To "do" my hair every day?

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 20/11/2011 12:42

Because my friend thinks so...in fact she said "You can't be in a very relaxed relationship with your Dh if you feel you need to look your best ALL the time"

Hmm

I do my hair daily because it's like a large and luxurious hedge otherwise...it has to be tamed and "done" with hairspray etc or it looks awful and I feel like crap...it's not a coiffure or anything....it's just shoulder length with layers and I put it up or straighten it and have it down and it's certainly NOT "for" DH or anyone but myself. She thinks I do it to "impress" DH.

when I don't do it my mood seems to match the mass of mess on my head....anyway..my friend thought that she should point out to me that i am too concerned with looks and that I should go around with no makeup on and not do my hair for a few days....so that I can "be myself" more. AIBU to think that my hair is none of her business? Do you do your hair daily?

YANBU

And washing hair daily does not make it more greasy - it totally depends on your hair type. Fine hair needs washing more often - thicker or curly hair needs washing less often.

Kladdkaka · 20/11/2011 14:10

I do my hair everyday. I love doing hair, ever since I got a 'Girl's World' when I was 5. I do it even when I'm home alone and know nobody is going to see me at all.

AutumnFalls · 20/11/2011 14:18

I 'do' my hair every day (wash, mousse, dry) and I do my makeup every day even if I am home alone. Because it makes me FEEL more myself. I feel better if i have made an effort, but the whole regime takes 5-10 mins only. But if I have not done it, i feel very blah. I am not VERY attractive, quite ordinary looking and I just feel happier, more relaxed if I know I have made an effort for myself. It is as automatic as putting on knickers and a bra.

Ifancyashandy · 20/11/2011 14:27

Currently putting my face on as about to head into the town centre. Hair just been washed too. Blow drying will commence.

Same every day.

Daughteroflilith · 20/11/2011 14:28

YANBU. It depends on what you mean by "doing" your hair though. Is it ages fiddling around? I shower every day, which takes 10 minutes, during which I wash my hair. I use the lather from the hair as shower gel to then wash my body (don't know if that is a bit yuck), and it takes 5 minutes to blowdry. I always wear make up but it takes me about 10 minutes to apply (foundation, eyeliner, powder, mascara, lipstick). I wear this even if I'm staying in, and even if I'm not seeing anybody, because it makes me feel human. I take more care if I'm going out for the evening, or to an important meeting, obviously.

It's a way of expressing your personality, like wearing jewellery.

GiserableMitt · 20/11/2011 14:33

Not sure I agree with washing a maximum of 3 times a week.

I live in a hot climate plus I exercise and take part in activities that make me sweaty, especially in my hair. I'd be a grotty stinking mess if I only washed it 3 times a week.
I agree that frequent washing can make hair greasier sooner, but if that's a choice one chooses to have clean hair then so be it.

"I do my hair daily because it's like a large and luxurious hedge otherwise..."

Err... I do my hair so it looks like a large and luxurious hedge...

LeNameChange · 20/11/2011 14:50

I am LOVING the 'coiffure' link and want hair just like that. In fact, I might start getting up at 5am and doing it like that...

YANBU, I do my hair and make up every day and it's called 'feeling good for myself'.

HandMini · 20/11/2011 14:51

I am generally of the "feel much better with a splosh of make up and hair blow dried" camp, but since having a baby, things have definitely slipped. Yes, it feels good the few days that I manage to cobble together a nice outfit, a blowdried head and a slick of lipgloss, but I have really got over that "can't meet your eye if not fully dolled up" thinking. I am now also totally happy to stick hair in ponytail, wash face and go...and I'm really pleased about that, I was getting a bit too princessy I now realise.

carabos · 20/11/2011 14:55

I always mean to do my hair every day.....Wink

MissKittyEliza · 20/11/2011 15:06

I wash mine in the shower each morning. It dries naturally. If I didn't I'd feel a bit grubby.....no matter what I did with the rest of my appearance!

lottielou39 · 20/11/2011 15:16

Two Words: Dry Shampoo.
I have very fine, greasy hair and wouldn't leave the house without washing it every single day. But I discovered dry shampoo and it really works- and saves me shitloads of time. (but I still use the GHD's every day)

DoMeDon · 20/11/2011 15:17

YANBU - it is nothing to do with her. I wash and style my hair every day too- it is short, fine and feels greasy if left unwashed. I also wear make up nearly every day and try to look my best.

I remember an old freind of mine who was super slim, very attractive, always made up and hair done - the PA comments from other women were rife. It was jealousy, pure and simple. One woman even made out my friend must do nothing- job/housework/cooking- as she obviuosly spent all her time reapplying make up and exercising. So ridiculous - she worked pt, had an immaculate home, cooked from scratch every night, never went to gym and did make up once first thing before taking DC to school. She was just well organised, ate healthily and cared about her appearance.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 20/11/2011 15:31

Good god I would kill for a large and luxurious hedge full of hair! Mines all thin and lank, its really crap, i do it, the 'do' lasts a few hours only though, tis such crappy hair :(

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 20/11/2011 16:06

I sympathise babydubs but my do only lasts a while too...it gradualy rebels and then springs out everywhere again...it makes me look mad.

Yanbu. I don't do my hair every day but I'm incredibly lucky that once I have beaten it into submission with my straighteners it only needs a brush And a quick backcomb in the morning for the next couple of days until I wash it again. I do wear full makeup though, every single day even if I'm only going to the stables / school run. I don't do this for my dh and I don't do it for anyone else, I do it for myself, because I prefer the way my face
Looks with makeup.

pink4ever · 20/11/2011 16:26

I wouldnt dream of leaving the house without having done my hair or put on make-up. The thought actually makes me feel a bit queasy!

I have horrendous hair though-very thick, wavy and frizzy. I straighten it every day-if I am going out in public. If its down I usually use a bit of volumizing powder on the crown or tie it up messily.

Make up wise depends on seasons in summer its tinted moisturiser, bronzer, mascara and lipgloss.
Winter-foundation,powder,blusher,eye liner,mascara and lip gloss.

My dh does prefer me with make up but at least he is honest about itGrin

AnaisB · 20/11/2011 16:27

YANBU

I don't, but that's not relevant. I don't know why your friend cares. You do your hair everyday therefore you must have relationship problem?! Hmm

FoxyRoxy · 20/11/2011 16:36

I feel like a tramp if I don't do my hair every day. I go to bed with straight hair and wake up with a frizzy mess on my head!

No offence to any tramps that may be on MN and have nice hair.

thegirlwithnoname · 20/11/2011 16:40

Its none of your friends business. Next time she comments, tell her you don't do your hair and makeup for your husband, you do it incase you bump into her, then wink! (sorry thats in poor taste)

mumeeee · 20/11/2011 16:47

I don't wash my hair everyday because a hairdresser told me that wading your hair everyday is actually bad for it and it can end up getting more greasy.

LatersTaters · 20/11/2011 17:20

I thought 'doing' your hair was in the same league as getting dressed?

Not doing my hair is the equivalent of putting on flip flops with my jeans and DH's hoodie over my pj top to run to the corner shop for milk i.e. not dressed/ready to go anywhere.

She sounds a bit jealous?

TalkinPeace2 · 20/11/2011 17:25

don't "do" makeup
sleep with hair in a plait - have done since early teens
brush it up into a clip every morning
have recently added a dab of ellnette to keep it there
takes around 45 seconds to look smart enough for the school run (NOT Wetherby levels) :-)
