I wasted many minutes of my life reading a thread the other day before I realised it was 14million years old. I'll never get those minutes back Sad

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 16:37

Blame MNHQ

This is one of the few forums I know where old threads are not locked...so you can read them for info but you don't get to bump them.

I don't get it, who cares if it's old. It's not always very fast paced on here.
Oh and yabu because noone died and made you forum queen

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 19/11/2011 16:41

I agree with worra. Thread locking after X amount of time since last post would certainly be a good idea.

personally, I don't think they need to keep half the threads they do.

They say it's a resource - but for who? People just ask again. Who actually trawls through the thousands of threads in the hope that they will find the exact situation they are in?

Only someone with far too much time on their hands, that's who Grin

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 16:41

I've seen people ask Maryz but obviously nothing's been done

Fidgety They can still be an interesting read...but imo there's no need for people to bump a thread from years ago.

Yes I've noticed that a couple of times.
Don't understand how it's done though.
Do you have to dig around archives or something? And I don't always look at the dates, the same as many people who contribute to them.
Odd.

Pagwatch · 19/11/2011 16:43

I fucking should be forum queen. The vote was close enough.

And bumping old threads just is irritating. If you read it all the first time it's like getting half an hour into a show and realising it's a repeat.

And it implies that things were better a few years ago if people have to trawl old thread. Which it was wasn't

I think it's a pain in the arse when for some reason a really old thread is bumped where the OP was having some sort of crisis and people don't read it and comment/give advice as though it was right now.

oooh help, I'm having contractions, what should I do?
quick, phone the hospital

well, thanks love but the baby is now 6 years old.

Or you get into a bunfight over an issue that was sorted 3 years ago.

Grin people should check dates but they don't.

I don't know how it's done either but FWIW, who cares? If the thread is interesting what does it matter?

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 16:47

I had to laugh the other week

An old thread was bumped from quite a few years ago about a 17yr old having problems at school.

Someone came on and said she hoped school would be better for her tomorrow

I couldn't help thinking she might be married with kids by now Grin

KittyFane · 19/11/2011 16:49

Not everyone has been around long enough to have read every thread ever written on MN since the world began.
Just because you read it years ago doesn't mean everyone has.

Pagwatch · 19/11/2011 16:50
Grin yes, there was one about a school problem the other day but the thread was about two years old. People helpfully making suggestions about what the op should do next time.....
KittyFane · 19/11/2011 16:50

Get the point about "help what should I do?" threads but not general discussions.

Pagwatch · 19/11/2011 16:52

But I would rather read what current members think about an issue now. Not what people who left years ago think.

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 16:52

Kitty no-one's saying people shouldn't read them

But most forums archive their threads and lock them so they can't be bumped

If someone really wanted to comment on it they could always start a new thread and link to it.

JeanBodel · 19/11/2011 16:52

I think it's ok to have them archived so we can all have a good laugh for reference, but you shouldn't be able to post on them.

Would it be better if MN added a "year" line for threads from last year, so it would look like this

etc. I know that wouldn't get them all but it would help and people would see it instantly (BTW I flip threads - just realised that's probably upside down for most of you)

I also get really annoyed about old threads being bumped (Kitty I take your point, but it's rarely that, it's almost always a poster answering as if the thread is current - no idea HOW they get these threads) but would be concerned about locking threads as sometimes it is useful - bumping hilarious older threads, for example.
