To think Loreale need to the issues with their hair dye - warning to you all to do a skin test!

Just read this

My hairdresser uses Loreale and told me they had changed the ingredients recently. I have never been allergic to anything in my life and have dyed my hair several times but when he did a skin test (thank god he did) the skin went red and started peeling off in hours. He said a couple of other clients who had been fine with the dye before had a reaction in the last few months.

Since then I have been super sensitive to shampoo to the point I get red sores down my hairline and my scalp bleeds and is covered in flaky itchy skin (the skin test was 5 months ago).

Anyone else used this and had problems? I am going to write to Loreale but I thought this post might serve as a warning. Please do a 48 hour skin test!

I read today about the lady in the come Sad

So are you supposed to do a patch test (on your skin) or a strand test (on your hair)? My old hair dresser did strand tests but my new one doesn't.

Reading the information on here would suggest all permanent hair colour contains PPD, and also that PPD is banned in Europe. What do the Europeans use to cover their grey? Does anyone know please?

I didn't realise that PPD built up in the system over time. I don't dye my hair but am shocked that a product that has the potential to be dangerous to someone who's done a patch test previously (like the lady in the coma did) isn't even more clear on the packaging. I think most people do do a skin patch test ONCE, they then assume they are not allergic. If the product's ingredients change then I think a very clear warning should be made on the product packaging.

Cigarettes have enough warnings, they damage over time, so why don't hair care products that could damage over time have the same bold shouty warnings?

I'm allergic to all sorts of things but if I'd previously done a patch test and bought a product again, I wouldn't think it was necessary to do another.

PPD sounds bloody nasty!

Here is the petition if anyone wants to sign it.

If you google PPD free colour you can find a few. Henna works well and comes in different colours - still do a patch test though. The salon I have found near me uses Keune dye which is PPD free.

I think the whole thing is pretty disingenuous. Most people will not be bothered to do a patch test 48 hours before dyeing their hair at home. A lot more people will test themselves once and never do it again, and in any case doing a patch test which doesn't reveal irritation cannot guarantee you won't have a pretty nasty reaction when you've used all the product anyway.

They should stop using PPD in their products full stop, but you can get allergic to anything you use frequently.

Has anyone heard about the woman who is in a coma after using L'Oreal hair dye? I've just read about it.

I'm due to have my roots done at the haridresser this week and I'm a bit (actually a lot) scared. I should ask them if they use L'Oreal shouldn't I? I've never thought to ask what brand they use before.

AngryFeet · 24/11/2011 11:09

Doesn't matter what brand it is gottasmile. PPD is in all permanent dye. If you are worried ask for a patch test 48 hours before you have the dye done. You should be able to pop in and they will just stick a bit of dye behind your ear.

Just remember only 5% of people are allergic to this stuff so yuou should be fine but you MUST patch test 48 hours before every time. Ignore them saying once is enough it is not, you can become allergic to things or they can build up in your system over years until you get a reaction.

thanks angryfeet! I'm a bit worried that they'll think I'm over reacting, but going by how scared I'm feeling, I WILL do it. if i could only live with my greying hair..... I HATE the thought of all those chemicals.
I've signed the petition. un believable that they've taken it out in the rest of europe.

AngryFeet · 24/11/2011 11:23

Try looking around to see if anyone does PPD free dyes in your area. A local salon to me uses Keune which is PPD free so I will be going there in the future.

gottasmile · 24/11/2011 11:25

I definitely will. Thank you angryfeet. It's great that you've raised this awareness.
