'electric custard'? Confused

GerardWay · 23/11/2011 19:36

Laurie a snowball is advokaat and lemonade. Put the advokaat in a tall glass and then slowly add the lemonade. Put a cherry or two on a cocktail stick and enjoy. Grin

pointydog · 23/11/2011 19:38

Tell you what, you get advocaat, I'll get campari.

During a long winter, it gets to the stage where anyone'll drink anything. No loss.

RachelHRD · 23/11/2011 19:41

ooh I love advocaat....

LaurieFairyCake you can get snowballs ready mixed from Sainsbo's if you want to try before getting a whole bottle!

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 23/11/2011 19:42

We get our Advocaat in Aldi now (it's much cheaper than Warnicks and tastes exactly the same) and the DCs are allowed a Snowball on Christmas Day, one on Boxing Day, and one on New Years Day. I make them so there is very little actual advocaat in there Grin but they get a cherry on a stick and a little umbrella and we have "The Snowball Glasses" that only come out at Christmas time and it's all good fun. I actually like advocaat mixed half and half with coke (in a pint glass Blush ) and stirred well. It goes a sort of murky greeny yellowy colour, tastes like milkshake, and is lovely and rather potent and I always drink it at my parent's house on Christmas Day and it saves me fighting with DSis Grin
Our snowball "recipe" is advocaat, a dash of lime juice, lemonade, and a cherry on a stick.

PastGrace · 23/11/2011 19:58

what's advocaat?

ENormaSnob · 23/11/2011 20:04

Yadnbu

I love snowballs.

MooMinCow · 23/11/2011 20:04

Am intrigued. Have seen the bottle in our local Aldi, and always wondered what it tastes like. What else can you do it with? And doesn't it curdle if you add lemonade (or does that only happen with Baileys type liqueur?)

beatenbyayellowteacup · 23/11/2011 20:05

Now I want some advocaat too!

Never heard of a snowball but my dutch grandmother used to have it with cream in a wide champagne glass. Love those memories Smile

Heleninahandcart · 23/11/2011 20:08

Babycham

Advocaat

and a nice bottle of warm Blue Nun with dinner Grin

bettybattleaxe · 23/11/2011 20:11

Advocaat is something we had to buy when they stopped making (Benedicts?) Egg Flip.

I might try the Aldi one.

PlumpDogPillionaire · 23/11/2011 20:12

Totally with you on Advocaat poured on pies (sweet ones obviously) and puddings, Bewitched. It's beyond delicious sloshed over rich choclate cake, too.

Might try making Advocaat icecream this year, actually. Mmmmmmmmm

Bellavita · 23/11/2011 20:14

I bought a bottle last week! Grin my parents came to lunch on Sunday, my mum loves snowballs! I also had one Grin

Mmmmmm

Portofino · 23/11/2011 20:16

oh yes - I introduced my dcs to it at a very early age when they were in their late teens and so old enough to begin to taste alcohol. Must get a bottle or three oh and Campari, haven't had that for years - don't think of it as christmassy though, not like Advocaat ... what else did we used to drink... oh I remember - Cinzano! it came in Red and White... yum Grin

Nigella recommends it for over Christmas pud ....

Grin I love Nigella - she's like a caricature of herself, but I love her!

Whateveryousaymustberight · 23/11/2011 21:32

Advocate and ginger beer makes a good snowball too.

Whateveryousaymustberight · 23/11/2011 21:33

Not advocate. Obviously. Dammit spellchecker.

startail · 23/11/2011 21:35

Default present for my mum when all inspiration fails.

MindtheGappp · 23/11/2011 21:38

I think about this every year, but simply do not want a 1L bottle. If I could find a 50ml bottle, I'd be tempted.

Mrsrobertduvall · 23/11/2011 21:39

Wow, I go out to a Christmas shopping evening and come back to all these replies!

I will definitely go and get a bottle then!
