Worst children's film ever.

Taking the children to see all and sundry, along with her ne'er do well mate with the funny accent.

Look into Julie Andrews eyes and see the axis of evil.

Fly a kite off.

not read all of it but i think its an amazing film for kids.

I love the part where Mrs Banks is fighting for womens rights and she tells the cleaner to hide her banner as "you know Mr Banks does not like the corze"

Francagoestohollywood · 22/11/2011 12:57

I like both the book and the movie.

On the other hand, SOM is annoying, like many other musicals.

WinterIsComing · 22/11/2011 13:00

Freudian was it this book?

Grin at Stephen King - so true. The ninety-foot baby with iron teeth in particular. Loved them though.

peeriebear · 22/11/2011 13:01

I adore Mary Poppins and sometimes watch it when the kids are at school :) It's one of my 'comfort blanket' films, like The Wizard of Oz and Labyrinth. And Cry Baby, which is just brilliant.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 22/11/2011 13:06

anyone old enough to remember that strange programme on childrens TV something like 'ringing tree' it was very sinister with no words only music, dwarves, and sometimes black and white opening into colour by a lake... can't remember all of it but it used to be very randomly weird.

mrsmplus3 · 22/11/2011 13:09

you women are awful!! (but hilarious)

i love Mary Poppins! i watched it all the time as a child and cant wait to watch it with my little girl.

peeriebear - i love wizard of oz and labyrinth too.

but my all time favourite? Annie.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 22/11/2011 13:13

I went into labour with Ds2 on an easter monday while DS1 and DH were watching Mary Poppins, remember sitting on a towel after a bath wishing it would end so I could get DS1 to bed and call the MW.

jackstarb · 22/11/2011 13:27

I watched Mary Poppins a couple of weeks ago with my dc's and was struck by how relevant it is to current events.

It covers the role of banks in society. Parenting and what makes a good parent. The role of women and the status of men. Plus it has St Paul's Cathedral.

I was also idly tapping through my IMDB ap. as I watched. Sadly a large percentage of the cast are dead, including the actor who plays Michael Sad.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 22/11/2011 13:29

You are not being unreasonable -

however,

I LOVE MARY POPPINS and cannot wait for Christmas so I can watch it (again).

The West End show was great too.

shouldnotbehere · 22/11/2011 13:38

oh, I feel sad that Michael is dead now. I never knew that.

hellsbells76 · 22/11/2011 13:43

somewherewest you've reminded me of a story I heard about a terrible theatre adaptation of the Diary of Anne Frank. Apparently it was so bad that early on, when the Nazis raid the house for the first time, someone in the audience shouted 'She's in the attic!' Grin

FreudianSlipper · 22/11/2011 14:19

WinterIsComing no it was not that book it was teh story of Baby Yaga a witch who ate children and her house was built on chicken legs

this is a picture from the book

very scary though my mum thought it was beautifully illustrated Hmm maybe but not how a seven year old thinks. my mum still has the book

bintofbohemia · 22/11/2011 14:29

Gosh, poor Michael was only 21 when he died of pancreatitis. I didn't even know he was dead!

bintofbohemia · 22/11/2011 14:31

Christ, didn't know David Tomlinson was dead either!

auntierozzi · 22/11/2011 14:33

She is SUPER CALA FRAGALISTIC EXPEE ALI DO SHUS. But I hate her because my DH shows off about his minimal tidying up by saying "Oh it must have been Mary Poppins!" Berk. Even the kids are fed up with this...

Insomnia11 · 22/11/2011 14:33

I don't know how you could find Mary Poppins sinister, unless you are a banker perhaps :) People are weird. Ok Julie Andrews is posh and schoolmarmish but hardly sinister. For God's sake don't watch any Tim Burton films if you find MP sinister...

It covers the role of banks in society. Parenting and what makes a good parent. The role of women and the status of men. Plus it has St Paul's Cathedral.

Exactly.

Insomnia11 · 22/11/2011 14:35

I guessed DT was dead because he was fairly mature in films in the 60s and 70s. A lovely man by all accounts.

Insomnia11 · 22/11/2011 14:38

Also Boomknobs and Breadsticks :) is lovely too.

shouldnotbehere · 22/11/2011 15:13

Yes, I looked Michael up, his death was not covered in the media at the time:

WinterIsComing · 22/11/2011 15:27

Baba Yaga and the house on chicken legs is in that book. Horrible Shock

ahhyesiseeyouvepooedonyourfoot · 22/11/2011 15:28

how sad should that there was so little recognition of his death! And mysterious, why on earth did his brother not attend his funeral??

ahhyesiseeyouvepooedonyourfoot · 22/11/2011 15:29

oh he was only 13...but still...

hocuspontas · 22/11/2011 16:49

Stepaway - I bought The Singing Ringing Tree and The Tinder Box on VHS a few years ago and they were still weird!

mathanxiety · 22/11/2011 16:50

Very sad about Matthew Garber. I loved those children. So natural and un-airbrushed.

I always thought Mary Poppins was about LSD.
I loved the character of Mrs Banks though.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was absolutely the creepiest and most disturbing children's film I ever saw. It was given as a gift for the DCs and I threw it out.

CheerfulYank · 22/11/2011 17:01

I didn't know he was dead! I was watching the commentary on the 40th Anniversary edition and the girl who played Jane was laughing about what a naughty little boy he was. They didn't mention that he'd died. :(
