To Think Global Warming Can't Be All Bad?

afteralongsquawk · 19/11/2011 21:02

My carefully planted main crop tomatoes are long finished; but the runty little seedlings I dumped on the compost heap are doing great and still producing lovely toms in the last third of Nov!

AIBU to rather approve of this global warming thing? Confused

How is it possible that the public have absolutely NO trust in climate scientists?

I can't imagine....after all, they are models of keeping to one story, data scandals never occur, and they never reach for hyperbole and exaggeration or ignore inconveniant facts, do they?

"I can't imagine....after all, they are models of keeping to one story, data scandals never occur, and they never reach for hyperbole and exaggeration or ignore inconveniant facts, do they?"

Ermm no, actually they don't in the main.

batsintheroof · 20/11/2011 22:00

And I include Phil Jones as one of them. He was not found guilty of a data scandal. All the exaggeration came from the papers and global warming sceptics. His science was proved rigorous.

feirless · 20/11/2011 22:50

although we do need to stop polluting our environments so much for the sake of our quality of air/water, i don't believe in global climate change being because of pollution, we already had an ice age that wasn't caused by us...and the ice melting seems to be a bit too convenient for anyone interested in using the arctic to extract fossil fuels, wouldn't be suprised if it's been purposely melted by a government tbh and then blamed on us so we feel guilty enough to recycle more rare resources.

also, ty for replying Whatmeworry

Whatmeworry · 20/11/2011 23:04

The most important pressing global issue is a lack of fresh water I believe

That and energy - but its not a lack of fresh water due to global warming or climate failure or whatever, the planet is still chucking out plenty of fresh water - the problem is overpopulation and overconsumption of what the planetary system does provide naturally, so that many perfectly-within-bounds natural variation now cause disaster.

But do you see how the difference in possible solutions depends on how you analyse the problem?

ragged · 21/11/2011 11:51

How is it possible that the public have absolutely NO trust in climate scientists?

Because the scientists worried about climate change don't lower themselves to the same level of mud-slinging, making fuzzy accusations about huge personal financial gain, fabricating email conversations, & hiring Russian hackers to break into the Skeptics' research computers. Or making lots of ridiculous, tedious and not sincerely wanted FOI requests, just to prevent researchers from getting on with their actual contractual duties.

OldMacEIEIO · 21/11/2011 12:06

ragged, these scientists are paid from the public purse. They are not doing this for free.
If we pay them , we have a right to see how they came to their conclusions, they must show their workings out.
just like we had to, in school.

In other disciplines, scientists are keen to show where their results come from, they are keen to show supporting material. Why is climate science so different ? what have they got to hide ?

London could be under water in 50 years if global warming is unchecked.

Whatmeworry · 21/11/2011 13:12

London could be under water in 50 years if global warming is unchecked.

Or, if I tweak the model just a little....hey presto! London's a desert. That is the problem with these models over 50 years.

I think any scientists who set out to prove that Humanity is Doomed unless they follow a "trust us" draconian agenda is very naive to think their work won't be picked over in minute detail. Especially if they short circuit peer review and dont let people see their data and working assumptions.

IMO of course...

OldMacEIEIO · 21/11/2011 13:26

According to the IPCC, East Africa was to have suffered floods last year and this

Instead they had severe drought.

Anyone who makes plans based on the outputs from the models is taking a mighty lep of faith

Back to the toms - do not let them cross-pollinate with potatos or aubergines - they are all surprisingly part of the nightshade family and so can be poisonous. Do not use the compost for potatoes

ragged · 21/11/2011 13:34

arctic ice is growing 40% faster than normal THIS year.

I'm sure residents of Alaska & the polar bears will breathe a sigh of relief, then Confused.

If we pay them , we have a right to see how they came to their conclusions, they must show their workings out just like we had to, in school.

Even if "we the public purse" didn't pay them, they wouldn't have the respect they have if they hadn't worked for it; what you seek is already in the peer-reviewed literature, OldMac. It's also in their PhD dissertations, conferences and seminars they give every year when their peers & students stand up & ask critical questions. Okay, I admit, this thread is too convoluted for me to peruse closely, but can't believe you're implying that anything has been said without a billion references; if you knew anything about climate scientists that command the most respect, they're an understated lot on the whole; they won't claim anything without 65 solid references to back it up.

Pah, parp.

OldMacEIEIO · 21/11/2011 13:39

ragged
but they will say that they will prevent opposing views being published by fair means or foul.
They will say that they will change what peer review means in order to keep out the opposing view.
They will say that its not about climate change any more. Its about redistribution of wealth to the third world.

I am interested in what else they have to say

OhYouBadBadkitten · 21/11/2011 13:45

you are mixing climate with weather oldmac.

apibeeman · 01/09/2015 14:09

Seeing as mumsnet is mostly about having babies and breeding, maybe you should all open your eyes a bit and take a serious look at global warming. First check out Easter Island and what happened there, as I think we are going the same way, there is plenty of info on the internet.
The main thing about global warming besides the temperature rise, is the sea rising. Within most of our lives it will be 10 feet, probably more. There is plenty of info about this on the internet. That means there will be about 100,000,000 people displaced. Where do you think those people will go, or do?
Then there is the sad fact that businesses and governments are trying to make money out of the bad situation, which is just making things worse, take carbon trading for an example.
Then we have the real polluters. massive ships using about 380 tons of crude oil to propel them through the water/day. the fumes and soot are pumped into the sea so you do not see the smoke. These ships are increasing 10%/year.
Then we have military, I believe US military produces 50% of the worlds pollution.
How about rockets, they are far from pollution free.
O.K. now consider this:- the authorities are going be picking on us, our heating and consumption. Our carbon footprint that they are going to be taxing us on.
Why are they not taxing the real polluters?
This November 30 2015, the UN are going to be holding a conference in Paris to tie governments to restriction co2 emissions. It will probably be as big a fiasco as the Kyoto agreement in 2006.
Wake up people, if you want a world for your children and grandchildren to live in you had better unite and do something. Personally I think we are nearly too late.

ghostyslovesheep · 01/09/2015 15:28

Thanks for edumacating U.S. Poor dum women

ZOMBIES are one possible side effect you haven't mentioned ...and their threads Hmm

HippyDippyRidingPretty · 01/09/2015 15:32

Arf! ghosty

TalkinPeace · 01/09/2015 15:47

The world is getting hotter.
The reason can be argued about but the data is in the public domain.

Think of the earth as a pan of water on a hob
some bits of the water are still and calm, other bits bubble and simmer.
Convection patterns form and re form in different places at different times
but sooner or later the whole thing comes to the boil

What we are doing to the oceans is like that pan :
El Nino is about to belch a load of heat out of the water into the air
The Gulf stream is being pushed south by melting Arctic Ice : giving us stuff like this shitty Bank Holiday weather
Long term droughts in the Middle East are making life more precarious and encouraging unrest, war and refugees

and more and more areas of the planet, like the southern states of the USA will become uninhabitable for several months a year because of the combination of temperature and humidity.

I do not give a shit what the reason is, we should try to do something about it so our children and grandchildren have somewhere to live and something to eat.

apibeeman · 01/09/2015 16:24

Well you had better be quick because if you take Easter island as an example, you children and grandchildren will be all that there is to eat.
