to think that life is too short to iron bed sheets?

AIBU to think that frankly there are better, more important things to be doing and that in all honesty once they're on the bed you can hardly tell. Also teatowels for that matter (have a friend who does this). DM seems to think it is v important to ensure all items are ironed. Perhaps a generational thing?

Or am I being lazy?

Wouldnt boil washing bedding/dishcloths deal with that sort of thing Crabapple?

birdofthenorth · 20/11/2011 17:43

I haven't ironed in two years! DH does essentials & we occasionally use an "ironing lady" who charges a tenner a bag. But I hate it so much I'd rather hand over the money, at least that way it gets done!

Poppyandme · 20/11/2011 17:48

Every Saturday I take all the bedsheets/duvet covers etc to the local dry cleaners (they also fo laundry). Obviously I have a few sets so as I drop one set off I pick up the one I drpooed off the week before and work in a rotation. The shop is only a 2 minute driva away so no hassle and everything comes back lovely and ironed (especially all the fiddly appliqué bits which I hate ironing).

Poppyandme · 20/11/2011 17:49

Sorry for spelling, damn iPad.....

pink4ever · 20/11/2011 18:04

Hell NO!! I hate ironing with a passion but I hate looking scruffy more so I do iron clothes. I iron dh shirts for workAngry-even though I have pointed out to him its no longer the dark ages.

Tbh I have 2 friends who dont iron and without wanting to sound like a bitch-they do look a bit scruffy

Crabapple99 · 20/11/2011 18:06

No, Amberleaf, many pests can survive the washing machine, even on a hot wash. yes, boiling a dishcloth would be effective, but not many people boil bedclothes!

OldGreyWassailTest · 20/11/2011 18:06

Haven't ironed for 15 years. Use the tumble dryer and just fold. Simple.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 20/11/2011 18:09

Life is too short to iron anything. Ironing is a filthy habit and should be stamped out. I "Just Said NO" in 1988 and have never looked back

troisgarcons · 20/11/2011 18:11

This thread comes up every week.

Iron what needs ironing (shirts, trousers etc)

Do not ever iron tea towels, towels, bedlinen (unless you are having a mad moment and pillow cases are permissible) socks, pants... or bras, I have a friend who irons her bras Hmm

Just check your kids arent going out looking like scrumpled shitebags! Grin

thebigkahuna · 20/11/2011 18:14

YANBU.

THe first time I met my MIL she was ironing DH's bath towels.

Why??

ZillionChocolate · 20/11/2011 18:15

Ironed sheets are lovely. If you can't be arsed, then don't. Isn't it the same point as wearing make up everytime you go out? Do or don't, and allow everyone else the same choice.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 20/11/2011 18:21

The only time I have ever ironed bedding is during labour.
Its a sure sign its going to kick off when I try and get a king size duvet on the ironing board.

The odd pillow case needs ironing if I have been too lazy to fluff and fold. But I hate ironing and stuff doesnt look much better after I have had a crack at it anyway.

startwig1982 · 20/11/2011 18:25

I've given up ironing fitted sheets as I can't work out how to fold them neatly Grin
Otherwise I do tend to iron bedclothes and tea towels, as they take about 10 seconds and are easier than dh's shirts! Grin No to underwear though, unless it's still damp.

AllGoodNamesGone · 20/11/2011 18:45

I might iron them if I lived on my own but DH always makes such a mess of the bed just by looking at it that I'd end up feeling all resentfull and that I had completely wasted my time.

Plus I hate ironing and do the barest minimum.

LittleMissFlustered · 20/11/2011 18:49

I don't like the feel of ironed bed linen.

Yama · 20/11/2011 18:51

I don't think I've met anyone who irons bedsheets. Certainly, nobody has ever mentioned it in conversation.

Not generational. I have never seen my parents ironing anthing other than essentials.

marriedinwhite · 20/11/2011 18:54

Dont iron fitted sheets. Would iron flat sheets - the creases come out if you run a nice hot iron over the bed once the sheet is on it Grin. Do iron pillow cases and duvet covers. Have a nice silk counterpane over the bed though which hides a multitude of sins.

precariouslybalanced · 20/11/2011 18:56

My Mum puts her bed sheets / duvet covers on the ironing board then irons stuff that actually needs ironing on top of them, turning the bed sheets over the ironing board every couple of garments. That way she gets ironed bed sheets without ever getting frustrated at having to do so. Clever, huh?

zimm · 20/11/2011 18:58

Ironing is an excellent candidate to be made illegal in the fight against climate change Grin Grin Grin

Dawndonna · 20/11/2011 19:00

I take my iron upstairs and iron the sheet on the bed, no square bits, no fold lines, nada. Two minutes and feels nice.
Same with quilt covers, lay flat on bed, run iron over, done.

JeanieBueller · 20/11/2011 19:01

I absolutely revile ironing of any description. DP has tried to have a moan at me in the presence of his mother that I don't iron his work shirts. He seems to forget that before we had DS and I worked full time, he didn't iron his own shirts then, so clearly he doesn't really care that much about them being ironed and just because I am 'at home all day' doesn't mean I'm going to suddenly get the bloody ironing board out and start pressing. I once said to MIL when she was 'joking' about my lack of ironing that I would be more than happy to drop DP's shirts off with her and pick them up if she felt that strongly about it - she hasn't mentioned it since...

MIL and DM both iron sheets (though DM has now discovered IKEA waffle duvet covers and pillow cases that don't need ironing and seems to be having a sort of mid-life sheet-ironing-rejection epiphany) - my aunt irons socks and pants.

SardineJam · 20/11/2011 19:03

The only things that get ironed in this house, are the iron-in name labels for DS1's clothes

natashakaplinkyplop · 20/11/2011 19:07

I iron everything.

SnowDin · 20/11/2011 19:30

Does London have a particular bedbug problem which is not so bad in the rest of the country? Confused

AmberLeaf · 20/11/2011 19:45

Have never ironed bed sheets....am yet to have bedbugs.

Snowdin, Ive heard ont telly that bedbugs are on the increase but dont know anyone thats had them or they havent admitted it
