I know this has been done before, and I know I am NOT being unreasonable when I ask you to stop bumping old threads

from 2009.

OP posts:
HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 19/11/2011 16:58

I dunno, I think a general discussion needs to have the people involved actually still there and chatting Grin bumping a thread that is 3 years old is the equivalent of going into an empty pub, standing in the middle of the room and saying "Yes, I agree with you that they should introduce hanging for people who fart in lifts..."

Conversation is over. People have gone. It's done. Ain't nobody here but us chickens Grin

Certainly reading old threads can be interesting I suppose. But trying to contribute to a conversation that took place years ago is kind of missing the point of a forum, imo.

StealthPolarBear · 19/11/2011 17:00

oh agree octopus, newbies sometimes can't win. But like I said most of the time people post as though they don't realise the thread is old, addressig posters that no longer post and quite often it is advertising crap. For the few where they genuinely do have a similar problem they are almost always better reading and then starting their own thread - people often see a thread of 326 posts and think "what could I add"

Pagwatch · 19/11/2011 17:03

I see your point octopus. But personally I never huff and puff about new thread about regular subjects. And I don't get sniffy about newbies.

It is precisely, as hec says, because I want to engage with people on the board now, not those circa 2009.

If I want a nostalgia trip I would read classics.

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 19/11/2011 17:05

Oh gawd, I bloody HATE that snotty, sneery "it's been done before" shit.

no two situations are identical and reading what someone did 10 years ago in a situation vaguely similar to yours is not helpful! And sometimes people just want to talk.

I always think less of the sneery "yawn" type posters.

Andrewofgg · 19/11/2011 17:05

No ageism against threads here, please.

Thingumy · 19/11/2011 17:06

Bit desperate to bump your own thread from 2009 I say.

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 19/11/2011 17:08

I agree with Hecate Grin. Unless you're helpfully saying that there have been loads of threads on a subject - suggesting a search for further info and linking - then stfu.

Except for the millionth P&CP/Racist/You'reallbullies thread. Yawn away at them.

Pagwatch · 19/11/2011 17:08

I hate yawn.

I do like [I agree with hec]

Pagwatch · 19/11/2011 17:10

I love "I have been here three minutes and I think you are all pooh smelling bullies" threads
They are all unique and a joy to behold

LadyBeagleEyes · 19/11/2011 17:11

But who is it that bumps them?

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 19/11/2011 17:12

Depending on my mood they are either funny or ragesome.

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 19/11/2011 17:12

I have been here 3 minutes and made one post on one thread where one person politely disagreed with me.

YOU ARE ALL HATEFUL BULLYING BITCHES

I actually saw that one once (I may have paraphrased slightly Wink )

I loved her just a little bit Grin

StealthPolarBear · 19/11/2011 17:13

LBE I have asked many times how these threads get bumped - they must take some searching for but then the bumper posts "OP I think you're right, defintely call up Tesco and complain" - she must know that the OP's complaint is from 2 years ago, so WHY? Never had a decent answer.

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 17:20

I remember the old Ebay Chat forums

Trolls used to have a field day bumping every ancient thread they could find so the first 2 pages were nothing but oldies

That's why the mods had to relent and lock them

TheAlmostFestiveKnid · 19/11/2011 18:27
StealthPolarBear · 19/11/2011 18:29

worra so what was the appeal?

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 18:38

I don't know Stealth just trolls being arse holes I expect

But it used to mess the boards right up

hocuspontas · 19/11/2011 18:44

I've nodded sagely on an old thread then realised it's me under an old name! Grin

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 18:46

hocus I've woken up with a hangover and thought "What a load of shit* and then realised I was reading my own post Grin

hocuspontas · 19/11/2011 18:46

Ha!

RustyBear · 19/11/2011 19:03

It probably doesn't help that advanced search lists results by alphabetical order of topic, not by date - I just tested it by searching for 'reflux' and the first thread that came up was from September 2007!

I do tend to agree with Pag et al about old threads, but I will continue to bump my 'empty nest thread' every year for those whose children are off to university, despite the fact that it celebrated its fifth birthday this year and both my two are now back home, so my nest is full again...

TalcAndTurnips · 19/11/2011 19:23

I'm with you on this, Mardy - I posted on a thread on another forum recently; this lass called Anne was writing about her husband who was disappointed about their first baby not being a boy.

This rather unpleasant chap (or big fat ginge, as Anne described him) had apparently started throwing about all sorts of accusations concerning Anne's supposed infidelities (and worse); it was apparently just a cover-up for his own unfaithfulness and boredom in the relationship.

Next thing I heard was that this was a really old thread, and Anne had since been imprisoned and executed for high treason. I felt a bit bad on hearing this, because I'd advised her to 'keep her hair on' earlier on that day.

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 19/11/2011 20:02

Grin talc. I think I love you.

531800000008 · 19/11/2011 20:51

531800000008 · 19/11/2011 20:52
